Kill the Hippies Rulebook

Source note: Plain English Instructions, BoardGameGeek file.

Cards and Their Purpose

  1. Deck consists of 85 main cards and 15 Hippie cards.
  2. 85 main cards consist of 30 Deed cards, 40 Relic cards, and 15 Event Cards.
  3. Deeds are action cards that can have an effect on both the Hippies and the other players (referred to on the cards as Fundies).
  4. Relics are items/weapons that can be used to Convert or Kill Hippies. The Crosses on the left hand side of the Relic picture are their Convert strength. The Grenades on the right hand side are their Kill strength.
  5. Hippies have a Flower Power strength underneath the illustration (this is essentially their “health”).

Preparation

  1. Separate the Hippies from the main cards.
  2. Shuffle all 85 Main cards and deal 3 to each of the 2-6 players.
  3. Shuffle the 15 Hippie cards and draw five cards, placing them face down to the side. This will be Hippie draw deck. Add an additional 2 Hippie cards for every additional player above two (e.g. a 4 player game will have a Hippie draw deck of 9 cards).

Gameplay

  1. Flip over a Hippie card from the draw deck and place in the center of the table or gaming area. This is the current Hippie. 2.The “holiest” or “most religious” player goes first. Decide this by finding out who has most recently gone to church/temple/mosque, etc.
  2. Any events dealt into the opening hands take place immediately, starting with the player who goes first (see #1) and going clockwise from there.
  3. Again, going clockwise from the first, each player takes a turn. A player can play 1 Deed and/or 1 Relic card per turn. He may also opt to pass.
  4. When playing a Deed, follow the instructions on the card. When playing a Relic, only Convert or Kill strength can be used (not both). Player must declare which one he is using.
  5. Relics are placed on either side of the the current Hippie. Relics meant to Convert will be laid on the left side of the Hippie. Relics meant to Kill will be laid on the right side of the Hippie.
  6. If the number of Convert Crosses or Kill Grenades is greater than or equal to the Hippie’s Flower Power, that Hippie is Converted or Killed respectively. Whichever player deals the final blow to Convert or Kill a Hippie takes the Hippie and places it in front of them, face up for Converted Hippies and face down for Killed Hippies. All Relics that were on a Killed Hippie can be placed in the discard pile. Any Convert Relics that were on a Converted Hippie are placed in the discard pile; Kill relics will stay with a Converted Hippie.
  7. After current Hippie is Converted or Killed, turn the next Hippie card in the draw deck face up and place in the center of the table or gaming area. The round continues with the next player to act.
  8. Players can also target another player’s Converted Hippie to Kill. If a Converted Hippie is killed by another player, the player who initially Converted the Hippie keeps it. It is now placed face down in front of the player.
  9. After all players have had their turn, it returns to the starting player and a new round is started. Players may draw 2 cards at the start of their turn, up to the hand limit of 7 cards. Any cards in excess of 7 must be discarded at the start of the player’s turn.
  10. Play continues until the last Hippie in the draw deck has been Killed or Converted. After this, scores are tallied.

Optional Rule

Anyone who cusses or swears has to immediately discard a card from the hand.

Scoring

  1. Total the number of Converted Flower Power and multiply by 2.
  2. Total the number of Killed Flower Power.
  3. The sum of these two numbers is your score. The player with the highest score wins.
