Leather gameboard, 36 pieces (12 red/12 white or grey/12 black), rules.

Setup

The players place the board between them so that one of them (South) is facing the end of the dragon side which starts with a "double" position (2 pairs of claws) and the other player (North) is on the opposite side.

The South player places his 12 red Barons in 12 of the 36 available positions of his choice, then North places his 12 black Barons in 12 free positions of his choice and then the remaining free positions are filled with the white Barons.

Objective

Be the first to create a 9 height stack containing 3x3 colors. That Baron becomes the Emperor and the player wins the game.

Game Play

Although the players are assigned a color, they do not control a specific color during play. A player can only move one of the 4 Barons that are closest to him (regardless of color).

How the Barons are moved

A Baron can only move to "grow", creating a new stack or enlarging an existing one. A Baron can never be moved in an empty position. The Baron "flies" forward or backwards any distance.

Note: if you move a Baron far away you will not be able to control him as a player can only move the 4 Barons closest to him. If you move him too far the opponent may gain control of the Baron if he is now one of the 4 Barons closest to him!

The Baron on top of a stack is the controller of that stack.

Privileges of a stack controller

The Baron that controls a stack can be moved alone or carry with him one, more or even all the Barons beneath him. Two rules apply:

  1. The Baron must end his movement higher than his starting position (if for example he leaves a stack of height 3 he must end his move on a stack of level 4 or higher).

  2. A moving Baron must also respect the "color harmony": a stack can never contain a color more than 3 times.

If a player can not play without violating one of these two rules, he must pass. A player can not pass if he has a valid move.

Advanced Rules

To increase the number of combinations further:

  • A moving stack can be reversed before it lands at its destination and/or the destination stack can be reversed at the end of movement.

Two-speed rules

  • A Baron can not move more than 4 Barons away.
  • A Baron on a single claw position can only move to the first occupied position, a Baron on a two claw position can move 2 occupied positions and a Baron on a three claw position can move 3 occupied positions.
