1 icescape (game board consisting of two parts placed in the bottom part of the game box), 4 polar bears, 1 magnetic fishing rod, 15 big and 75 small fish (big and small steel balls), 4 wooden tubs, 1 white action die, 1 turquoise temperature die, 8 ice crystals, 5 "No trespassing!" tiles, 5 sheets of A4 size white paper (ice layer), set of game instructions.
Preparation
The game is played in the box. Take all the accessories out of the box - except for the cardboard insert with the holes. Return all the fish (steel balls) to the box. Now insert the lower part of the game board (with holes) into the box. Make sure the illustration of the game board matches with the lateral sides of the game box. Place a sheet of paper on top of the board. It represents the ice layer that you have to break through in order to catch the fish. Finally place the upper part of the game board on top. Now tilt the box a little from side to side so that the fish distribute themselves in the holes at the bottom of the box. Some holes may stay empty, whereas others can hold several balls.
Each player receives a polar bear and the wooden tub of the corresponding color, and places both in front of him. Any remaining polar bears and wooden sticks are not needed. Get the fishing rod and the white action die ready for play. The turquoise temperature die, the ice crystals and the "No trespassing!" tiles will only be used for the more difficult variation.
Hint: You can also shake the box when it is open and then insert the game board. Doing it this way you can try to memorize the approximate position of the fish and therefore where it's worth fishing.
How to Play
Play in a clockwise direction. The player who most recently has gone fishing is the first player and places his polar bear on any ice hole. One by one the other players also place their polar bears on a hole. Now the first player takes the action die and rolls it.
On the die appears:
The face of a polar bear
Move your polar bear as many holes as dots are shown next to polar bear's face on the die. Each hole counts for one dot, it doesn't matter if it has been broken open yet or not. The move of your polar bear may also end on an open hole. When moving your bear, you can also change direction.
Watch out: Occupied holes may not be stepped on or jumped over!
The pickax
When the pickax symbol is rolled, use the pickax's pointed end to poke open as many holes as dots. While doing so, hold the icescape firmly with the other hand so that it does not slip.
Watch out: You may only hack open holes directly adjacent to your polar bear; players cannot open occupied holes.
The fish
Great! Go fish the number of open holes, adjacent to your polar bear, that are shown on the die. It doesn't matter who opened the holes! If you catch a fish then place and collect these fish in your tub.
Watch out: You may not fish in occupied holes!
The star
You may choose which of the three actions your polar bear should do (move, hack, fish). You also can use up the dots combining the three actions.
Important: If you cannot use up all the dots when carrying out an action, the remaining ones are forfeited.
Then it's the turn of the next player to roll the die.
End of the Game
The game ends as soon as a player has collected 10 fish in his tub thus winning the game. The size of the fish doesn't matter. If all the holes have been hacked open and no player was able to catch at least 10 fish then the player with the most fish wins. In the case of a draw there are various winners.
Hint: If the fishing craze has caught you, just continue until all the holes are hacked open. The player with the most fish wins the game.
Variation: Tricky Weather! (age 6+)
The rules of the basic game apply except for the following changes:
In addition get the temperature die, the ice crystals and the "No trespassing!" tiles ready for play.
The temperature die is always rolled together with the action die. You are free to choose which die you want to carry out first. When carrying out the action die, use the dots of both dice.
The meaning of the symbols on the temperature die:
The "No trespassing!" sign
It is dangerous to step on this ice floe! Place a "No trespassing!" tile onto an ice floe with no polar bear on it making sure you don't cover any hole with it. This floe may now not be stepped on by any polar bear. Or instead of placing a "No trespassing" tile you can choose to remove a "No trespassing!" tile from an ice floe.
Watch out: You can still hack from a neighboring floe into a banned floe and fish there.
The ice crystal
An open hole freezes again. Place an ice crystal on this hole. Now no hacking or fishing is possible. The polar bears however may move across this hole or stand there. So for moving it counts as a normal hole. Instead of placing an ice crystal you also can remove an ice crystal from a hole.
Dots only
There is no temperature change. The dots are added to those of the action die.
The "No trespassing!" tile and the ice crystal don't interfere with each other. For example, a hole can freeze even if the corresponding ice floe is marked by a "No trespassing!" tile.
End of the Game
The game ends as soon as at least one hole is hacked open in each ice floe or the first player has caught 15 fish.
Analysis
The scoring of your catch is scored as follows: Big fish count two points, small fish one. Whoever has the most points wins the game. In case of a draw there are various winners.
