Components

  • 6 bases
  • 85 Fame Point tokens (34 of value 1, 25 of value 3, 26 of value 5)
  • 1 Measuring Tape
  • 14 City Cards
  • 1 Police Card
  • 60 Junk Art Cards
  • 6 Scoring Cards
  • 60 Pieces (15 pieces in each of 4 colours)

Preparing the First City

  1. Take 1 Base and place it horizontally in front of you.
  2. Spread the pieces in the center of the table, and place the Fame Points and Measuring Tape next to them.
  3. Shuffle the Junk Art Cards and the Scoring Cards separately, and place both decks face down within reach of all players.
  4. Shuffle the City Cards and reveal one at random. Complete the setup according to the specific rules of the city. If the City Card does not match the number of players in the game, discard it and reveal another.
  5. Finally, randomly choose the starting player. You're now ready to play!

Summary and Objective of the Game

Junk Art is a mix of steady hands, balance, and a bit of luck. Embark on a world tour and exhibit your works in different cities around the world, creating a unique structure in each city using the game pieces. Regardless of the location, your goal remains the same: increase your fame and become the artist of the hour.

Playing the Game

The rules for each city explain how to play the Junk Art Cards to place pieces on the Base. Regardless of the city in play, you must always follow these placement rules:

  1. The card indicates which piece you must place; this is the active piece. If you must place more than one piece on your turn, do so one at a time. Discard the card after placing the corresponding piece.
  2. You may use one or both hands to place the active piece.
  3. You can place the active piece anywhere on the structure, as long as it does not touch the table. The structure consists of all pieces placed on the base, including the base itself.
  4. You may hold the base with one hand.
  5. You cannot touch the pieces of the structure with your hands.
  6. The active piece can be used to move one or more pieces on your structure.

Fallen Pieces and Etiquette

Collect any pieces that fall from your structure in front of you. If, during your turn, one or more pieces fall from your structure while the active piece is still in your hand, return the active piece to the center of the table. If the active piece is the only one to fall, you may pick it up and place it again.

Under no circumstances can you intentionally cause pieces to fall, neither from your structure nor from that of others. Strive to keep your structure standing for as long as possible. Avoid sudden movements like hitting the table or any other actions that might jeopardize the stability of the structures. It is recommended that the group establish its own rules before starting the game to avoid accidental knockdowns and other situations that go against the spirit of the game.

The Golden Rule

If the specific rules of a city conflict with the general rules, the city's rules take precedence.

End of the Exhibition

Follow the rules of the city to determine when the exhibition ends. Many of them reward the construction of the tallest structure. If there is any doubt about which structure is the tallest, use the measuring tape.

The Next City

  1. Return the pieces to the center of the table and shuffle all Junk Art Cards to reform the deck.
  2. Remove from the game any Scoring Cards used in the city you just played.
  3. Reveal a new City Card and complete the setup as indicated by it (if the card does not match the number of players, discard it and reveal another).
  4. The player with the fewest Fame Points plays first. In case of a tie, randomly select the starting player among the tied players.

End of the World Tour and Victorious Artist

The tour, and the game, ends after playing in 3 cities. The player with the most accumulated Fame Points is the victorious artist. In case of a tie, the player who earned the most Fame Points in the last city wins. If the tie persists, the tied players share the victory.

For a slightly longer game, you can play a tour of 4 cities.

Scoring Cards

Each Scoring Card shows a card number and a scoring condition (for example: "Earn 1 Fame Point if the active piece touches at least 1 piece of the same colour").

Most cities use Scoring Cards. Earn Fame Points (star) in the moment that you meet the condition indicated on the cards in play when placing the active piece. Below are the scoring conditions for each card, numbered 1 to 6:

  1. Earn 1 Fame Point if the active piece touches at least 1 piece of the same colour.
  2. Earn 1 Fame Point if the active piece touches at least 1 piece of the same shape.
  3. Earn 1 Fame Point if the active piece is only touching 1 piece.
  4. Earn 1 Fame Point if the active piece touches at least 3 pieces.
  5. Earn 1 Fame Point if the active piece is placed lower on the structure than any other piece already placed.
  6. Earn 1 Fame Point if the active piece fits into or passes through another piece. The pieces that will allow this condition to be met are those which have a hole or a groove.

The Cities

The following pages describe the specific rules for each city.

Anatomy of a City Card

Each City Card shows:

  1. City name.
  2. Number of Players Permitted.
  3. Turn Direction: to the left, to the right, or simultaneous.
  4. Fame Points at the End of the Exhibition.
  5. Reference Page.

The Winning Colour Order

When two or more cards tie for the highest value in a trick, the strongest colour wins the trick, in the following order: orange, teal, green, grey.

City: Amsterdam

Amsterdam is renowned for its picturesque canals, historic houses, and vibrant culture. It's a city of art, bicycles, and a celebration of diversity. Can your masterpiece stand out among so many others?

Players: 2-6

Setup

  1. Deal 3 Junk Art Cards to each player.
  2. Reveal 1 Scoring Card.

Game Turn

It's time to play your pieces in a trick-taking manner.

  1. Each player chooses 1 card from their hand and places it face down in front of them.
  2. Then, all players reveal their cards simultaneously.
  3. The card with the highest value wins the trick. If 2 or more cards have the same value, the strongest colour wins (see The Winning Colour Order).
  4. The winner chooses one of the played cards; the player with the second strongest card chooses another, and so on until all cards have been picked.
  5. Each player takes the piece corresponding to their card and places it on their structure.
  6. All players draw one card.

Fallen Pieces

A player is eliminated as soon as they accumulate 3 or more fallen pieces.

End of Exhibition and Fame Points

The exhibition ends when a player is eliminated or when all cards have been played. Determine the 3 tallest structures and award Fame Points as follows:

  • The tallest structure earns 3 Fame Points, the second tallest 2 and the third tallest 1 (with 2 players, the second structure earns 1 instead of 2).

City: Cordoba

Cordoba, boasting four UNESCO World Heritage Sites, is a captivating blend of culture and history. The city truly comes alive during the Patios Festival, where vibrant flower-filled pots transform every corner into a stunning masterpiece. 2. Reveal as many Junk Art Cards as there are players plus one.

Game Turn

  1. Choose 1 of the visible cards, take the corresponding piece, and place it on your structure.
  2. Then, move your pot from the piece it's on to a different piece in your structure (the base also counts). Earn 1 Fame Point if you place it on the active piece. Follow the usual placement rules when placing your Pot.
  3. If no visible cards remain at the end of your turn, reveal as many cards as there are players plus one.
  4. The turn passes to the player on your left.

Note: You cannot place the active piece on top of the Pot; it must always remain free.

Fallen Pieces

A player is eliminated as soon as they accumulate 3 or more fallen pieces or if their Pot falls.

Fallen Pieces

Fallen pieces have no effect in this city. Continue revealing cards from your deck even if pieces have fallen from your structure.
