Game Overview
Each player is a daring explorer, progressing through the secret lands of the jungle in search of the fabled village of gold. However, the jungle is full of obstacles to overcome, and merely blindly moving forward will be a fatal endeavour. With your trusty dice, you will need to acquire food, wood, and a variety of tools and resources to use in your journey. You will also need letters to grant you abilities along the way that will allow you to change your dice, exchange artifacts, and gain various benefits.
Game Setup
- Sort the Discovery cards into 3 different Area types (bottom left icon) and shuffle each pile well. According to the number of players, return the following numbers of cards from each area to the box:
| Players | Area A | Area B | Area C |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 people | 4 | 4 | 4 |
| 3 people | 2 | 2 | 2 |
| 4 people | 1 | 1 | 1 |
| 5 people | All cards are used |
Now, using the Start card, Goal card, and the Discovery cards, form a line on the table with the sequence (Start ⇒ Area A ⇒ Area B ⇒ Area C ⇒ Goal) by placing the cards side-by-side.
Cards do not necessarily need to be placed in 1 straight line and may be arranged in a snake fashion according to your preferences and table space.
-
Set the game end Treasure card temporarily aside. Shuffle the other Treasure cards well face-down and according to the number of players, separate the Treasure cards into an Upper and Lower deck. Place the game end Treasure card face down between these two decks.
The size of the Upper deck is determined by the following table:
| Players | Number of Treasure cards |
|---|---|
| 2 | 6 |
| 3 | 9 |
| 4 | 12 |
| 5 | 15 |
-
Place the following items in reach of all players:
- Dice
- Food tokens
- Wood tokens
- Tool tokens
- Letter tokens
- Wagon cards
This is known as the stock.
-
The player who has most recently visited a jungle begins. Otherwise, determine the start player in a fashion you prefer. The Start Player card does not change possession for the whole game.
-
Each player chooses their playing colour out of red, blue, yellow, green, and purple and receives the following components into their hand (except their player token):
- 1 Player token (place this on the Start card)
- 1 Player card
- 1 Food token
- 1 Wood token
- 1 Tool token
- 2 Letter tokens
You are now ready to play the game!
Flow of the Game
The game is played in turns starting from the start player and proceeding in a clockwise direction until the end condition of the game is met. When the end condition of the game is met, the round is played till all players have had an equal number of turns (ending with the player to the right of the start player) and the winner is determined. Please refer to "Game End Condition" for more details.
Flow of a Turn
During a player's turn, they carry out the following three phases in order:
- Dice phase
- Materials and Letters phase
- Movement/Discovery phase
Each phase is described in detail later in the rules. In addition, during the turn, there may be a variety of effects that can be implemented by paying Letter tokens. These and their timing restrictions are described under "Letter Effects".
1. Dice Phase
In the Dice phase, players roll and decide on which dice to keep.
First, the player takes the four dice from the stock and rolls them. Due to Letter effects and Discovery cards, players may roll more than 4 dice; but in any case, only a maximum of 10 dice may be rolled.
After the first roll, set aside dice that show the Letter face. Choose the dice that you want to reroll and set aside all other dice. During the second reroll, any dice that you have previously set aside can be rerolled as long as they do not show the Letter face. A maximum of TWO dice may be rerolled each time and there is a maximum of 2 rerolls. However, if there are 2 or more Letter faces showing, go immediately to 2. Materials and Letters phase.
Example: Livingston rolls 4 dice, with the outcome of Move 1, Move 1, Food and Letter. The Letter has to be set aside, and Food is also set aside, and the two Move 1s are rerolled to become Tool and Tool. The 2 Tools are set aside and the Food that was previously set aside is now rerolled to a Tool. As there have already been 2 rerolls, no dice can be further rerolled and the final outcome for Livingston is 3 Tools and 1 Letter.
2. Materials and Letters Phase
In this phase, the player gains Materials and Letters according to their dice roll.
First, the player has to choose one of the 2 following options described below:
- Gain Materials/Letters
- Rest
1) Gain Materials/Letters
When 1) Gain Materials/Letters is selected, players first acquire materials, then acquire letters.
Acquire Materials
The player chooses one of the following two ways to gain material:
- a) Acquire 1 type of material
- b) Acquire 1 of each type of material
a) If you choose to acquire 1 type of material, choose 1 material type and gain a number of material tokens equal to the number showing on the dice outcome.
Example: Livingston's dice outcome is 2 Letters and 2 Tools. Livingston chooses a) to acquire 1 type of material and chooses Tools. Therefore Livingston acquires 2 Tool tokens.
b) If you choose to acquire 1 of each type of material, gain 1 material token for each different material showing on the dice outcome.
Example: Stanley's dice shows Move 2, 2 Foods and a Tool. Stanley chooses b) to acquire 1 of each type and gains 1 Food token and 1 Tool token.
! Important ! At the start of the game, each player can only possess up to 6 material tokens. To be able to possess more, they need to own Wagon cards (obtained in the Movement/Discovery phase) that raise this limit for each Wagon card. When you gain material tokens over the limit, you have to immediately choose and discard down to the limit.
Acquire Letters
If 1 or more Letter faces are showing from the dice outcome, the player gains 1 Letter token.
Example: Livingston's dice roll is 2 Letters and 2 Tools. He gains 1 Letter token.
! Important ! At the start of the game, each player can only possess up to 6 Letter tokens. To be able to possess more, they need to own Wagon cards (obtained in the Movement/Discovery phase) that raise this limit for each Wagon card. You may only gain Letter tokens up to your limit.
2) Rest
When 2) Rest is selected, the player gains 2 Letter tokens plus the number of Letter faces showing on their dice and skips the Movement/Discovery phase.
Example: Livingston rolls 2 Letters, 1 Tool and 1 Move 2. Livingston chooses 2) Rest. He gains 2 (Base) + 2 (Dice) = 4 Letter tokens. Livingston may not carry out the Movement/Discovery phase.
3. Movement/Discovery Phase
In the Movement/Discovery phase, players acquire Discovery cards by moving and activating Discovery cards. Players can Move and Discover at most once in this phase, in whichever order the player prefers. It is also possible to do either or neither.
Move
The player tallies all of the movement points from their Move 1 and Move 2 dice and moves their Player token exactly this number of steps towards the Goal card. Therefore, even if a player rolls 4 movement points, they may not choose to move only 2. It does not matter if a player passes over or lands on another player's Player token. If you land on the Goal card, you may not move any further (refer to "Reaching the Goal" for more details).
Example: A total of 4 movement points is rolled: [the rulebook shows a diagram of four Discovery cards in sequence from the Player token; the diagram is not reproduced here].
Discovery
The player pays the materials required on the top left of the card that their Player token is on and takes the card into their hand. First, the player pays the cost on the top left of the card. Then, all Player tokens on the card are moved to the next card (towards the Goal). After this, the card is placed in front of the active player face-up in view of all players. The effects of the Discovery card now take place (refer to "Discovery card Effects" for more details). In the rare case that you reach the Goal card after a Discovery, please refer to the section on "Reaching the Goal". Only 1 Discovery may take place per turn, so a player may not carry out a Discovery after moving on to the next card.
! Important ! It is not possible to carry out a Discovery in the middle of a Move. For example, if there is a total movement of five steps, you may not move three steps, carry out the Discovery, and move another two steps.
! Important ! When considering sets of die faces, Move 1 and Move 2 will be considered as different die faces.
Reaching the Goal
Note: This game is not a race, and the player who reaches first does not necessarily win.
When the Goal is Reached
When the Goal is reached by a player, they immediately draw 1 Treasure card from the deck. Place the card face down hidden from the other players. In rare cases, it is possible for multiple players to reach the Goal at the same time. In this case, starting from the active player, each player draws a Treasure card one by one clockwise. The active player then finishes their turn normally.
Game changes after the Goal is Reached
After reaching the Goal, in addition to your usual action, on each player's turn, do the following: First, draw a Treasure card from the deck at the beginning of turn. In addition, an additional 1-2) Treasure Excavation phase is added between phase 1 and 2.
1-2. Treasure Excavation Phase
Look at the outcome of the fixed dice and draw 1 Treasure card for each set of 3 of the same die faces. After this, carry out the turn as normal.
! Important ! When considering sets of die faces, Move 1 and Move 2 will be considered as different die faces.
Example: Livingston reached the Goal on his previous turn. On this turn, six dice were rolled and the result 3 Move 1s and 3 Tools was obtained. He thus draws 2 Treasure cards.
If you draw the Game End Treasure card (red), show it to all players and the end of the game begins (refer to "End of Game").
End of Game
If a player draws the Game End Treasure card, they show it to all players and the game enters its last round. The game ends at the end of the turn of the player to the right of the Start player.
End of Game Scoring
Players tally their points obtained from the following sources:
- Discovery card points
- Treasure card points
- Wagon card points
- Professor discovery card points
- Discovery card type bonus points
Discovery card type bonus points
Players tally the number of types of Discovery cards (indicated by the top right icon) and obtain the following bonus points:
- 3 types ...... 1 victory point
- 4 types ...... 4 victory points
- 5 types ...... 7 victory points
The player with the most victory points wins. In the case of a tie, the player with the most Treasure cards breaks the tie. In a further tie, the player with the least points from Treasure cards breaks the tie. In a further tie, all tied players share the victory.
Letter Effects
You can carry out a variety of game effects by spending Letter tokens. As the timing of each Letter effect is different, please refer to each Letter effect for more details.
-
Add a Die (1 Letter token) Appropriate phase: Dice phase. You may increase your dice to roll this turn by spending 1 Letter token per die (maximum 10 dice total). This is done before the dice are rolled. This does not affect the number of dice you reroll.
-
Cancel and reroll a dice roll (1 Letter token) Appropriate phase: Dice phase. After a dice roll, you may cancel the results of the roll by paying 1 Letter token to reroll the dice again. However, ALL dice must be rerolled, including Letter faces.
-
Change 1 die face (2 Letter tokens) Appropriate phase: Dice phase. You may change the face of 1 die to any side after all the dice have been set aside. This effect may be done as many times as can be paid for.
-
Buy a Wagon (2 Letter tokens) Appropriate phase: Movement/Discovery phase. Instead of buying a Discovery card, a player may obtain 1 Wagon card. This is the only way to procure a Wagon. Players may only own a maximum of 2 Wagons. This is considered a Discovery action.
-
Discover a remote location (3 Letter tokens) Appropriate phase: Movement/Discovery phase. You may discover a Discovery card anywhere on the board that does not have another Player token on it. You still have to pay the cost of the Discovery. This is considered a Discovery action.
-
Acquiring a Treasure card (4 Letter tokens) Appropriate phase: Movement/Discovery phase (only after the Goal has been reached). In addition to the normal Treasure card action, you can draw one extra Treasure card. You may draw as many as you can afford.
-
Exchange a Discovery card (5 Letter tokens) Appropriate phase: Movement/Discovery phase. You may exchange one of your owned Discovery cards with any other Discovery card on the board without a Player token on it. You do not need to pay the cost of the Discovery card. This is considered a Discovery action.
