Goal of the Game
Start at the campfire and move your player pieces along the jungle path. In total you cross the river three times: first over the suspension bridge, then over the log bridge and finally over the waterfall. The player who is first to reach the goal space with the Jungle Toad King wins the game!
Before the First Game
Carefully punch all animal cards and Friend chips out of the punchboards and dispose of the two centre bridges of the jungle game board that are marked with white trash cans. Apply the stickers to the die. Check that the lower river game board lies flat in the blue box insert. If not, carefully press it down again.
Setup
Take all the game material except the river game board out of the box. Place the jungle game board in the box so that the Jungle Toad King sits on the embossed crown of the box insert. Place the box in the middle of the table. Each player receives one player piece and one player marker of the same colour. In addition, each player chooses one of the five Friend chips. Place your player piece on one of the four start spaces at the campfire. Lay your player marker and Friend chip in front of you.
Shuffle the 30 animal cards and place them, back side face up, in two stacks next to the box.
Draw eight cards face down from a stack. Place two in front of each of the four river courses at the suspension bridge. Then turn the eight cards over so that all players can see them. Slide them in one after another, animal side up, into the respective river course - in such a way that four cards lie completely hidden under the suspension bridge and four cards are already visible at the front water holes.
Beginner version: Play without the Friend chips; leave them in the box.
The Game Begins
Play proceeds clockwise. The youngest player begins. The player whose turn it is carries out the following 3 actions in order:
- Roll the die
- Slide in an animal card
- Count animals and advance your own player piece
1. Roll the Die
The player rolls the die once. Then the following happens:
-
If the die shows a monkey, anteater, elephant, toucan or tiger, the player must find this rolled animal at the eight water holes. Continue with actions 2 and 3.
-
If the die shows the snake, the player piece that is furthest ahead is set back by one space. If several player pieces are together on the foremost space, they are set back together by one space. Afterwards the player may roll once more. If he rolls the snake again, the foremost piece is again set back by one space. Afterwards, however, it is immediately the next player's turn.
Important! The snake comes into play only from the seventh space on. Player pieces are never set back further than this space. If no player piece has yet moved past the seventh space, the snake has no effect and the player simply rolls again.
2. Slide in an Animal Card
The player takes the top card of one of the two stacks.
- He turns it over and slides the animal into one of the four river courses under the suspension bridge, so that the card is completely hidden by the suspension bridge. By sliding in the animal card, a different animal card appears at the front and, as the game goes on, also at the rear water hole of this river course.
3. Count Animals and Advance Your Own Player Piece
The player now counts how often the animal he is looking for appears at the eight water holes.
- He may advance his player piece that many spaces.
If the rolled animal is not visible at any of the eight water holes, he unfortunately may not advance his player piece.
Note: The animal being looked for does not have to be in the river course the player chose. All eight water holes are always counted!
Example: The red player has rolled the tiger. He turns over a monkey card and slides it into one of the four river courses so that the monkey "disappears" completely under the suspension bridge. Now a total of two tigers are visible at the eight water holes. The player advances his player piece two spaces.
- If at the waterfall an animal card is pushed out again, it is covered again and placed under one of the two stacks.
After that it is the next player's turn.
Friend Chips
Each player has a Friend chip that shows his best friend. This can bring him forward faster.
If a player who is currently on action 3 has his player piece standing directly next to his best friend, his player piece may advance one space extra.
Important: The best friend counts only at the beginning and at the end of the advancing of your own player piece. Your own player piece must be standing on the suspension bridge, the log bridge or the waterfall. On the six stone spaces in the jungle the best friend does not count.
If the player piece stands on the log bridge directly next to two animal cards that show his best friend, the player may advance two spaces extra right away.
Example 1: Anna's best friend is the tiger. She rolls a monkey, turns over an elephant card and slides the elephant under the suspension bridge. Now a total of two monkeys are visible at the eight water holes. Anna's player piece stands at the beginning of the waterfall, directly next to a tiger. Therefore she immediately advances her player piece one space extra. Then she advances her player piece two spaces for the visible monkeys. Now Anna's player piece stands on the last waterfall space, again next to a tiger. So she advances one more space extra. She is the first to reach the Jungle Toad King and wins the game!
Example 2: Ben's best friend is the monkey. He rolls a toucan, turns over a tiger card from the stack and slides the tiger under the suspension bridge. Now a total of three toucans are visible at the eight water holes. Ben's player piece stands at the beginning of the log bridge, directly next to two monkeys. Therefore he immediately advances his player piece two spaces extra. At the first space that his player piece passes, another monkey is visible at a water hole. Since Ben's player piece passes by and does not stop here, this monkey does not count. Then Ben advances three spaces for the three visible toucans.
End of the Game
The game ends as soon as a player reaches, with his player piece, the last space with the Jungle Toad King. This player wins the totally shifted adventure with the Jungle Gang!
