Contents

  • 1 playing device (8 arms, 1 head)
  • 20 crabs in four colors
  • 1 pair of tongs (color may differ from illustration)

Object of the Game

Players try to collect one blue, one yellow, one orange and one red crab.

Prior to the First Game

Open the bottom of the playing device and put 3 batteries (type AA/LR6, 1.5 volt) into the battery compartment. This should be done by an adult. In order to open the battery compartment, you need a Phillips screwdriver. Please also read the notes on page 4.

Preparations

Fit the arms on Jolly. He has two different arms that you can recognize by their shape and by the two different symbols at their ends. Fit the corresponding arm onto the body, always at the position point with the matching symbol. Let an adult help you assemble the playing device.

Attention Parents: Please do not allow children to move Jolly's arms manually. This can cause damage to the mechanical parts inside.

Fit the head on Jolly's body.

Distribute all crabs evenly in the designated hollows in the rock. Place the crabs of one color on different levels, since it is harder to reach crabs on the top level than on lower levels.

Make sure that the crabs arms point outwards so that they are facing you.

At the bottom edge of the rock there is a switch. Put it on "1" in order to start the game at the beginners' level. If you choose "2", you play the experts' level.

Place the playing device in the middle of the table so that everyone can reach it.

Here we go!

The youngest player starts. Then play in a clockwise direction.

1. Snatch a Crab

If it is your turn, you press Jolly's head. You hear the sound of a harp: Jolly begins to spin around and move his arms. Pick up the tongs.

Note for adults: After having started Jolly, the touch-sensitivity of the playing device is adjusted while the sound of a harp can be heard. During this time interval Jolly is not to be touched. Nevertheless, if any player does touch one of Jolly's arms and he begins to laugh, you will have to start the playing device again. Press Jolly's head to stop and restart the playing device.

As soon as the harp fades, you try to carefully snatch one of the crabs with the tongs. It is easier to grab the crab from the bottom. Pay attention to Jolly's arms and try not to touch them!

2. Observe Jolly's Reactions

  • Do not tickle Jolly: If you manage to take a crab down from the rock without touching Jolly's arms and tickling him, you may keep the crab. You place it in front of you on the table. Then it's the next player's turn.

While collecting crabs, pay attention to the colors that you still need. If you accidentally grab a crab of a color that you do not need, you give it away to any player who needs this crab.

If one or several additional crabs fall off the rock while you grab your crab, you may keep your crab but you must pass the additional crab to a player that needs it. If a player does not need the additional crab, you must place it back on the rock.

Sometimes Jolly simply falls asleep and stops spinning. If this happens on your turn, you're in luck! Take your time to collect a crab. Then your turn is over. Now the next player wakes Jolly up by pressing his head.

  • You touch Jolly's arm and he begins to laugh: If you touch one of Jolly's arms while collecting crabs, the ticklish octopus will react. He begins to laugh and stops spinning around. In this case, you give back the crab that you have grabbed during this turn or that has fallen out of a hollow. Put it back in its place. Unfortunately, now your turn is over.

It is the next player's turn. They take the tongs and press Jolly's head so he begins to spin around again.

End of the game

As soon as a player has collected all of their crabs, the game is over. This player has won.

Note: Do not forget to switch the playing device off after the game.
