Twisty Tracks
A Puzzly Game for 1-4 Players, Ages 6 and up. By Jeffrey D. Allers
Introduction
Some people just want to get from point A to point B. For others, the "journey is the destination." In this game, players are rewarded for both!
As you build your twisty tracks around towns, through tunnels and over bridges, you can race to be the first trains to reach the most valuable stations. Or you can keep your trains moving by creating longer routes that reward you for showing your passengers the beautiful scenery. Wait too long, however, and you may not be able to reach a station anymore! The player who has the highest total of points from both their journeys and destinations is the winner!
In Twisty Tracks players collect "travel points" as they build track and use their trains to take their passengers through scenic landscapes. Try to reach the best stations first and score the most points, but once the trains do so, they can no longer travel.
Twisty Tracks can also be played with variants for young children.
Summary
Place a new track tile every turn, then move all of your trains that connect to the new track. The tracks twist and turn through tunnels and over bridges, and you can rotate each tile any way you wish before placing it. Every time a train crosses a border where 2 tiles meet, or where a tile meets the frame, you score a travel point. When a train makes it to a station, you receive points for that station. The first train (or trains) to arrive at each station receive the most points for that station, the next trains receive less, and if there are no more spaces left at a station, you receive no station bonus.
Components
- 4 Player Frames in 4 player colors
- 60 Track Tiles, 15 in each of the 4 player colors
- 16 Station Tokens, 4 in each of the 4 player colors
- 4 Scoring Tokens, 1 in each of the 4 player colors
- 16 Trains in 4 colors (red, blue, green, yellow)
- 1 Scoring Board
Preparation
Place the Scoring Board in the middle.
Each player takes a Player Frame and places 4 Trains (1 of each color) on the 4 starting tracks that match each train's color.
Each player takes the 15 Track Tiles in her color, mixes them, and places them in a face-down stack next to her Frame.
Each player takes a Scoring Marker in her color and places it next to the "1" space on the scoring track that runs along the outside of the Scoring Board.
Each player takes the 4 Station Tokens in her color and places them next to her Frame.
With less than 4 players, place the unclaimed Station Tokens on the marked spaces of the Scoring Board. Place the unused Frames and Scoring Markers back in the box.
Playing the Game
The game is played in rounds, and players take their turns each round simultaneously:
-
Draw a Track Tile from the top of your stack.
-
Place the tile: it must be placed so that at least one of your trains can move onto or through the new tile! You may rotate the tile any way you wish before placing it. All players place their tiles simultaneously without looking at where their opponents are placing. Once you have placed your tile, it remains there for the rest of the game!
-
Move all of your Trains that can move. Trains may, at times, move from two different adjoining tiles. They may also move onto the new tile and then through to another tile you previously placed.
Travel Points: for every border your train crosses - between 2 tiles or between a tile and the frame - you score 1 point. You can use the curves on the frames or tiles with U-turns to re-enter tiles you already travelled through and score even more travelling points! Record your points with your scoring marker on the scoring track.
Trains only stop when they reach the end of an unfinished track, when they collide, or when they reach a station.
A. Unfinished Track: your train remains at the edge of unfinished track until a new tile is added that continues that track.
B. Collisions: if two of your trains collide on the same track, both are removed from your board. Neither will score any points for reaching stations! They do, however, score Travel Points for any borders they crossed before they collided.
C. Station: for each of your Trains that reach a Station on your Frame, you receive the highest number of points still shown for that Station on the Scoring Board. If more than one player reaches the same station at the same time, all of those players receive the highest number shown on the Station Board. Record your points by moving your Scoring Marker along the track around the Scoring Board.
Then place one of your Station Tokens over the highest number showing for that Station on the Scoring Board. If more than one player reaches the Station at the same time, one player covers the highest number remaining (the number those players scored) and the other player covers the next highest number, etc.
If a player covers the last remaining number at that station, any other players who score this turn simply stack their scoring marker on top of it.
If, however, you arrive at a Station with all of its numbers already covered during previous turns, you instead place your marker in the penalty space below the Station points. You receive no points for this scoring marker.
Note: it is possible - and a very good strategy - for a player to reach a high-scoring Station with 2 of her Trains at the same time! As usual, both Trains score the same number of points, although 2 numbers on that Station's track are then covered.
End of Game
When you have no more trains that can move (they have either collided or reached stations), you pass instead of taking a turn. The game ends when all players have no more trains to move.
The player with the most points wins!
Game Variants
There are several variants that make the game more accessible and can also be played as a solitaire puzzle.
Variant 1: Stations Only
In this variant, you only count the Station scoring. There are no Travel Points awarded. This is a good variant for younger children.
Variant 2: Travelling Only
The goal in this variant is to move your Trains over as many tiles as possible. You want to avoid reaching the Stations as long as possible, but also be careful not to collide with your trains! You only keep track of your travelling points. No stations points are awarded. This variant is also good with young children.
Solitaire Variants
You can play the main game or either variant as a solitaire game, trying to make the highest score possible. Or you can make up your own challenge!
5-8 Players
With two copies of the game and a special score board, it is possible to play with up to 8 players. For the second copy of the game, use the opposite side (without illustrations) of the station and scoring markers. All other rules are the same with the following exception:
When you reach a station, first place your scoring marker above that station on the Scoring Board. When all players are finished with their turns, you may then place the Station Markers on the scoring spaces under the Stations.
This added step helps you keep track of who is reaching the station at the same time.
