Setup and Rules
- Place the 28 Water Cards face-up in the hunting ground in five rows of six cards. Then place the two Island Cards face-up in the top left and bottom right corners. Whoever was the last to take a dip in the ocean will play as Jaws (shark). The other player(s) will play as Orca (boat). If there are more than two players, Orca can play as a team. Jaws always plays alone.
- Jaws and Orca players must sit facing each other, either side of the hunting ground.
- Both Jaws and Orca take a Grid Board and Marker to place in front of them.
- Orca and Jaws have different set-ups:
Orca Set-up:
- Place the Boat Token on the Island Card closest to you.
- Place three Swimmer Tokens each on a different Water Card of your choice.
- Place three Swimmer Buttons on their corresponding location on your Grid Board.
- Take the Swimmer Tracking Card and place it in front of you. Place a Swimmer Button on the number 3.
Jaws Set-up:
- Place the Jaws Shield in front of your Grid Board so your opponent(s) can't see it.
- Place the Shark Token in front of you.
- Place three Swimmer Buttons on their corresponding location on your Grid Board.
- Take the Health Tracking Card and place it in front of you. Place a Shark Button on the number 3.
General Gameplay
Orca wins by hitting Jaws three times. Jaws wins by killing the three swimmers. It's as simple as that.
Jaws hunts under water (obviously). The Jaws player only moves Jaws on its shielded Grid Board. This means Jaws' exact position is always a mystery to the Orca player(s).
However, following its turn, Jaws must give a clue as to its position. It does this by placing the Shark Token next to the row OR column within the area in which it's hunting.
The Orca player(s) can use the Grid Board and Marker/Eraser to keep track of Jaws' position.
But beware… on each turn, a Water Card must be removed from the ever-shrinking hunting ground thereby driving Orca, Jaws and the swimmer closer to each other.
Jaws always starts the game. The Jaws player also begins the first round positioned on the Island Card closest to them.
A turn includes three steps (in the following order):
- Move
- Action
- Remove Water Card
Jaws' Turn
1. Move:
- Jaws can only move vertically or horizontally (NEVER diagonally).
- What 'move' options are open to Jaws?
- NOT move (Jaws can stay in the same spot for one turn).
- OR move one or two spots anywhere within the hunting ground.
- Mark Jaws' new position on your shielded Grid Board.
- Place the Shark Token next to the row or column you have moved Jaws to within the hunting ground.
2. Action:
- Kill a swimmer:
- If Jaws swims underneath a Water Card with a Swimmer Token on it, it MUST kill the swimmer and shout "KILL!" The player can then discard the Swimmer Token.
- After a swimmer has been killed, Jaws moves back to one of the two Island Cards. Jaws must not reveal its Shark Token until after its next turn.
- Action Tokens:
- Action Tokens CANNOT be used in your very first round.
- You don't have to use an Action Token on your turn.
- After using an Action Token you must discard it.
- You may use more than one Action Token on your turn.
Jaws' Action Tokens:
- OR: Place a Water Card: You may place a discarded Water Card back within the hunting ground. This Water Card needs to touch another Water Card with at least one of its sides and must stay within the original area of play grid.
- OR: Block a Water Card: Place this Action Token on a Water Card you wish to block within the hunting ground. This Action Token remains there until the end of the game. The Water Card underneath this Action Token can never be removed.
- Extra move: You may move Jaws one (extra) spot in the hunting ground.
- Hide Jaws' position: On this turn, you don't have to reveal your Shark Token.
3. Remove Water Card: At the end of your turn, you must always discard one Water Card, positioned outside the hunting ground. You may not remove Water Cards that are in the middle of the hunting ground.
Orca's Turn
1. Move:
- The Boat Token can only move vertically or horizontally (NEVER diagonally). Orca has two 'move' options.
- NOT move (the Boat Token can stay in the same spot for one turn).
- OR move one or two spots anywhere within the hunting ground.
2. Action:
- Shoot Jaws:
- On its turn, the Orca may shoot once UNDERNEATH the Boat Token (Once Jaws has been hit, it must move its Shark Button on the Health Tracking Card one down, and move to one of the two Island Cards).
- Protect Swimmer Token:
- You can protect a Swimmer Token for just one turn by placing the Boat Token on top of it. Now, Jaws can't kill this swimmer.
- Jaws CAN'T swim underneath a card with a protected swimmer.
- Move Swimmer Token:
- You can move any Swimmer Token to any other Water Card three times during the entire game.
- You may move more than one Swimmer Token during your turn.
- Once you've moved a Swimmer Token, you must move the Swimmer Button one down on the Swimmer.
- Action Tokens:
- You can move any Swimmer Token to any other Water.
- You don't have to use an Action Token on your turn.
- After using an Action Token, you must discard it.
- You may use more than one Action Token on your turn.
- Extra actions: You can NOT use any of these extra actions in your very first turn in the game. You can use each extra action token only once. Discard after use. But it is up to you whether you use none, one… or even all 4 of them at once in a turn:
- Dynamite: You may place this Action Token between any two adjacent cards. You need to target these two cards. If you miss Jaws on that turn, the dynamite remains there until the beginning of your next turn.
3. Remove Water Card: At the end of your turn, you must always discard one Water Card, positioned outside the hunting ground. You may not remove Water Cards that are in the middle of the hunting ground.
Detailed Rules
Moving
- Empty spots in the hunting ground (where Water Cards have been discarded) may not be used.
- Jaws can swim underneath a card with the Boat Token on it. If the boat fails to shoot, nothing happens.
The Hunting Ground
- You're not allowed to isolate Water Cards from the hunting ground. Every Water Card must touch another card by at least one of its sides – and not just by the corners!
- Figure I in the guide shows example layouts of Water Cards: green check marks mark legal arrangements, red crosses mark illegal ones (cards touching only at corners, or isolated from the rest of the grid).
- Jaws is not allowed to remove a Water Card on which the Orca or Jaws itself is standing on.
- When the Orca removes the Water Card that Jaws is standing on, Jaws must move to one of the touching cards (NOT diagonally). Jaws must not reveal its new position with the Shark Token until after its next turn.
- The Island Cards must never be removed from the hunting ground.
- When a Water Card is discarded, an island card CAN get isolated from the hunting ground. In this case, move the Isolated Island Card to the spot of the discarded Water Card.
- The Island Card can also be moved when players are on it. They just move along.
Protecting Swimmers
- The Orca can protect different swimmers in following turns. This means that the boat can step on swimmer one and also on swimmer two in the same turn.
Beach Closed is a fun-filled game of chance and skill for the fun-loving and adventurous. The more you play it, the more skilful you'll become.
