The First Time You Play

Remove the cards from the shrinkwrap, and discard the waste.

Setup

  1. Shuffle the cards well.
  2. Deal five cards to each player, and place the remaining cards in the center of play. This is the draw pile. Players may look at their cards.

Who Goes First?

The last player to eat toast goes first, and play moves to the left.

How to Win

Play green and purple cards to earn Fun points. The first player with exactly 15 Fun points wins! If you want to be irresponsible like Mr Toast, play until someone reaches or goes over 15 Fun points!

How to Play

In The Mr Toast Game, players take turns either playing green and purple cards to earn Fun points or playing red cards to stop opponents from earning Fun points. Players can also play blue action cards to mix things up a bit.

On Your Turn

Your turn is made up of the following three steps. These steps are described on the back in more detail.

Step 1: Draw a card. If the draw pile is empty, shuffle the deck.

Step 2: Play a red card, or play a green card (with or without a purple card) from your hand as described on the back, or play neither, and move to Step 3.

Step 3: Play a blue card from your hand, if you'd like, as described on the back.

Playing Red Cards

Red cards stop your opponents from helping Mr Toast have fun by giving him chores!

To play a red card, place it directly in front of an opponent. You can only play a red card on someone if they already have green and purple cards placed in front of them. You cannot play a red card on a player who already has a red card in front of them.

Playing Green Cards

Green cards make Mr Toast have fun and can earn you Fun points!

If there are no red cards in front of you, you may place one green card in front of you. You'll earn the points shown on the card. Keep the card there for the rest of the game. You never lose points once you earn them. Wahoo!

If there is a red card in front of you, you cannot play a green card for points. You must first get rid of the red card by playing any combination of green cards (you may play more than one here) that add up to or are higher than the red card. Once you do, place the green and red cards in the discard pile.

Purple Buddies!

Fun is more fun with buddies!

Any time you play a green card/s, whether you are playing for points or getting rid of a red card, you may play one purple card on top of the green to increase their value. After you play a purple card with a green card/s to get rid of a red card, you must discard the purple, green, and red cards.

Playing Blue Cards

Blue cards are action cards, and they make all sorts of things happen during the game.

To play a blue card, read it aloud, and perform the action described on the card. Then place the card in the discard pile.

Exception: the Take a Break card makes a player skip their turn. Place this in front of that player so they remember to skip their next turn. They can discard it once they have done so.

No Way Cards

No Way cards (featuring Mope the Onion) are special cards that you may play to stop another player from playing a blue card or a No Way card. They can be played any time another player plays a blue or No Way card.

To play a No Way card on a blue card, announce you are doing so by shouting "No Way!" and place the card on the table as soon as another player is finished reading the blue card they'd like to play. That player must immediately discard their blue card. Any cards associated with the blue card go back to where they were before the card was played.

To play a No Way card on another No Way card, announce you are doing so by shouting "No Way!" and place the card on the table after the other player has placed their No Way card. Whatever action that player tried to cancel will then happen.

End of the Game

The game ends when one player reaches exactly 15 Fun points, or, if you're playing irresponsibly, it ends when one player reaches or goes over 15 Fun points. That player wins!

Example of a Turn

Player 1 has a red card in front of them, so they cannot play green cards for points. They can play their green 4 to get rid of their red 3 card, or they can play their red 3 on Player 2 since Player 2 does not have a red card in front of them. Next, they can play their blue Find a Penny card to draw 2 cards or their In the Trash card to discard the red card in front of them. Then their turn ends.
