Overview
- Players: 3 to 6
- Play time: 15 to 30 minutes
- Age: 13 and up
Word cards are used on both sides (※両面使います). Cards may be rotated when used (※回転させて使います).
Components
- Rules sheet (this document): 1
- Ring counters: 18 (3 per player colour, 6 colours)
- Initial cards: 36 (sets of 6 cards, 6 colours)
- Word cards: 164
Setup
- Each player takes the 3 ring counters of their own colour and 6 initial cards. Do not put the ring counters on your fingers yet.
- Shuffle the word cards well and place them face down in the centre of the table as the draw pile (山札). You may split the draw pile into several piles if that is easier to reach.
- Decide the first oya (親, the dealer) by rock-paper-scissors (janken).
How to Play
- Every player except the oya draws 6 word cards from the draw pile and places them face down in front of them.
- The oya lowers their face and begins counting slowly to 10. When the count starts, the other players turn over the face-down word cards they drew in step 1, and each player combines them freely with their initial cards to create the most irresistible proposal words they can.
- It is not necessary to use every card.
- Initial cards are used repeatedly until the end of the game.
- When the oya has finished counting to 10, the players in turn order, starting with the player to the left of the oya, each read out their proposal words. Each finishes by saying "Let's get married" (結婚しよう) while holding out their own ring counter to the oya.
- The oya takes the ring counter of the player whose proposal struck them most (最もグッときたプロポーズ), and that player's counter is received by the oya.
- Note printed on the sheet: it is easier to see received ring counters if you put them on your finger.
- All 6 word cards drawn in step 1 are discarded. The player to the left of the oya becomes the next oya, and steps 1 to 5 are repeated.
- Note printed on the sheet: if the draw pile runs out, shuffle the discarded cards well and form a new draw pile.
Winning: the player whose 3 ring counters are the first to be gone (3コの指輪が最初になくなったプレイヤー) is the winner.
Play Hints
- When no ideas come: use the initial cards to build "僕は" (I), "君を" (you) and "愛してる" (love) to make "I love you... let's get married..."
- Using every card is not always best: sometimes a better proposal comes from not forcing all the cards in. Example: "The hollow in my chest... will you fill it in for me? Let's get married..."
- Stacking cards can also produce striking words. Example: "You are as beautiful as the wings of a pure white angel... let's get married..."
- If there is not enough time to lay out the cards, ask the oya to count even more slowly to 10.
