Game Play in a Nutshell
Guess the most idioms and synonyms, and be the first team to cross the finish line.
How to Play
- Divide and conquer the players into teams of two. If you are playing with more than 8 people, or an odd number, feel free to use larger teams.
- At the beginning of your team's turn, roll the die to determine your brainy fate. a. If you roll a "Synonym Twist" (the red spiral face, see figure 1), one player from the rolling team and one player from the team to its left will go head-to-head in a battle of the synonyms to guess common phrases from the provided clues. Once the participating players have been chosen, have another non-participating player draw a card, flip to the Synonym Twist side, and begin reading the clues out loud. The participating player who correctly guesses two synonyms first gets to move forward two spaces on the game board. Be sure to switch representatives each Synonym Twist round so that all players on your team get their moment in the spotlight. b. If you roll an "X1" or "X2" (see figure 2), then an opposing team member will draw a "Mixed Messages" card and read your team three clues and 30 seconds to guess three idioms. When your team is ready to guess, flip the timer and have your opponents begin reading the clues. It may be a good idea to pass if you don't know the answer, because once the 30 seconds runs out, you are out of luck. You may return to passed clues if there is still time left in the round.
- Multiply the number of idioms you guessed correctly by the number on the die to determine how far you go on the game board. So if you rolled an "X2" and guessed all three idioms correctly, then you could move your team's pawn six spaces on the board.
- Once a team reaches the "Idiom Addict" spot, it must win one final Synonym Twist to be considered full-blown champions. On its next turn, the team in the "Idiom Addict" spot may elect any member of the team (even if that person was the last to compete in a Synonym Twist) to represent them in the Twist of Champions. All of their opponents must then choose one representative from the remaining teams to go head-to-head. If the team in the "Idiom Addict" spot wins, it claims its rightful title as victors. If it loses the Twist of Champions, play continues, giving the other teams an opportunity to catch up. Neither team advances its pawn as a result of winning the Twist of Champions.
