Classic Game: One Against One
Setting Up The Game
- Shuffle the 35 Location cards face-down to form the Location deck, and draw them at random to reproduce, in the centre of the play surface, the grid corresponding to the Hideout card (5 rows and 7 columns).
- Place the row and column markers around the grid as shown in the diagram below.
- Place the Turn marker next to the row 1 marker.
- Each player receives a score sheet.
- Randomly determine who will play the Ravager first: they receive 1 Ravager screen, 13 Footprint tokens and 5 Fury tokens.
- The Imperial player receives 3 Samurai profiles in a colour of their choice with the matching Samurai tokens, 3 Treasure tokens and the Hideout card.
You are now ready to play Hunt the Ravager!

The Vendetta
A classic game of Hunt the Ravager consists of 2 Vendettas. During each Vendetta, one player plays the Ravager, who seeks revenge, and the other plays the Empress, who directs her Samurai. A Vendetta lasts 3 Rounds, the Ravager attempting to steal a Treasure during each Round. Each Round lasts at most 5 Turns.
The player playing the Ravager plays the Ravager role; the Imperial player plays the role of the Empress.
Setting Up A Vendetta
-
The Ravager player chooses a Location of the grid, which is neither a Lake nor a Conflict, to be their Lair for the whole Vendetta, and writes its coordinates (column and row) on their score sheet. They keep this Location secret, since it is there that they must bring the Treasures they try to steal.
-
The Imperial player receives 5 Defence points which they may spend to place their 3 Treasure tokens. The sum of the Defence values of each Location cannot exceed the Defence points received. Each Treasure token must be placed in accordance with the following rules:
- each Treasure must be placed on a different Location,
- a Treasure cannot be placed on a Lake or on a Conflict,
- no Treasure may be adjacent to another Treasure.
The Imperial player then subtracts the sum of the values shown on the Hideout card according to the position of the Locations chosen for the Treasure tokens, and records on their score sheet any Defence points remaining; these will score victory points at the end of the game.
The Round
During each Round, the Ravager player attempts to bring a Treasure to their Lair, while the Imperial player tries to prevent them. At the end of their Vendetta, the Ravager gains 4 VP for each Treasure they have managed to steal. If they fail to bring the Treasure to their Lair, they discard that Treasure token, which then scores them no VP.
Setting Up The Round
- The Imperial player places each of their Samurai profiles on a free intersection.
- The Ravager player chooses 1 Treasure token from the grid and places it face-down in front of their Ravager screen.
- The Ravager player writes the coordinates of the Location where this Treasure was on their score sheet, in the "Start of Round" box of the current Round, and places 1 Footprint token on that Location. This is the Ravager's starting point for this Round.
The Lakes
The Ravager cannot end its movement on a Lake, but may cross it. Each time it crosses a Lake, it places 1 Footprint token there, even if there is already one (this lets you know how many times it has crossed that Lake during this Round).
The Turn
Each Turn consists of the following phases:
- Ravager Movement Phase (Ravager player)
- Samurai Movement Phase (Imperial player)
- Samurai Action Phase (Imperial player)
- Ravager Declaration Phase (Ravager player)
1) Ravager Movement Phase
The Ravager player resolves the following steps.
1.1) The Ravager player chooses one of the following options: devastate a Location (A) OR spend a Fury token (B). If they cannot resolve either, they are annihilated.
Exception: during the first Turn of each Round, the Ravager player ignores this step and resolves step 1.2 directly.
B. Spend a Fury token. It is thanks to an unwavering will and unmatched fury against the Empress that the Ravager has returned from the dead to take revenge. But if it is out of Fury and cannot devastate a Location, its ki fades and its quest for revenge ends immediately.
The Ravager player places 1 Fury token from their possession into the reserve. If they have no Fury tokens left, or do not wish to spend one, they must resolve option A. Each unspent Fury token will score them 1 VP at the end of their Vendetta.
Note: the Ravager player never tells the Imperial player whether they moved 1 or 2 Locations during their Turn.
Devastated Locations. The Ravager cannot devastate Lakes, Conflicts, or Locations already on their devastated side.
1.2) The Ravager player must move 1 or 2 Locations. Each movement is made to an adjacent Location. It may move to a Location and then return to the Location it was on just before.
Each time the Ravager player moves 1 Location, they write the coordinates of that Location on their score sheet in the box for the current Turn. If it moves 2 Locations, they write the first Location at the top of the box for the current Turn and the second at the bottom of that box. Whatever the number of movements, the last coordinates written must correspond to the Location the Ravager currently occupies.
A. Devastate a Location. The Ravager stokes its anger by laying waste to the Empress's lands. It may therefore devastate a Location instead of spending a Fury token to move. The Ravager player chooses either the Location it occupies or an adjacent Location, and flips it to its devastated side. That Location must be devastatable (see the "Devastated Locations" box above); otherwise the Ravager must resolve option B. Each devastated Location will score 1 VP at the end of its Vendetta.
Stopping the Ravager. When the Ravager is hunted, it discards the Treasure token in front of it, and you immediately resolve the End of Round. When the Ravager is annihilated, it discards the Treasure token in front of it, and you immediately resolve the End of Vendetta.
2) Samurai Movement Phase
During each Turn, the Imperial player may move their Available Samurai which are on an intersection at the start of this phase: each of these Samurai may be moved once and by up to 2 contiguous intersections.
The Imperial player may move their Samurai in any order. A Samurai cannot end its movement on an intersection occupied by another Samurai, but may pass through it. The Imperial player is not forced to move their Samurai.
3) Samurai Action Phase
Each Available Samurai may perform 1 of the following actions:
- Track the Ravager,
- Consult the Elders,
- Consult the Kami,
- Perform a Forced March,
- Hunt the Ravager,
- Continue the Hunt.
After a Samurai has resolved its action, the Imperial player flips its Samurai token to its Exhausted side.
Track the Ravager. The Imperial player chooses 1 Location belonging to the intersection occupied by the active Samurai which is not a Lake, not a Conflict, and not a devastated Location, to resolve the following effect. Effect: The Ravager player places 1 Footprint token on this Location, if they have visited it.
Consult the Elders. If at least one Location belonging to the intersection occupied by the active Samurai is a Village, the Imperial player may consult the Elders: they choose which Village of this intersection is consulted, to resolve the following effect. Effect: The Ravager player places 1 Footprint token on this Village, if they have visited it, as well as on each Location adjacent to this Village which is not a Lake, not a Conflict, and not a devastated Location, which they have visited.
Consult the Kami. If at least one Location belonging to the intersection occupied by the active Samurai is a Shrine, the Imperial player may consult the Kami: they choose 1 Location of the grid, other than a Lake, to resolve the following effect. Effect: The Ravager player places 1 Footprint token on this Location, if they have visited it.
Perform a Forced March. Effect: The Imperial player moves the active Samurai which is on an intersection to a free contiguous intersection.
Hunt the Ravager. The Imperial player chooses a Location belonging to the intersection occupied by the active Samurai and moves the Samurai's profile onto this Location:
- if the Ravager occupies this Location, it is revealed, the Hunt is successful, and the Ravager is hunted;
- if the Ravager is not on this Location, the Hunt fails, and the game continues normally.
Continue the Hunt. If an Available Samurai begins the Samurai Action Phase while on a Location, the Imperial player may decide that this Samurai continues its Hunt: it resolves the effect of the Hunt the Ravager action while remaining on the same Location.
Return From The Hunt. If an Available Samurai begins the Samurai Action Phase while on a Location, the Imperial player may flip its Samurai token to its Exhausted side in order to place this Samurai on an intersection to which this Location belongs.
Note: a Samurai whose Hunt has failed does not return to an intersection; it cannot move during the Samurai Movement Phase of the next Turn.
Visited Locations. A visited Location is a Location whose coordinates are recorded on the Ravager player's score sheet for this Round (that is, all the Locations the Ravager has passed through during this Round, along with the one it occupies).
Footprints. Any Location other than a Lake may hold only one Footprint token of the same Ravager player. If you must place a Footprint token on a Location which already holds one of yours, you do not place one.
4) Ravager Declaration Phase
Translator's note: the draft's text reads "Once the Samurai Movement Phase is over" here; the turn order places this declaration after the Samurai Action Phase, which is followed here.
Once the Samurai phases are over, the Ravager player states whether they occupy the Location where their Lair is:
- if not, resolve the End of Turn;
- if so, the Ravager circles that Location on their score sheet to indicate that they have successfully stolen the Treasure. Then resolve the End of Round.
End Of Vendetta
A Vendetta ends when the third Round is over or when the Ravager has been annihilated. Each player scores points as follows.
The Ravager scores:
- 4 VP for each successfully stolen Treasure,
- 1 VP for each Fury token remaining,
- 1 VP for each devastated Location.
The Empress scores:
- 1 VP for each remaining Defence point.
If this was the end of the first Vendetta of the game, turn the devastated Locations back over to their other side. The players swap their equipment so that roles are reversed, and then set up a new Vendetta.
If this was the end of the second Vendetta, meaning that each player has had the chance to play both the Empress and the Ravager, the game ends: resolve the End of Game.
End Of Turn
If the Turn marker is on row 5, the Ravager player is hunted. Otherwise, resolve the following steps:
- Move the Turn marker to the next row in ascending order.
- The Imperial player flips the Samurai tokens back to their Available side.
- Begin a new Turn.
End Of Round
Remove all Footprint tokens from the Locations.
If the Round which has just ended was the third, resolve the End of Vendetta. Otherwise, begin a new Round by carrying out its setup.
End Of Game
The players add up their VP: the player with the highest score wins the game.
In the event of a tie, the player who scored the most VP as the Ravager wins the game. If the tie persists, the player who stole the most Treasures wins, and then the player who devastated the most Locations. If there is still a tie, the players share the victory.
Two Against Two
A 2 against 2 game of Hunt the Ravager is very close to the classic game, with some notable differences. Consider that the classic game rules apply, unless stated otherwise in the paragraphs that follow.
Ravager Players
The term "Ravager players" refers to the General player and the Ninja player. They are on the same team, but cannot discuss secretly.
Each Ravager player must respond to the requirements of the effects of the Imperial players' actions, even the Onryō.
The first Ravager player to be hunted, annihilated, or to have successfully brought their Treasure to their Lair becomes an Onryō from the next Turn of this Round.
If both Ravager players are hunted, resolve the End of Round immediately.
If both Ravager players are annihilated, resolve the End of Vendetta immediately.
Imperial Players
The term "Imperial players" refers to the Empress player and the Prince player. They play in the same way and are on the same team, but cannot discuss secretly.
Setting Up The Game
- The Imperial players collectively receive 5 Treasure tokens; then each receives 3 Samurai profiles in a colour of their choice with the matching Samurai tokens. They place the Hideout card between them so that they can read it together.
- Each Ravager player receives 1 Ravager screen, 13 Footprint tokens in one colour and 5 Fury tokens.
Setting Up A Vendetta
- Each Ravager player chooses a Location to place their Lair and writes it on their score sheet. The Ravager players confer secretly over the choice of their respective Lairs and each notes the other's choice.
- The Imperial players collectively receive 8 Defence points. They decide together where to place each Treasure token. Then they subtract the sum of the values shown on the Hideout card according to the Locations chosen for the Treasures, and each records on their score sheet any Defence points remaining; these will score VP at the end of the Vendetta.
The Vendetta
Each Vendetta lasts only 2 Rounds.
The Round
At the start of a Round, each Ravager player who is not an Onryō chooses 1 Treasure token from the grid, places it in front of them face-down, writes the coordinates of the Location where that Treasure was on their score sheet, and places 1 Footprint token of their colour on that Location.
Ravager Movement Phase
The Ravager players decide between themselves who plays first for the current Turn. Each resolves their steps entirely before passing the turn to their teammate.
Available actions for the Onryō. For the Onryō player, the Ravager Movement Phase is modified: they may perform 2 of the following actions, and may perform the same action twice if they wish.
- Torment. The Onryō player places 1 Torment token on a Location. This Location is considered a Conflict until the end of the Turn.
- Haunt. The Onryō player moves 1 of the Treasure tokens on the grid to a Location adjacent to this Treasure's current position, other than a Lake.
- Terrify. The Onryō player flips a Samurai token to its Exhausted side. The Onryō player cannot target two Samurai of the same Imperial player during the same Turn.
Onryō. A player takes the Onryō equipment: they remain an Onryō until the end of the Round and perform the specific actions during their Ravager Movement Phase. As the Onryō is considered a Ravager, the Ravager players continue to choose the order in which they act during the Ravager Movement Phase.
Exception: the first Ravager player to be annihilated remains an Onryō until the end of the Vendetta.
Samurai Movement Phase
The Imperial players decide between themselves who plays first for the current Turn. Each resolves their steps entirely before passing the turn to their teammate.
Samurai Action Phase
The Imperial players resolve this phase in the reverse order of the Samurai Movement Phase: the second Imperial player to have moved their Samurai makes them act first, then their teammate makes their Samurai act.
Hunt the Ravager. A successful Hunt hunts all the Ravager players present on this Location.
If, following a successful Hunt, there is no Ravager player left who must still bring their Treasure to their Lair, or they have all been hunted, resolve the End of Round.
If at least one Ravager player has not yet been hunted or annihilated and has not yet brought their Treasure to their Lair, the Round continues normally.
Ravager Declaration Phase
Each Ravager player who has not been hunted or annihilated states whether they occupy the Location where their Lair is:
- if so, the Ravager circles that Location on their score sheet to indicate that they have successfully stolen the Treasure;
- if at least one of the Ravager players is not in their Lair, resolve the End of Turn;
- if both Ravager players have brought their Treasure to their Lair, or one of them has done so and the other has been hunted or annihilated, resolve the End of Round.
End Of Vendetta
A Vendetta ends when the second Round is over or when the Ravager players have been annihilated. Each player scores points as follows.
The Ravager players score:
- 4 VP for each successfully stolen Treasure,
- 1 VP for each Fury token remaining,
- 1 VP for each devastated Location.
The Imperial players score:
- 1 VP for each remaining Defence point.
If this was the end of the first Vendetta of the game, turn the devastated Locations back over to their other side. Each team passes its equipment to the other team. Set up a new Vendetta.
If this was the end of the second Vendetta, each team has played each of the roles, and the game ends: resolve the End of Game.
End Of Round
Remove all Footprint tokens from the Locations.
If the Round which has just ended was the second, resolve the End of Vendetta. Otherwise, begin a new Round by carrying out its setup.
End Of Turn
If the Turn marker is on row 5, any Ravager player who has not yet brought their Treasure to their Lair is hunted. Otherwise, resolve the following steps:
- Move the Turn marker to the next row in ascending order.
- The Imperial players flip their Samurai tokens back to their Available side.
- Return all Torment tokens to the reserve. Begin a new Turn.
End Of Game
The teams add up their VP for each Vendetta on one of their score sheets: the team with the highest score wins the game.
In the event of a tie, the team that scored the most VP as Ravager players wins the game. If the tie persists, the team that stole the most Treasures wins, and then the team that devastated the most Locations. If there is still a tie, the teams share the victory.
Conspiracy Game (Three Players)
A Conspiracy game of Hunt the Ravager is very close to the classic game, with some notable differences. Consider that the classic game rules apply, unless stated otherwise in the paragraphs that follow.
Imperial Players
The term "Imperial players" refers to the Empress player and the Prince player. In a Conspiracy game, they play together in a semi-cooperative way. They cannot discuss secretly. If an Imperial player succeeds in a Hunt, they gain 3 VP and their teammate gains nothing.
Each player will play one Vendetta in each of the 3 roles: the Ravager, the Empress and the Prince. As in a classic game, each tries to score more points than their opponents.
Setting Up The Game
- Randomly determine who will play the Ravager in the first Vendetta: they receive 1 Ravager screen, 13 Footprint tokens and 5 Fury tokens.
- The player to the left of the Ravager player will be the Empress player: they receive 2 Samurai profiles in a colour of their choice with the matching Samurai tokens, 2 Treasure tokens and the Hideout card.
- The last player will be the Prince player: they receive 2 Samurai profiles in the remaining colour with the matching Samurai tokens.
The Vendetta
A Conspiracy game consists of 3 Vendettas. During each Vendetta, one player plays the Ravager and the other players play either the Empress or the Prince. A Vendetta lasts 2 Rounds, the Ravager attempting to steal a Treasure during each Round, while the Empress and the Prince compete to determine which of them will hunt the Ravager for their own glory.
Setting Up A Vendetta
The Empress player receives 3 Defence points which they may spend to place their 2 Treasure tokens. They then subtract the sum of the values shown on the Hideout card according to the Locations chosen for the Treasures, and record on their score sheet any Defence points remaining; these will score VP at the end of the Vendetta.
Setting Up The Round
- The Empress player places each of their Samurai profiles on a free intersection. Then the Prince player places each of their Samurai profiles on a free intersection.
The Round
The start of a Round differs slightly for the Imperial players and is identical to a classic game for the Ravager player (steps 2 and 3).
Note: the Empress and the Prince track their VP individually during each Vendetta, using the spaces reserved for 3-player games on the score sheet.
The Turn
Each Turn consists of the following steps:
- Ravager Movement Phase (Ravager player)
- Samurai Movement Phase (Empress player, then Prince player)
- Samurai Action Phase (Empress player, then Prince player)
- Ravager Declaration Phase (Ravager player)
Ravager Movement Phase. This phase is identical to the classic game.
Samurai Movement Phase. This phase takes place in the same way as in the classic game, taking into account the following order of play:
- The Empress player moves their 2 Samurai.
- The Prince player moves their 2 Samurai.
Samurai Action Phase. This phase takes place in the same way as in the classic game, taking into account the following order of play:
- The Empress player performs the actions of their Samurai.
- The Prince player performs the actions of their Samurai.
Hunt the Ravager. An Imperial player who succeeds in a Hunt gains 3 VP. The other Imperial player gains nothing.
Ravager Declaration Phase. This phase is identical to the classic game.
End Of Turn. If the Turn marker is on row 5, the Ravager player is hunted. Otherwise, resolve the following steps:
- Move the Turn marker to the next row in ascending order.
- The Imperial players flip their Samurai tokens back to their Available side. Begin a new Turn.
End Of Round
Remove all Footprint tokens from the Locations.
If the Round which has just ended was the second, resolve the End of Vendetta. Otherwise, begin a new Round by carrying out its setup.
End Of Vendetta
A Vendetta ends when the second Round is over or when the Ravager has been annihilated. Each player scores points as follows.
The Ravager scores:
- 4 VP for each successfully stolen Treasure,
- 1 VP for each Fury token remaining,
- 1 VP for each devastated Location.
The Empress scores:
- 1 VP for each remaining Defence point,
- 3 VP for each successful Hunt.
The Prince scores:
- 3 VP for each successful Hunt.
If this was the end of the first or second Vendetta of the game, turn the devastated Locations back over to their other side. Each player passes their equipment to the player on their left, so that each plays a new role in the next Vendetta. Set up a new Vendetta. If this was the end of the third Vendetta, the game ends: resolve the End of Game.
End Of Game
The players add up their VP for each Vendetta: the player with the highest score wins the game.
In the event of a tie, the player who scored the most VP as the Ravager wins the game. If the tie persists, the tied player who stole the most Treasures wins, and then the tied player who devastated the most Locations. If there is still a tie, the tied players share the victory.
