Set Up
-
Choose Your Chef. Each player randomly selects a Chef card, then takes the House board, Furniture tiles, Chef standee, and Demon standee of the corresponding color. Additionally, take one of the yellow Quick Reference cards and two standee holders.
-
Create the Forest. Shuffle the Shifting Forest cards and place 24 cards face up (ingredient side showing) in the following grid. This will create the Shifting Forest where your Chefs will look for and gather ingredients. Place the remaining cards face down next to the Shifting Forest. These cards are the Shifting Forest Deck.
Note: Remember to remove 2 Demon Bait Cards from the deck before set up if someone is playing as Cream Chef.
-
Place Your House. Place your House board so that the door (in white) lines up with one of the cards on the edge of the Shifting Forest. Make sure to orient your House so that everyone is able to fit their Houses around the forest. Place your Chef, Demon, and furniture tiles onto your House board.
-
Conceal the Forest. Take a good look at all of the cards in the Shifting Forest. Once everyone has taken a good look, turn all of the cards in the forest face down (forest side showing). Make sure all of the arrows on the card backs are facing the same direction. When determining which direction to shift the forest, this direction is up.
-
Distribute the Recipes. Randomly deal each player a Blue Recipe card and a Red Recipe card face up. You must complete at least one of these recipes and return your Chef to your House to end the game.
-
Begin the Game! The player who most recently cooked something goes first. Play proceeds to that player's left.
Gameplay
During your turn, you may take up to 3 actions, split as you choose between your Chef and your Demon. You may take the same action more than once.
Chef Actions
Move. Move your Chef from your House into the Shifting Forest (or vice versa), or move your Chef to an adjacent space if you are already in the forest. Adjacent does not include diagonal. You may move onto spaces with one or more Chefs, and multiple Chefs may share the same space.
Look for Ingredients. If your Chef is in the Shifting Forest, choose a card anywhere in the forest and turn it face up. Once everyone has had a good look at it, turn it face down again.
Note: If you reveal a Wood Sprite or a Demon Bait from a Look for Ingredients or Gather Ingredients action, take the effect of the card (detailed on page 11). Then, replace it with a card face up from the top of the Shifting Forest Deck. When everyone has had a good look at the replacement card, turn it face down.
Gather Ingredients. Turn the card from the space your Chef is on face up. If it's an ingredient that is part of one of your recipes that you still need to gather, take the card and put it next to your Recipe cards, then shift the forest in the direction on the card (see Shifting the Forest, page 10). If it's not an ingredient you still need to gather, turn the card face down again. Your Chef must be in the Shifting Forest to gather ingredients.
Demon Actions
While Chefs move and take actions within the Shifting Forest, Demons move directly from House to House and do not move through the Shifting Forest.
Move. Move your Demon from one House to another. You may move into Houses with one or more Demons, and multiple Demons may occupy the same House.
Destroy Furniture. Choose and destroy a piece of furniture in the House your Demon is in. You can't destroy your own furniture. Whenever a piece of furniture is destroyed in a Chef's House, it has a negative effect on that Chef. Each piece of furniture has its own unique effect when it's destroyed. Keep any furniture your Demon destroys handy. It will be used as a part of scoring at the end of the game.
- Bed: When your Demon destroys a player's Bed, you may steal up to one ingredient from that player. The ingredient must be a part of one of your recipes that you still need to gather.
- Table: When your Demon destroys a player's Table, choose one of that player's ingredients. That player places the chosen ingredient on top of the Shifting Forest Deck.
- Chair: When your Demon destroys a player's Chair, return that player's Chef to their House.
Make Mischief. Name an ingredient, then choose a card anywhere in the Shifting Forest. Turn that card face up. If you correctly named the card, put that card on the bottom of the Shifting Forest Deck, then replace it with a card face up from the top of the Shifting Forest Deck. Once everyone has had a good look at the replacement card, turn it face down. If you did not correctly name the card, turn it face down again.
Gameplay Examples
Example 1: Gathering Ingredients. Olive Chef has Angel Food Cake and Classic Carrot Cake as her recipes. So far, she has gathered Carrots. If she reveals another Carrots ingredient card from a Gather Ingredients action, she can't gather it since she does not need any more Carrots. The revealed card is turned face down again, and Olive Chef continues with the rest of her actions for her turn.
Example 2: Destroying Furniture. Saffron Chef has Super Miso Soup as one of her recipes and has gathered Squash. Burgundy Chef has Egg Chop Salad as one of his recipes and has gathered Squash, Eggs, and Greens. Saffron Demon destroys Burgundy Chef's Bed, allowing Saffron Chef to steal one of Burgundy Chef's ingredients. She can't steal Squash since she's already gathered it, and she can't steal Eggs since it's not part of her recipe. She steals Burgundy Chef's Greens, leaving him to gather Greens again elsewhere in the Shifting Forest.
Example 3: Making Mischief. Salmon Demon names Eggs, then chooses a card in the Shifting Forest. He reveals the chosen card, but it's Onions, not Eggs. Salmon Demon turns the card face down again.
Example 4: Making Mischief, Part 2. Later in the game, Salmon Demon names Spices, then chooses another card in the Shifting Forest. Once again, he reveals the chosen card, and this time he's right! It's Spices. Salmon Demon places the Spices card on the bottom of the Shifting Forest Deck, then replaces it with a face up card from the top of the Shifting Forest Deck (Herbs, in this case). When everyone has had a good look at the new card, he turns it face down.
The Forest
The Shifting Forest doesn't like the Demons being in the neighborhood any more than the Chefs do, but it takes umbrage with the idea of freely giving its bounty to serve them. Whenever a player successfully gathers an ingredient, the forest shifts.
Shifting the Forest
In most cases, the Shifting Forest will shift normally when a Chef gathers an ingredient. To shift the forest, move all the cards in the row or column of the gathered ingredient in the direction of the arrow on the ingredient side of the card. This will fill in the empty space created from gathering the ingredient and create a new empty space at the edge of the Shifting Forest. Place a card face up from the top of the Shifting Forest Deck in the newly empty space. Once everyone has taken a good look at it, turn it face down.
When you gather an ingredient, your Chef will momentarily be left in an empty space. Your Chef will remain in that space, and the forest will shift underneath your Chef. Any Chefs on spaces that shift due to an ingredient being gathered, however, will move along with the Shifting Forest.
See Example 1: Shifting the Forest on page 12 for more detail.
Edge Cases. At the edges of the Shifting Forest, sometimes the arrow on a gathered ingredient will make the forest shift in a direction that won't move any cards. If this is the case, shift the forest in the opposite direction.
See Example 2: Edge Cases on page 12 for more detail.
Ingredients
Countless varieties of fruits, vegetables, grains, mushrooms, and more grow in the Shifting Forest. They would be easy to gather, if only they would stay in the same place.
Each ingredient card has two arrows on it. The arrow on the front (ingredient side) of the card tells you which direction to shift the forest when the ingredient is gathered. The arrow on the back (forest side) of the card tells you which direction is up.
Demon Bait
As delectable to Demons as it is loathsome to everyone else, Demon Bait offers your Chef's furniture a momentary distraction against imminent destruction.
When you reveal a Demon Bait card from a Look for Ingredients or Gather Ingredients action, take it and put it next to your House. If a player uses a Destroy Furniture action on you and you have a Demon Bait, they destroy the Demon Bait instead of one of your pieces of furniture. When a Demon Bait is destroyed, place it on the bottom of the Shifting Forest Deck.
When you take a Demon Bait from the Shifting Forest, replace it with a face up card from the top of the Shifting Forest Deck. When everyone has had a good look at the replacement card, turn it face down. The forest does not shift when you reveal a Demon Bait.
Wood Sprites
The Wood Sprites in the Shifting Forest are friendly, or at least they're as eager as everyone else to rid the area of Demons. They don't understand a word you're saying, but they have a general idea of what you're after.
When you reveal a Wood Sprite from a Look for Ingredients or Gather Ingredients action, look at the top 3 cards of the Shifting Forest Deck. You may choose and reveal an ingredient card that you still need to gather for one of your recipes, or you may reveal a Demon Bait card. Place the revealed card in the proper location, then place the remaining cards and the Wood Sprite on the bottom of the Shifting Forest Deck in any order. Replace the Wood Sprite with a face up card from the top of the Shifting Forest Deck. When everyone has had a good look at the replacement card, turn it face down. The forest does not shift when you reveal a Wood Sprite.
Forest Examples
Example 1: Shifting the Forest. Cream Chef gathers Mushrooms, leaving an empty space in the middle of the Shifting Forest. The Mushrooms card has an Up Arrow on it, so all the cards in the column below the empty space shift up to fill in the gap. This creates a new empty space at the bottom left edge of the Shifting Forest, which is filled by a face up card (Onions, in this case) from the top of the Shifting Forest Deck. Once everyone has a good look at the replacement card, it is turned face down.
Example 2: Edge Cases. Charcoal Chef gathers Honey, leaving an empty space at the upper right edge of the Shifting Forest. The Honey card has a Left Arrow on it, so all the cards in that row should shift to the left, but that would result in no cards moving. In this scenario, the cards shift in the opposite direction. All of the cards in the row now shift to the right instead, creating an empty space at the upper left edge of the Shifting Forest. The space is filled with a new face up card (Berries, in this case) from the top of the Shifting Forest Deck. Once everyone has had a good look at the replacement card, it is turned face down.
Example 3: Wood Sprites. Salmon Chef reveals a Wood Sprite from a Look for Ingredients action. He looks at the top 3 cards of the Shifting Forest Deck, which are Mushrooms, Eggs, and another Wood Sprite. He reveals Mushrooms and places it next to his recipe for Mighty Mushroom Gyoza. He places the rest of the cards, along with the Wood Sprite he revealed from his action, on the bottom of the Shifting Forest Deck in any order. He then fills the empty space from the Wood Sprite with a face up card from the top of the Shifting Forest Deck. Once everyone has had a good look at the replacement card, he turns it face down.
Example 4: Demon Bait. Burgundy Chef reveals a card from a Look for Ingredients action. It's a Demon Bait, so he takes it and places it next to his House. Later, Charcoal Demon uses a Destroy Furniture action while in Burgundy Chef's House. Charcoal Demon must destroy Burgundy Chef's Demon Bait with her action instead of one of Burgundy Chef's pieces of furniture. The destroyed Demon Bait is placed on the bottom of the Shifting Forest Deck, and the game continues.
Recipes
Demons are notoriously picky eaters (although their love of Demon Bait raises some serious doubts). Luckily, the Chefs are highly skilled in their craft and can make whatever dish is needed to oust this extraplanar annoyance.
The recipes are pictured on this page and the next:
- Mixed Mushroom Omelette
- Grilled Summer Salad
- Angel Food Cake
- Triple Berry Pie
- Super Miso Soup
- Ultimate Veggie Biryani
- Egg Chop Salad
- Berry French Toast
- Hearty Winter Stew
- Classic Carrot Cake
- Butternut Tikka Masala
- Mighty Mushroom Gyoza
The ingredient list for each recipe is printed on its Recipe card, not in this rulebook.
Each recipe requires 4 ingredients to complete. Ingredients you gather can be used to complete either recipe, but each ingredient may only count towards the completion of one recipe. See the Recipe Cards for specific ingredient lists.
Chefs
Each Chef is a master of their craft with a special ability that will aid them in their quest to quell the demonic nuisance plaguing their homes.
The flavour text describing each Chef is omitted here; the ability text is transcribed in full.
- Burgundy Chef: When playing as Burgundy Chef, you may move diagonally while in the Shifting Forest.
- Charcoal Chef: When playing as Charcoal Chef, score 1 additional point at the end of the game for each piece of furniture Charcoal Demon destroys.
- Cream Chef: When playing as Cream Chef, you start the game with two Demon Bait cards. Remove these from the Shifting Forest Deck before setting up the Shifting Forest. Place them next to Cream Chef's House.
- Olive Chef: When playing as Olive Chef, you may choose not to shift the forest after you gather an ingredient. You won't move any cards, but you'll still follow all of the other rules for shifting the forest after gathering an ingredient.
- Salmon Chef: When playing as Salmon Chef, you may choose to Gather Ingredients from the space one above you. Salmon Chef may choose to gather from either space when using a Gather Ingredients action.
- Saffron Chef: When playing as Saffron Chef, you may look at up to 2 cards instead of 1 each time you use a Look for Ingredients action.
Some Chef's abilities reward an active strategy, while other Chef's abilities favor a more patient play style. Find which one works best for you!
Scoring
The game ends when a player gets their Chef back to their House with at least one completed recipe, or when you can no longer replace a gathered ingredient because the Shifting Forest Deck has no more cards in it.
The player who ends the game may remove one Demon from their House for each recipe they have completed.
When the game ends, each player tallies their points based on the following five categories:
- Recipes Completed: 5 POINTS for each recipe you completed. Each ingredient you gathered may only count towards one recipe.
- Most Ingredients Gathered: 3 POINTS for the player who gathered the most ingredients. If two or more players are tied for Most Ingredients Gathered, all of them get the points.
- Most Furniture Destroyed: 3 POINTS for the player who destroyed the most furniture. If two or more players are tied for Most Furniture Destroyed, all of them get the points.
- Ingredients Gathered: 1 POINT for each ingredient you gathered. This includes ingredients used to complete your recipes.
- Demons in Your House: -1 POINT for each Demon in your House. Remember, the player who ends the game can remove 1 Demon from their House for each recipe they've completed.
The player with the most points wins! The Demons have been expelled and your house is safe, at least until the Demons get hungry again.
Note: The player who ends the game may not necessarily be the winner once points have been tallied.
Scoring Examples
Example 1: Saffron Chef vs. Cream Chef. Saffron Chef ends the game with 1 completed recipe, 6 ingredients gathered, and 2 pieces of furniture that Saffron Demon destroyed. When she ended the game, there was 1 Demon in her house. Because she has a completed recipe, she can remove this Demon before scoring. When the game ended, Cream Chef had yet to complete a recipe, but he had gathered 6 ingredients and Cream Demon had destroyed 3 pieces of furniture. When the game ended, there was 1 Demon in his house. The point totals are as follows:
- Saffron Chef: 14 points
- 1 Recipe Completed (5 Points)
- Most Ingredients Gathered (3 Points)
- 6 Ingredients Gathered (6 Points)
- Cream Chef: 11 points
- Most Ingredients Gathered (3 Points)
- Most Furniture Destroyed (3 Points)
- 6 Ingredients Gathered (6 Points)
- 1 Demon in his House (-1 Point)
Saffron Chef wins the game 14 points to Cream Chef's 11.
Example 2: Salmon Chef vs. Olive Chef. Salmon Chef ends the game with 1 completed recipe, 4 ingredients gathered, and 2 Demons in his house, one of which he removes upon his return due to his completed recipe. Salmon Demon did not destroy any pieces of furniture. When the game ended, Olive Chef had not completed any recipes but had gathered 6 ingredients. Additionally, Olive Demon had destroyed 2 pieces of furniture. Olive Chef did not have any Demons in her house when the game ended. The point totals are as follows:
- Salmon Chef: 8 Points
- 1 Completed Recipe (5 Points)
- 4 Ingredients Gathered (4 Points)
- 1 Demon in his House (-1 Point)
- Olive Chef: 12 Points
- Most Ingredients Gathered (3 Points)
- Most Furniture Destroyed (3 Points)
- 6 Ingredients Gathered (6 Points)
Even though Salmon Chef ended the game, Olive Chef has more points when scores are tallied and is therefore the winner.
Tie Breakers
In the case of a tie, use the following tie breakers (in order) to determine who wins the game:
- The player who ended the game
- The player who completed more recipes
- The player who gathered more ingredients
- The player who destroyed more furniture
- The player with fewer Demons in their House
- The player whose Chef is closest to their House
Example 3: Burgundy Chef vs. Charcoal Chef. Burgundy Chef ends the game with 1 completed recipe, 7 ingredients gathered, and 1 Demon in his house, which he removes upon his return due to his completed recipe. Burgundy Demon did not destroy any pieces of furniture. When the game ended, Charcoal Chef had completed 1 recipe and had gathered 5 ingredients. Additionally, Charcoal Demon had destroyed 3 pieces of furniture. Charcoal Chef had 1 Demon in her house when Burgundy Chef ended the game. The point totals are as follows:
- Burgundy Chef: 15 points
- 1 Recipe Completed (5 points)
- Most Ingredients Gathered (3 points)
- 7 Ingredients Gathered (7 Points)
- Charcoal Chef: 15 Points
- 1 Recipe Completed (5 Points)
- Most Furniture Destroyed (3 Points)
- 5 Ingredients Gathered (5 Points)
- 3 Pieces of Furniture Destroyed (3 Points)
- Note: These are bonus points due to Charcoal Chef's ability.
- 1 Demon in her House (-1 Point)
The score is tied, so tie breakers are needed to determine the winner. Because Burgundy Chef ended the game, he wins.
