What the Game Is About

You must move forward along the four different tracks: the forest, the mine, the mountain path and the railway. There you must collect as many gold sacks as possible. You must also avoid obstacles and traps along the way. You spin the spinner on the track, which shows which card you must lay to get the gold sack or to clear the obstacle. When you have gone through all four tracks, you may go to the witch and try to free Hugo's wife and children. There you can win even more gold.

Contents

  • Game board
  • 4 spinners
  • 1 card deck of 50 number cards (55 x 75 mm)
  • 4 game pieces
  • Die (1–3)
  • 1 sheet with gold sacks, Hugo cards and door cards

Setup

Assemble the spinners: carefully insert the pin. Press the round plastic piece up from underneath through the hole in the game board, then press the pin down into the hole in the round plastic piece.

Carefully punch out the gold sacks, the door cards and the Hugo cards from the sheet.

Place the gold sacks in a pile beside the game board.

Shuffle the door cards well and place them in three piles with equal numbers of cards in each pile, door side up, in the middle of the game board.

Deal each player three Hugo cards. Each player places their three Hugo cards in front of them, Hugo side up, chooses a track and places their game piece at the green arrows. No two players may be on the same track at the same time.

Shuffle the number cards and deal each player three of them. You must always have three cards in hand.

Place the remaining number cards in a pile (the draw pile) face down. The cards the players lay are placed in a separate discard pile, which is shuffled and turned over when the draw pile is empty.

Playing the Game

Once the setup is complete, you can begin playing. On each turn you must:

  1. Roll the die (1–3) and move the number of steps the die shows.
  2. Spin the spinner on your track to see whether you must pass an obstacle or may try to take a gold sack.
  3. Lay a number card with the symbol the spinner shows.

If you lay the right card, you clear the obstacle or get a gold sack.

If you have no card with the right symbol, you must still lay a card, but you miss the chance to take a gold sack or to clear the obstacle. If you do not clear an obstacle, you must turn over one of your Hugo cards.

  1. Draw a new number card.

Then it is the next player's turn.

If You Lose Your Three Hugo Cards

If you do not clear an obstacle, you must turn over one of your Hugo cards. If you are stopped by three obstacles and must turn over all three of your Hugo cards, you may not continue on the track. You are then forced to put back the gold sacks you won on this track. You must instead begin the next track, but you must wait until the last player has finished their track.

The Next Track

If you manage to go through a track without losing your three Hugo cards, you continue directly with the next track, until you have gone through all four.

When you start on a new track, you always turn your three Hugo cards so that the front side is face up. You keep the gold sacks you have collected on previous tracks (unless you lost them on the most recent track).

End of the Game

When you have gone through all four tracks (you do not need to have finished every track; you may have lost your three Hugo cards), you go to the witch and try to free Hugo's wife and children.

You do this by looking at the top door card in one of the three card piles. There are three possible outcomes:

  1. You free the wife and children and receive 5 gold sacks.
  2. You free the wife and children but receive no gold.
  3. You fail. Hugo's wife and children remain in the witch's captivity.

Who Wins?

All players try to free Hugo's wife and children.

The winner is the player who succeeds in freeing Hugo's wife and children and who has the most gold sacks.

If two or more players have the same number of gold sacks when they have freed Hugolina, the player who freed Hugolina first wins.
