Game board, 400 cards, 18 rose counters and 8 playing pieces (2 x 4 colours).
Game Preparations
Place the game board on the table. Shuffle the cards and place each deck face down next to the game board. All players choose a playing piece and place them at the respective Start space of their sex. Note: a couple's pieces must be of the same colour.
Aim of the Game
HE&SHE -Game is all about finding out how well partners of each couple actually know each other. The game can be played with each couple as one team as well as just between members of a couple. Such areas of your relationship are tested as Love and Erotica, Home and Relationships; the Past and the Future; Money and Work. If your answers match you get to move towards your partner. To win the game a couple must get both their pieces into Finish space in the centre. If only one couple is playing then the aim is get the playing pieces as close to each other as possible.
How to Play
The couple who have known each other for the shortest time begins. The turn goes always clockwise. The woman of the first couple starts and moves her playing piece to a square of her choice on the first column. Each square shows a coloured symbol to signify from what category she will take a card. The player takes a card from the deck corresponding to the square on the board and reads the question to her partner. Her partner answers the question by writing down the answer secretly. Next the partner who read the question guesses what her partner answered. If the answers match (see Matching Answers) the player gets to move her piece to a square on the next column. If the answers don't match, the piece stays on the same row. Either way, the turn goes to the next couple.
Moving the Playing Pieces
At the beginning of the game the first square entered can be chosen by the players. After this the following rules for moving apply.
- If the answers matched, the partner who read the question can move to a square on the next column that is in contact with the previous square (see picture 1). So there are always two or three squares to choose from. The player's are allowed to enter a square with the same category in consecutive turns.
- If the answers didn't match the player's piece stays on the same column but can move one square either up or down, so the category of the question may change.
More than one playing piece can be in the same square simultaneously.
Joker Squares
Joker squares are marked with a white colour (see picture 2). If a couple's answers match when they are in a Joker square they win a Rose counter. In case of a tie the Rose counters determine the winner. The Roses are also a mark that the couple knows each other well, the more Roses the better you know each other. Otherwise the Joker squares are just like all the other squares.
Matching Answers
Answers are a match if they are completely the same or if they can be considered to mean the same thing or are reasonably close to each other. Players should be the judges on this and use their common sense. This game is all about spending time together and having fun, so the answers should be accepted rather then turned down.
The Winner
When one member of the couple has reached the Finish but her partner has not, on this player's turn the player asks the question in the normal way and if the answers match the only member of the couple who still has his piece in play can move one square forward.
The winner of the game is the couple that knows each other the best and is the first to have both their pieces in the Finish space. Depending on the order of play the other couples have their possible last turn. In case of a tie, the couple with the most Rose counters wins.
Rules for One Couple
If just one couple is playing the aim is to test how well you know each other. Both players take a playing piece and place them at the respective Start space of their sex. The partners take two cards of each category and place them on the table face down. Then, in turn and in the same way as in team play, they ask each other a question from a category of their choice using the eight cards they have in front of them. The board is only used for moving the playing pieces towards each other, the players choose the categories regardless of their position on the board. Once a question is asked the card is discarded. If the answers match the player who asked the question gets to move their playing piece towards the other player. If the piece reaches the Finish and there are still questions, for each match after that the player receives a Rose counter. This way you can tell how well you know each other and which one of the partners knows the other better.
Have fun with the Couples Game!
