BUILD
Components (as labelled on the built board)
Divination classroom, Homework item, Ravenclaw character, Hufflepuff character, Potions classroom, Gryffindor character, Slytherin common room, Slytherin character, Staircase, LEGO Dice.
Aim of the game
Be the first player to find your way through the shifting Hogwarts castle to reach all your classes, collect the items you need to complete your homework and return to your common room.
Setting up the game
Before you start playing, build the game using the LEGO building instructions provided in the set. Building the game teaches you more about the pieces and how you can use them. This makes it easier to rebuild or change the rules of your game later on.
Build the LEGO Dice using the sides shown: one Marauder's Map side, two Rotate sides, and the three sides showing 1, 2 and 3 dots. (The set includes a tool to help you take tiles off the LEGO Dice.)
Each player, starting with the youngest, selects a house to represent: Gryffindor (Red), Slytherin (Green), Ravenclaw (Blue) or Hufflepuff (Yellow).
PLAY
Playing the game
Play begins with the oldest player and continues clockwise.
On your turn, roll the LEGO Dice and do the following in order:
- Carry out the action you rolled AND
- Move your character.
Shift staircases (die shows 1, 2 or 3 dots)
Lift and remove one empty staircase and place it next to the board.
You may not lift classrooms. You may not lift staircases with characters on them.
Now shift the staircases and classrooms around. You may make any number of shifts up to the number shown on the LEGO Dice. With a single shift, you may choose to move one, two or three staircases and classrooms any number of spaces in a straight line. When you have finished making all your shifts, place the removed staircase into the new empty space on the board.
You do not have to use up all your shifts.
Example of shifting staircases when rolling 3 on the LEGO Dice:
- Begin by removing an empty staircase.
- First shift: One staircase and two classrooms are moved together.
- Second shift: One staircase is moved.
- Third shift: Two classrooms are moved together. Finish by placing the removed staircase into the new empty space.
Rotate a staircase (Rotate side)
Lift a staircase and rotate it on the spot. You may choose any staircase, including one with characters on it.
You may not rotate classrooms.
Use a secret passage (Marauder's Map side)
The Marauder's Map shows you a secret passage, and you may now move your character into any adjacent staircase or classroom, even if it is not connected.
You may not move diagonally.
Moving your character
After you carry out the action you rolled on the LEGO Dice, move your character one step into a connected staircase or classroom. You may also choose to stay where you are. Unlike the other classrooms, the Divination classroom can only be reached on one side.
You may not move diagonally.
Examples of moving: Each green arrow shows one move into an adjacent and connected staircase or classroom. The red arrows show where staircases and classrooms are NOT connected. These moves are only possible using a secret passage.
Collecting your homework items
When you enter a classroom, take the homework item in your colour and place it on one of the spaces in your common room.
Winning the game
The first player to collect all four homework items and return to their common room wins the game!
Alternative shorter game: The first player to collect all four homework items wins the game.
The LEGO tilt: The best way to pick up your LEGO pieces is by tilting them before you pick them up.
CHANGE
YOUR GAME - YOUR RULES
The LEGO Dice gives you the freedom to change the game and make it your own.
You can change the playing area, the pieces and even the rules. Every little change makes it more and more YOUR game.
The secret to changing a game is to change only one thing at a time. That way, you can see if the change makes the game more fun. If it does, keep it and then try another.
Changing a game is always more fun when players do it together. That way, everyone knows the rules and knows what is being changed. Remember to make sure everyone playing is aware of any new rules before you begin.
Now that you know how to play the game using our rules, try one of the following suggestions to change the game, and then try to make one of your own.
Dumbledore assists you
Replace the 'one' tile with a red tile on the LEGO Dice and place Dumbledore on the stairs leading into Hogwarts. When you roll red, move Dumbledore one step into an adjacent staircase or classroom, then move your character. Dumbledore can always move using secret passages.
Dumbledore may not move diagonally.
If you move your character into a staircase or classroom containing Dumbledore, he will show you a secret passage that you can then use to move into an adjacent staircase or classroom.
Mrs Norris
Replace the Marauder's Map tile on the LEGO Dice with the brown tile and place Mrs Norris alongside the board. When you roll brown, you can move Mrs Norris into any staircase that does not have a character on it. That staircase is now blocked. Now move your character.
No character may move onto a staircase containing Mrs Norris.
Dueling wizards
When a character moves into a staircase or classroom containing another character, they must 'duel'. Each player must roll the LEGO Dice once and compare scores. 'Rotate' counts as 0, and 'Marauder's Map' counts as 4.
The character with the highest score wins the duel and may move the losing character to any empty adjacent staircase or classroom. If the scores are the same, the player who started the duel by entering the location wins.
Invent and share your own rules
Challenge yourself and see what new rules you can create. Try using the additional characters included - Harry Potter, Hermione Granger, Ron Weasley and Draco Malfoy - to change the game.
