Components
- 152 cards (40 Small, 68 Regular, 44 Oversized)
- 1 die
- 4 story boxes
- Rules for 4 games
- 21 tokens (12 seals, 1 harp, 8 additional)
Combining with the Base Game
We recommend first completing Part 7 of Battle for Hogwarts, and then playing this expansion, combining it with the components of the base game.
Goal of the Game
Together with the other Heroes, you must pass the trials and defeat all the villains and magical creatures before they take control of all the Locations.
Setup
Components for History 1
Use the following components: the History 1 story box, 12 seals, and 1 harp.
Leave in the box: all the other story boxes, and the 17 dividers.
Laying Out the History 1 Cards
- 3 Location cards (❶). Use the History 1 Locations. Place them face up, stacked in order.
- 8 Dark Arts cards (❷). Shuffle these cards into the Dark Arts deck from the base game.
- 3 Trial cards (❸) (see the next page). Place them face up in the middle of the play area, stacked in order.
- 4 Creature cards and 2 Creature-Villain cards (❹) (see below). Shuffle them together with 5 randomly chosen Villain cards from Battle for Hogwarts. Place the Lord Voldemort card from Part 5 face up on the bottom of this deck. Then reveal the top 3 cards.
- 12 Hogwarts cards and 20 Punishment cards (❺). Add the 12 Hogwarts cards to the Hogwarts deck from the base game. Place the Punishment deck next to the play area.
- 5 Hero cards and 1 Talent card from Part 6 (❻). Place your Hero card and your chosen Talent above your Hero board.
- 1 starting deck of Luna Lovegood (10 cards) (❼).
The setup illustration on page 3 of the booklet shows how these items are placed, labelled ❶–❼ to match the list above.
Creature Card Information
- Name of the creature.
- History number.
- Creature ability.
- Health — the number of Attack (or Influence) needed to defeat the creature.
- Reward — what you gain for defeating the creature.
- Dragon symbol — this symbol in the bottom corner marks the cards of this expansion.
Trial Card Information
- Name of the trial.
- History and trial number.
- Linked creature(s) — during setup, shuffle the cards of the creatures shown here into the Villain deck.
- Trial effect.
- How to pass — fulfil the requirements listed to pass the trial.
- Reward — the bonus the active Hero gets after passing the trial.
To pass most trials, you will need to play or acquire cards. When the requirement is met, at the end of your turn take the passed trial card. From your next turn onward, you can use its reward for passing. You can use the reward only on your own turn, even if the reward text says "Once per game."
Hero Health
The following is printed on the Hero board illustration on page 3 of the booklet.
Stunned (loss of consciousness): discard all tokens and half the cards in hand. Place 1 Villain Control on the Location. At the end of your turn, place your Health Tracker on 10.
Game Turn
Each turn consists of 4 steps.
Step 1. Reveal and resolve Dark Arts events and the Trial
Each Trial has a game effect that takes effect when certain conditions are met. After resolving Dark Arts events, check whether the Trial's effect is triggered.
Step 2. Resolve Villain and creature abilities
At this stage, the effects of some Trials are triggered.
Step 3. Play Hogwarts cards and take Hero actions
- Play cards to gain resources and use effects.
- Banish cards: some cards carry the term "banish." To banish a card, remove it from your deck for the rest of the game. If you banish a Punishment card, return it to the Punishment deck. In all other cases, place the card in the discard pile in the middle of the play area. You may either play a card to use its effect, or banish it.
- Attack villains and creatures by spending Attack and/or Influence. To defeat some creatures, you will need to spend Influence. Unlike Attack, you may spend only 1 Influence per turn on each active creature. For example, defeating Norbert will take at least 6 turns.
- Acquire new cards by spending Influence. You cannot use Influence that was spent on attacking creatures to acquire Hogwarts cards.
Step 4. End the turn
The first Trial, "Pesky Pixies Pesternomi!", reduces the number of cards a Hero must draw at the end of their turn if they have 4 Health or less: they draw 4 cards instead of 5. However, if the active Hero was Stunned, their Health is first restored to 10, after which they may draw 5 cards.
Passing a Trial
Before you draw new cards at the end of your turn, check whether the conditions for passing a Trial are met. If they are, take the Trial card. Its reward can be used starting on your next turn.
Game End
The game ends in one of two cases:
Trials passed, all creatures and villains defeated — the Heroes win! Congratulations! Your mastery continues to grow. Open the History 2 box and follow the rules enclosed with it.
Villains and creatures captured all the Locations — the Heroes lose! The magical creatures proved to be not so simple. You are not yet ready for History 2. Try playing this History again.
Additional Rules
Creature-Villains
The upper part of each card shows what it is: a villain, a creature, or a creature-villain. This matters when some cards are resolved. For example, Harry's Firebolt does not give him the reward for defeating a creature. Likewise, Death Eaters do not make Heroes lose 1 Health if a creature has been revealed.
Note: the History 1 box contains two creature-villain cards: Basilisk (Part 2) and Dementor (Part 3). Replace the corresponding villain cards from Battle for Hogwarts with them. They now count as a villain and a creature AT THE SAME TIME!
Trials
When setting up any game from this expansion, first take out the creature (and villain) cards shown in the upper part of the Trial cards. Add the chosen cards to randomly selected villain and/or creature cards so that the deck has 12 cards in total, including the Lord Voldemort card.
Lord Voldemort
As before, you cannot attack Lord Voldemort right after he appears. First you must pass ALL the Trials and defeat ALL the other villains and creatures. Then you may attack Lord Voldemort using Attack.
Banishing Cards
In ALL cases — as a reward for defeating a creature, or when playing Hogwarts cards — you are not required to banish a card. If you banished a Punishment card, return it to the Punishment deck.
Punishment Cards
Sometimes you may receive a Punishment card. Like the starting cards, Punishment cards have no value. While in your hand, a Punishment has no effect. However, if you discard it as a result of a Dark Arts event, a villain's or creature's ability, or even an effect of a Hogwarts card, immediately lose 2 Health.
You do not lose 2 Health if you banish the Punishment, or if you place an unplayed Punishment card in the discard pile at the end of your turn.
New Hero Cards
The History 1 box contains new Hero cards. You may replace the Hero cards from Part 7 of Battle for Hogwarts with them.
Luna Lovegood Cards
Luna's cards are played a little differently.
- Spectral-Astral Glasses let you look at the top card of the Dark Arts deck and either keep it there or discard it, so that it is not played on the next Hero's turn.
- Lion-Head Hat works in combination with brooms (Firebolt, Cleansweep or Nimbus), or with Quidditch gear in another Hero's hand.
Note: if you play as Luna, remove her Ally card from the Hogwarts deck. Remember that no more than four players can play, so one of the Heroes will have to sit out.
Hogwarts Cards (optional rule)
As an optional rule, once per game any one Hero may decline to buy cards in order to place ALL 6 cards available for purchase on the bottom of the Hogwarts deck, and reveal 6 new cards instead. This is useful if you cannot pass a Trial or cannot afford the cards you want.
Experienced Heroes
You may raise the difficulty of any game by increasing the number of creatures and villains in the deck by 2 or 3. As an alternative, you may start the game by placing 1 or 2 Villain Control on the first Location.
Storage
Besides the new dividers, this expansion includes dividers for all 7 parts of the base game. Use them instead of the 7 base-game boxes to store all the components of the game with the expansion, inside the Battle for Hogwarts box.
The three divider labels read "For storing the rules of History 2," "For storing the rules of History 3," and "For storing the rules of History 4."
