    • Want to Play an Epic Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle Game Against All of the Villains and Creatures?

Overview

It is time to return to the classroom in this expansion to the HARRY POTTER: HOGWARTS BATTLE game. You will take on the Heroic role of one of the original four Heroes Harry, Ron, Hermione, or Neville and joining the battle is a new playable character Ginny Weasley™, increasing the player count to five Heroes. This game is designed to be played over a series of four increasingly difficult Courses.

Objective

Playing cooperatively as the Heroes, you win the game if you complete the Encounters and defeat all of the Villains and Creatures before they gain control of all of the Locations.

This game must be combined with the core Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle game, starting any time after Game 6.

You can incorporate all of the content from the Monster Box of Monsters Expansion into this game as well! Each of the rules in this game will reference Villains and Creatures, but you do not have to have the Monster Box of Monsters expansion to play this game.

Set Up

Use These Contents

  • 10 Charm boards. Choose one. Place above your player board. (see page 6)
  • 1 Player board and Heart token.
  • 10 Influence tokens.
  • Pack 1.

Sort and Distribute Pack 1 Cards

  • 3 Locations (1): Use the Pack 1 Locations. These are double sided. Stack face up in order choosing the side on each card that corresponds to the number of Heroes playing.

  • 5 Dark Arts (2): Shuffle these cards together with the Dark Arts cards from HARRY POTTER: HOGWARTS Battle.

  • 3 Encounters (3) (see below): Stack in order face up in the center of the game board.

  • 3 Villains (4): Shuffle together with Draco Malfoy, Crabbe & Goyle, Lucius Malfoy, Dolores Umbridge and 4 randomly chosen Villains or Creatures. Place the Game 5 LORD VOLDEMORT™ face up on the bottom of the stack. Reveal the top three cards.

  • 29 HOGWARTS™ cards (5):* Shuffle these HOGWARTS cards with the other Hogwarts Battle cards. Reveal the top six cards stacking any duplicates.

*Four of the HOGWARTS cards are Ally cards for the original Heroes (Harry, Ron, Hermione, and Neville). Only shuffle these cards into the Hogwarts deck if you are not choosing that character as one of the playable Heroes.

  • 1 Ginny Hero and 1 Patronus Card (6): Place your Hero card and chosen Proficiency or Patronus card above your player board and Charms board. Included in Pack 1 is a Patronus card for Ginny Weasley. If you have not played the Monster Box of Monsters expansion, simply return Ginny's Patronus card to the box and choose a Proficiency card for her.

  • 1 Starting Hero deck of 10 cards for Ginny Weasley (7): Note: If you play with Ginny as one of the Heroes, remove her Ally card from the HOGWARTS stack.

Information on Encounter Cards

  1. Encounter Name
  2. Box Identifier & Order
  3. Associated Villain(s): Villain(s) listed must be shuffled into the Villain stack as part of setup.
  4. Encounter Effect
  5. To Complete: The requirement needed to complete the Encounter.
  6. Reward: Bonus for the active Hero when an Encounter is completed.

Many of the Encounters require playing or acquiring cards to complete. If you meet the requirement, you may collect the card at the end of your turn. On subsequent turns you will be able to use the reward.

Note: Even if the reward says "Once per game...," you may still only use the reward on your turn.

Gameplay

Each turn consists of four steps.

Step 1. Reveal and Resolve Dark Arts Events and the Encounter

Each Encounter has a game play effect that will trigger when certain conditions are met. Check for this after resolving Dark Arts events.

Neighbors: Each of the Dark Arts effects in this pack reference the term "Neighbor". Your Neighbors are the players to your left and right. In a two-player game, the other Hero only counts as one neighbor.

Step 2. Resolve Villain Abilities

Step 3. Play HOGWARTS Cards and Take Hero Actions

  • Use your new Charm Ability.

Example, the Cheering Charm board (three tiers, each tied to a Health value):

    • Health 10, 9, or 8: If you have played at least three Spells this turn, gain 2 Influence.
    • Health 7, 6, 5, or 4: If you have played at least three Spells this turn, draw a card.
    • Health 3, 2, or 1: If you have played at least three Spells this turn, roll the Gryffindor die.

Charms are tied to a Player's Health. Usually, the lower your Health the better the effect will be. A Charms ability can only be used once on your turn regardless of how much Health you gain (or lose). Before playing out all of your cards, consider which ability you would like to use on your turn and if you need to gain Health (or discard a card) to be able to trigger your desired effect.

  • Play cards to gain resources and generate effects.

Banish Cards: Another term used on some cards is "banish". When a Hero banishes a card, remove it from your deck. Place banished cards in the discard pile in the center of the game board. Cards can either be played for their effect or banished, but not both.

  • Assign Attack and/or Influence to Villains and Creatures.

Not all Villains can be defeated with Attack tokens, some of them require Influence. Only one Influence can be placed on each Villain per turn. For example, Cornelius Fudge will take at least 7 turns to defeat.

  • Use Influence to acquire new cards.

You may not use the Influence assigned to Villains to also acquire HOGWARTS cards.

Step 4. End Your Turn

Completing an Encounter: Before replacing cards at the end of turn, check to see if you completed the Encounter. If you did, claim the card. You may use the reward on a subsequent turn.

Lord Voldemort

As in previous games, LORD VOLDEMORT cannot be assigned Attack immediately. You will need to complete ALL the Encounters and defeat ALL other Villains (and Creatures) before assigning any Attack to LORD VOLDEMORT.

End of Game

The game can end in one of two ways:

  • The Encounters are completed and ALL the Villains and Creatures are defeated—Heroes win!

Congratulations, Flitwick is proud of your Charms classwork. You may now open Pack 2 and follow the rules enclosed.

  • Villains and Creatures control ALL the locations—Heroes lose!

Remember to swish and flick. You are not yet ready to move on to Pack 2. Reset the game to its starting configuration and try again.

Additional Rules

Hero vs. Ally

Each of the Heroes now have an Ally card. If you are playing as a Hero, remove their Ally card from the HOGWARTS deck at the start of the game.

Patronus

Included in this game is a Patronus card for Ginny. If you are familiar with the Monster Box of Monsters expansion, you already know how to use this. Patronus cards are Hero specific. This card will replace a Proficiency if you choose to use it. A Hero may never have both a Patronus and a Proficiency.

If you are playing with the Monster Box of Monsters expansion, you may choose between using the Hero's Patronus or a Proficiency card at set up.

Horse Patronus (Ginny's Ability): Once per turn you may discard 1 card. If you do, ALL Heroes draw a card.

Ginny Weasley Hero Ability

Ability: If you assign Attack and/or Influence to two or more Villains, ALL Heroes gain 1 (icon not legible in the scan; confirm against the printed Ginny Weasley card).

Banishing

Sometimes the reward for defeating a Villain includes the ability to banish a card. In ALL instances, from rewards or playing HOGWARTS cards, banishing a card is optional. If a Hero would prefer not to banish a card, they do not have to. The exception to this is Cornelius Fudge. When his ability triggers, ALL Heroes must banish the top card of their deck whether they want to or not.

Charm Ability

Most Charms have a trigger that allows a Hero to use its effect, either discarding a card or playing a certain combination of cards. Once the trigger has been met, a Hero still has the option of when to use the ability. Since a Charm ability is tied to a Hero's health, it is important to declare which ability you are activating.

For example, once you play an Item, the Summoning Charm has an effect you can use each time you play an Ally. If you choose the effect that gives health for each Ally and use it to heal yourself, you do not get to play another Ally and change the effect to gaining Attack. Once the effect is chosen it is in effect for the rest of that turn, but you can choose another effect on your next turn.

Summoning Charm board (three tiers, each tied to a Health value):

  • Health 10, 9, or 8: If you have played at least one Item this turn, gain 1 Attack for each Ally you play.
  • Health 7, 6, 5, or 4: If you have played at least one Item this turn, gain 2 Influence for each Ally you play.
  • Health 3, 2, or 1: If you have played at least one Item this turn, any one Hero gains 2 Health for each Ally you play.

Encounters

When setting up any game from the Charms and Potions expansion, first select the Villains referenced at the top of the Encounter cards. You will shuffle these together with a randomly chosen set of Villains (and/or Creatures) to bring the total number of cards in the stack to 12, including a LORD VOLDEMORT card.

Villains and Creatures

Creatures were introduced in the Monster Box of Monsters. At the top of the cards in this game will be the identifier of either Villain or Villain-Creature, this affects the abilities on certain cards. Harry's Firebolt which states "If you defeat a Villain gain 1 Influence", will not give the reward if he defeats a Creature. Conversely, the Death Eaters will not cause the Heroes to lose 1 Health if a Creature is revealed.

Pack 2

Object

The student cupboard has the Ingredients you will need to brew Potions. As in Pack 1, complete all the Encounters and defeat the Villains before they gain control of all the Locations.

Contents & Set Up

  • 3 Location cards (1): Use only the Pack 2 Locations. Stack in order with the correct player count side face up.
  • 6 Dark Arts cards (2): Shuffle together with the Dark Arts events.
  • 3 Encounter cards (3): Use only the Pack 2 Encounters. Stack in order face up.
  • 3 Villain cards (4): Shuffle the included cards with DOLORES UMBRIDGE™, CORNELIUS FUDGE, both DEATH EATERS™, LUCIUS MALFOY and 3 other randomly selected Villains or Creatures to create the stack. Place the Game 6 LORD VOLDEMORT™ face up on the bottom of the stack.
  • 10 HOGWARTS cards (5): Shuffle all HOGWARTS cards together.
  • 1 Potions board (6): Look under the game tray in the box to find the Potions board. Place it next to the main game board to the right of the Hogwarts cards section.
  • 13 Potions cards (7): Shuffle the cards and place them face down on the top of the Potions board. Reveal the top two in the spaces below.
  • 3 Ingredient chip sheets (8): Carefully punch out the chip pieces and recycle the waste. Place one ingredient face up on each circular space on the Potions board. Place the rest face down at the top.
  • 1 Potion shelf requirement (9): For your first game we recommend using side (A), but you may place either side face up to the left of the ingredients.

Distribute cards as in previous games.

Potions Board Details

  • Everything on the Potions board is designed to flow from the top to the bottom. At the top of the board are the deck of Potions cards and the Ingredients that have yet to be revealed.
  • The center section is where you will gather Ingredients from. Each turn you are allowed to take one Ingredient from each shelf if you meet the requirement. Check the requirements starting at the top shelf and moving down.
  • Ingredients gathered can be used in either of the face up Potions that need them. Place the Ingredient in one of the spaces below the card. Ingredients may also be discarded when gathered to make space for new Ingredients.

Brewing Potions

Potions do not need to be completed in one turn. Leave any Ingredients gathered and the next Hero can continue to brew an incomplete Potion. Once an Ingredient is added to a Potion, it cannot be moved to another Potion.

A completed Potion can be played immediately for its banish ability. Otherwise the completed Potion is placed in your discard pile. When it cycles back into your hand you have the choice of the first effect in which it will continue to stay in your deck, or to banish the card for the second effect.

Before refilling the shelves on the Potions board, first slide Ingredients down each column to fill any open spaces. Then add new Ingredient tokens in the empty spots on the top shelves. Used and discarded Potion Ingredients should remain face up at the bottom of the Potion board until there are no longer any tokens left to draw. Then flip the tokens over and move them back to the top of the Potions board.

Shelf requirements (side A, as shown on the Potion shelf requirement):

  • A Hero is Stunned
  • Heal another Hero
  • Assign 3 or more Attack
  • Acquire 5 or more Influence
  • Play 3 Spells

Information on Potions Cards

  1. Pack Identifier
  2. Card Type: Potions are their own card type. They are not an Item.
  3. Card Name
  4. Card Effect: Each Potion gives the Hero a choice of effect.
  5. Ingredients: Ingredients needed to brew the potion.

Potion Ingredients

  • Bicorn Horn
  • Mandrake Leaf
  • Flobber Worm
  • Hellebore
  • Lacewing Fly
  • Wild*

*Wild — can be used in place of any Ingredient.

Gameplay (Pack 2)

Gameplay proceeds with the same steps from the previous game, with an additional Gather Potion Ingredients step after playing Hogwarts cards.

  • Step 1. Reveal and resolve Dark Arts events and the Encounter.
  • Step 2. Resolve Villain and Creature abilities.
  • Step 3. Play HOGWARTS cards & take Hero actions. Remember to use your Charms ability.
  • Step 4. Gather Potion Ingredients. Remember that unlike Hogwarts cards, Potions can be used on the turn they are completed, but only for their banish ability.
  • Step 5. End your turn.

End of Game (Pack 2)

The game can end in one of two ways:

  • The Encounters are completed and ALL the Villains and Creatures are defeated – Heroes win! Congratulations, you have surpassed Professor Snape's expectations at potion making. Proceed to Pack 3, to see what else is brewing.
  • Villains and Creatures control ALL the Locations – Heroes lose! Professor Snape requests your presence in remedial Potions. Reset the game to its starting configuration and try again!

Pack 3

Object

Things are getting a little more dangerous now that Snape is teaching Defense Against the Dark Arts. As in Pack 2, complete all the Encounters and defeat the Villains and Creatures before they gain control of all the Locations.

Contents & Set Up

  • 3 Location cards (1): Use only the Pack 3 Locations. Stack in order with the correct player count side face up.
  • 8 Dark Arts Potion cards (2): Shuffle together with the Dark Arts events. (see next page.)
  • 3 Encounter cards (3): Use only the Pack 3 Encounters. Stack in order.
  • 3 Villain cards (4): Shuffle the included cards with DRACO MALFOY, LUCIUS MALFOY, TOM RIDDLE and BELLATRIX LeSTRANGE and 5 other randomly selected Villains or Creatures to create the stack. Place the Game 7 LORD VOLDEMORT™ face up on the bottom of the stack.
  • 14 HOGWARTS cards (5): Shuffle all HOGWARTS cards together.
  • 6 Potions cards (6): Shuffle all Potions cards together.
  • 1 Potions Shelf requirement (8): Place side A or B face up.

Distribute cards as in previous games.

Dark Arts Potion Cards

Dark Arts Potions have an ongoing effect. If you draw one, place it face up in front of you. Until the Potion is brewed, by adding gathered Ingredients to it, the Hero that drew it is restricted on what they can do on their turn. Any Hero, not just the one who drew the card, may add Ingredients to the Potion.

Gameplay (Pack 3)

Gameplay proceeds with the same steps from previous games.

  • Step 1. Reveal and resolve Dark Arts events and the Encounter.

Keep a Dark Arts Potion card face up in front of the Hero who drew it. Until it is brewed, they will resolve it first on each of their turns.

  • Step 2. Resolve Villain and Creature abilities.

The Inferi are both a Villain and a Creature. Cards that reference either card type will be affected by their presence.

  • Step 3. Play HOGWARTS cards & take Hero actions.

  • Step 4. Gather Potion Ingredients.

Remember the Wild Ingredient is a wild Ingredient and can be used in place of any Ingredients for a Potion. Additionally, some Potions will require the Wild Ingredient. Once added to a Potion, like all other Ingredients, these cannot be moved.

  • Step 5. End your turn.

End of Game (Pack 3)

The game can end in one of two ways:

  • ALL the Villains and Creatures are defeated – Heroes win! Congratulations, Slughorn is delighted to have you in his class. You are ready to open Pack 4.
  • Villains and Creatures control ALL the Locations – Heroes lose! Professor Snape is not surprised at your defeat. Reset the game to its starting configuration and try again.

Pack 4

Object

The final battle is rapidly approaching. As in previous Packs, complete all the Encounters and defeat the Villains before they gain control of all the Locations.

Contents & Set Up

  • 3 Location cards (1): Use only the Pack 4 Locations. Stack in order with the correct player count side face up.
  • 7 Dark Arts Potion cards (2): Shuffle together with the Dark Arts events.
  • 3 Encounter cards (3): Use only the Pack 4 Encounters. Stack in order.
  • 4 Villain cards (4): Shuffle the included cards with NARCISSA MALFOY, BELLATRIX LeSTRANGE and 8 other randomly selected Villains or Creatures to create the stack. Place LORD VOLDEMORT™ face up on the bottom of the stack.
  • 11 HOGWARTS cards (5): Shuffle all HOGWARTS cards together.
  • 3 Potions cards (6): Shuffle the cards and place them face down on the top of the Potions board. Reveal the top two in the spaces below.
  • 1 Chip sheet (7): Carefully punch out the chip pieces and recycle the waste.
  • 1 Potions Shelf requirement (8): Place side A or B face up.

Distribute cards as in previous games.

Gameplay (Pack 4)

  • Step 1. Reveal and resolve Dark Arts events and the Encounter.

The second Encounter requires that Heroes allow themselves to be Stunned. Once it is revealed, each time any of the Heroes is stunned add a heart symbol to the card to keep track. The additional control token that gets added to the Location only happens if a Hero is Stunned directly by the Encounter card and not to any other effect.

  • Step 2. Resolve Villain and Creature abilities.

  • Step 3. Play HOGWARTS cards & take Hero actions.

  • Step 4. Gather Potion Ingredients.

  • Step 5. End your turn.

End of Game (Pack 4)

The game can end in one of two ways:

  • ALL the Villains and Creatures are defeated – Heroes win! Congratulations, flip the page over for tips on how to set up future games.
  • Villains and Creatures control ALL the Locations – Heroes lose! LORD VOLDEMORT continues his reign of terror in the wizarding world. Reset the game to its starting configuration and try again!

Replaying Hogwarts Battle with Both The Monster Box of Monsters and The Charms and Potion Expansions

To randomize games, sort the Encounters from each box into three piles: 1 of 3, 2 of 3, and 3 of 3. Shuffle and choose one Encounter from each pile. These will be your Encounters for the game.

To create the 15 card Villain/Creature stack: First select the Villains and Creatures associated with the Encounters; then shuffle them with additional randomly chosen Villain/Creature cards to equal 14. Finally place the Pack 4 LORD VOLDEMORT on the bottom of the stack face up.

For a more challenging game try increasing the number of cards in the stack by two or three.

Want to Play an Epic Harry Potter: Hogwarts Battle Game Against All of the Villains and Creatures?

Stack the Game 7 Locations from the original HOGWARTS Battle game in order.

Place three randomly selected Encounters in order on top of ALL of the Horcruxes with the Pack 4 Encounter 2 of 3 The Final Horcrux on the bottom of the stack.

Place the Pack 4 Lord Voldemort card face up on the game board to start the Villain/Creature stack. Shuffle the remaining LORD VOLDEMORT cards into one half of the Villain Creature cards, place cards face down on top of LORD VOLDEMORT. Finally, shuffle and place the other half of the Villain Creature cards on top and reveal the first three in the spaces below.

When a Lord Voldemort card is revealed, you may assign Attack and Influence even before the rest of the Villains and Creatures are defeated. However, like Influence, you may only assign one Attack to Lord Voldemort per turn. The rule can be ignored if either of these two situations occur:

  • If both other Villain spaces are empty because the Villains have already been defeated.
  • OR
  • ALL of the Villain spaces either have a LORD VOLDEMORT card in them or are empty.

In either instance, the Active Hero can assign as many Attack as they have, but Influence can still only be assigned once per turn.

Remember, the final Pack 4 LORD VOLDEMORT cannot be assigned Attack or Influence until after all the Horcruxes are destroyed and all other Villains and Creatures are defeated including all of the LORD VOLDEMORT cards.

To win, defeat LORD VOLDEMORT before he gains control of all the Locations.

Good Luck!
