The Cards
To de-gnome your hand, you need to know your cards.
Character Cards feature one of six characters, each bordered by a different color. These cards assign a player their game character and color.
Challenge Cards display one of the six Character card characters and their color. Use these to challenge another player during their turn.
Gnome-Color Cards show gnomes on a background of one of the six Character colors. Whenever these cards are turned over during a game, the player with the matching color on their Character card must play the next card.
Gnome-Action Cards feature gnomes with arrows pointing in a clockwise or counter-clockwise direction. When turned over during a game, the arrow's direction indicates which player plays the next card.
Getting Ready
Unless you are playing Advanced De-Gnoming (see below), set aside the Bitten by a Gnome and the Nest of Gnomes cards.
- The oldest player starts as the dealer.
- Sort the cards into the groups defined above, separating the groups by color.
- Shuffle the Character cards and deal one card to each player. Set the remaining Character cards aside.
- Players place their Character cards in front of them. This allows the other players to see what character and color each player is.
- Each player takes a Challenge card that matches their Character card. Players should place their Challenge card in front of them within easy reach. Set the remaining Challenge cards aside.
- Set aside all the Gnome-Color cards that do not match any of the colors of the Character cards in play.
Note: the only Challenge and Gnome-Color cards that can be in play must match the colors of in-play Character cards. Do not set aside any Gnome-Action cards.
- Shuffle the Gnome-Color and Gnome-Action cards together and deal all the Gnome cards facedown to the players.
- Without looking at the cards dealt to you, hold them face-down as a deck in your hand. This is your Deck of Gnomes.
The printed setup diagram labels the Character cards, the Challenge cards, the Discard Pile and each player's Deck of Gnomes.
Let the De-Gnoming Begin
- Player to the dealer's left plays first.
- The first player starts the Discard Pile by placing the top card from their Deck of Gnomes face-up in the middle of the playing area.
- Each Gnome card placed on top of the Discard Pile has a color or an arrow(s) that will indicate which player plays the next card. (See When to Play a Card below.)
- When it is your turn, play, as fast as you can, the top card from your Deck of Gnomes by pulling it away from you and flipping it face-up onto the Discard Pile.
Note: since everyone must see the card at the same time, do not look at your card until it is on the Discard Pile.
- Anytime another player hesitates to play a card on their turn, or they play a card out of turn, you may challenge them. Grab that player's Challenge card and try to beat them to the Discard Pile with it. (See Challenging Other Players below.)
- Play continues from player to player until a player discards all the cards in their Deck of Gnomes. This player is the winner!
When to Play a Card
You never know who will play the next card. Play does not move in an orderly circle, but randomly around the table. The gnomes decide who plays next.
The image of the gnome(s) on the card identifies which player is next. If the card is a:
- Gnome-Color card: the player with the same color on their Character card plays next.
- Gnome-Action card: an arrow's arc, from tail to tip, determines the direction that play proceeds around the table. Blue arrows always are counter-clockwise to the right. Red arrows always turn clockwise to the left. The number of gnomes on the card, 1 or 2, tells you whether the first or second player in the arrow's direction plays next.
- Roll card (counter-clockwise blue arrow with 1 gnome): the player to the right of the discarding player plays next.
- Double Roll card (counter-clockwise blue arrows with 2 gnomes): the player TWO players to the RIGHT of the discarding player plays next.
- Loop card (clockwise red arrow with 1 gnome): the player to the LEFT of the discarding player plays next.
- Double Loop card (clockwise red arrow with 2 gnomes): the player TWO players to the LEFT of the discarding player plays next.
Play continues randomly from player to player as the Gnome-Color and Gnome-Action cards determine who goes next. Sometimes the same player will play more than once in a row.
Example of Play
Four players are in the game. Player 1 plays a card, turning it over on the Discard Pile. If the card is a Loop card, Player 2 will go next; if it is a Double Loop card, Player 3 will go next; a Roll card, Player 4 will go next; or a Double Roll card, Player 3 will go next.
If Player 1 turns over a Gnome-Color card with Player 1's color on it, Player 1 gets to play again.
Challenging Other Players
With gnomes jumping all over the place, don't get stuck with more gnomes than you know what to do with. When it's your turn, lay down your card as fast as you can or another player might beat you to the Discard Pile with your Challenge card.
- If a player hesitates to play a card during their turn or a player plays a card out of turn, any player may challenge them.
- To challenge a hesitation, grab the hesitating player's Challenge card and try to beat them to the Discard Pile.
Note: to challenge a mistake in play, such as playing out of turn, you must use a Challenge card. Mistakes cannot be challenged verbally. If a mistake is not caught with a Challenge card before the next card is played, play should continue as normal.
- If you beat the hesitating player to the Discard Pile:
- The player must pick up all the cards in the Discard Pile and add them face-down to the bottom of their Deck of Gnomes.
- The Challenge card returns to the player it was in front of.
- Then, players rotate the Challenge cards to the player on their left.
- If the hesitating player plays their Gnome card before you play the Challenge card, no one picks up the Discard Pile and play proceeds as normal.
Note: if you play the wrong Challenge card (it does not match the challenged player's Character card), or you play a Challenge card at the wrong time (when no one has made a mistake in play), you must pick up the cards in the Discard Pile and add them to your own Deck of Gnomes. This penalty is automatic and does not require the other players to play a Challenge card against you.
Example of Play
On their turn, Player 1 ("Fred Weasley") pauses before playing a card from their Deck of Gnomes. Player 2 grabs the "Fred Weasley" Challenge card and slaps it on the Discard Pile. Player 1 must pick up the pile and add the cards to their deck. If Player 2 had mistakenly played a "Harry Potter" Challenge card instead, then Player 2 would have had to add the cards to their own deck.
- If multiple Challenge cards are played at the same time, only the first correct Challenge card played stands.
Note: if the order of play becomes confused and no one knows when what card was played, back up to the last point where everyone remembers what was played. Return the cards played after that point to their respective players and start again from there. If that is not possible, simply pick a player and start again.
Winning the Game
The first player to discard all the cards in their Deck of Gnomes wins the game.
Advanced De-Gnoming
For more advanced play, add the following cards to the Gnome cards before they are shuffled and dealt to all the players (step 7 of Getting Ready).
Nest of Gnomes card: when played, each player must grab their Character card and place it on the Discard Pile. The last player to play their Character card must pick up all the cards in the Discard Pile and add them face-down to the bottom of their Deck of Gnomes. The Character cards return to the front of the players.
Bitten by a Gnome card: when played on the Discard Pile, each player must grab their Character card and hold it above their head. The last player to hold a card up must pick up all the cards in the Discard Pile and add them face-down to the bottom of their Deck of Gnomes. The Character cards return to the front of the players.
The player who must pick up the Discard Pile after a Nest of Gnomes or Bitten by a Gnome card always plays the next card when they are ready.
