Gameplay Changes
Place Buildings in a line.
Adjacency and order of Buildings in the center and in front of players now matters. When dealing Buildings to the center line, make sure to deal new Buildings from the deck to the end of the line, and to not rearrange the line. Similarly, when you acquire your first Building, place it to the left of your Player Board, and place subsequent Buildings you acquire to the left of your most recently purchased Building. The first Building you purchase is considered to be to the left of the Building printed on your Player Board.
Contents and Changes to Setup
21 Building cards – Shuffle these new Buildings into the main Building deck.
9 Boat cards – Shuffle these and deal some face-up to the center of the table. The number dealt should be 1 greater than the number of players (so 2 / 3 / 4 / 5 Boats for 1 / 2 / 3 / 4 players). Return any left over to the box.
Do not use the "Inland Traders" side of the Market board if playing with this expansion.
Hiring Boats
You may now move your pawn onto a Boat that's in the center of the table as your move for the turn. If you do, you must lose the resources shown on the Boat and move the Boat in front of you. You must be able to lose all the shown resources in order to gain the Boat. That Boat is considered to have been hired by you, and cannot be hired by other players until it is returned to the center of the table.
When you take a "Buy a Building" action, you may choose to return any number of your hired Boats to the center of the table to gain their dollar value for that single purchase only. No change is given if you provide more money than needed for the purchase. This may be done in conjunction with shipping goods - you may pay for part or all of the building by returning Boat(s).
Building Symbols
"Small Business" – new Building symbol
When you purchase a Building with this symbol, you may choose to pay $2 less for it. If you do, you must place it above a Building you already own that does not already have a Building above it. This is considered to be the second story of that Building, and thus does not count as a separate Building for the purpose of triggering the end of the game.
If you had the Building printed on your starting card, and 4 more Building cards, but one of those Building cards was above another as a second story, you would not cause the game to end.
The actions printed on a second story Building are still separate from the actions printed on the Building below it - you do not get to perform both actions when visiting one of them. It is still considered to be a separate Building for all actions that reference Buildings. Additionally, a second story is considered to be to the left or right of the Buildings on either side of it in the line, but not to the Building below it.
"Bonus Action" – new Building symbol
After purchasing a Building with this symbol, you may immediately move your pawn to a different, unoccupied Building or Boat and perform the related action. This symbol provides no ongoing benefits.
Variable point value Buildings
Some Buildings have a variable-value symbol (a flower-shaped icon) next to their point value. Their value varies, as indicated in the ability of the card. (Example: Dock Builder, whose ability is printed on the card.)
Notes on Particular New Buildings
Brewery – This Building has two action spaces, but you may only move your pawn to the second action space if the first one already has someone else's pawn on it.
Escape Room – As soon as you discard the third card, whether it's because it's your third turn on the Escape Room or because you revealed an Anchor symbol and discarded all of them, you are now free to move your pawn as normal. If the Building deck runs out of cards, reshuffle the discards to form a new deck.
News Stand – Normally buying a Boat does not involve shipping to the market, you are just losing the goods shown. When using the News Stand, you are instead shipping goods to the market to generate a dollar value, and then hiring a Boat that provides one more than that dollar value.
Dairy Farm – The bonus livestock is gained by the person on the Dairy Farm. If the Dairy Farm is a second story, it is very awkward because of the cows being upstairs, and the Building below it does not appreciate this. People visiting the Building below it do not trigger the bonus livestock.
Trading Company – Your pawn does not move to the newly hired Boat.
