Can I displace a piece on a route that still has empty spaces, and can the piece stay on that route?
Several players agree and the rulebook says adjacent routes, but no official post addresses it.

Yes, displacing is legal even if the route has empty spaces, though it is rarely wise. The displaced piece still has to go to a different, adjacent route; it cannot take an empty space on the route it was pushed off.
