4 hamsters, 1 hedgehog, 1 dice, 12 food tiles (4 carrots, 4 clover leaves, 4 ears of wheat), 1 game board with 1 elevator, 1 hamster wheel, 1 wagon, 1 gondola, 14 tree leaves, 1 set of instructions
Preparation
To get started first puzzle together the pieces of the game board. Place the wagon, the elevator, the gondola and the hamster wheel in the appropriate indentations on the game board, so that they can easily be moved. Distribute the leaves on the tree. Place three food tiles per player (each 1x carrot, 1x wheat, 1x clover) on the appropriate fields (*) on the game board.
Each player takes a hamster and places it in the living room. Lay the dice out.
The person who can puff up their cheeks to most look like a hamster goes first, and places the hedgehog in front of them. The starting player also looks after the hedgehog during the game. More about this later in "How to play".
Game material that isn't needed should be put back in the box.
How to play
Play in a clockwise direction. The starting player rolls the dice and moves their hamster the corresponding number of spaces in a direction of their choice. The elevator, wagon, gondola and hamster wheel count as one space, however moving the object doesn't use up a point on the dice.
If a player's hamster lands on a field with food (carrot, clover or wheat), they may take one of the food tiles and place it in front of them. They must then take these food tiles to the appropriate storeroom. Each player may only have one food tile in front of them at a time.
If you land in a room where another hamster is already sitting, you can give the food tile to the corresponding player. But only if they don't have a food tile in front of them yet.
Once a player reaches the right storeroom for the food tile that is in front of them, they may place it there. Surplus dice points never expire. Just move on.
Once a player has moved their hamster, it is the next player's turn to roll and move.
Before the starting player takes their turn, they must take one leaf off the tree and place it with the hedgehog. After all, the hedgehog needs a warm place to sleep through the winter.
End of the game
The game ends once you have stored the last of the food tiles in the right storerooms or when the starting player takes the last leaf off the tree and places it with the hedgehog.
How much did you hoard?
-
Did you get all the food tiles to the storerooms? Great! You're the best hamster clan far and wide, and can make yourself cozy in your burrow all winter long and enjoy a nice peaceful hibernation.
-
Are some of the food tiles missing? Oh no, you can do better! Next fall you will have to work hard to collect more food. It looks like you'll have to go on a bit of a diet this winter.
Variations for experienced hamsters
If you want to make the game a little more exciting you can put less leaves on the tree. This means that the hoarding time is a little shorter, and you have to move faster! How many leaves can you take off while still hoarding all the food tiles?
