120 playing cards (20 strawberry, 20 apple, 20 peach, 20 plum, 20 pear, 20 grape). Each card is numbered from 1 to 5, and of each card there are 4 completely identical ones in the deck. 1 rulebook.
The Idea of the Game and Introduction
GYÜMI is a fruit-rich, enchantingly simple, entertaining game for the whole family. The players' goal is to score as many points as possible by cleverly collecting fruits. All you need is good powers of observation and a reliable memory, because from every series we will see only the top card!
The game offers a different experience depending on the number of players: with 2 players, serious brainwork and a keen contest can be expected; with 3-4-5 players there are already many more tactical possibilities and the game demands greater attention - provided that you want to win - while with 6-7-8 players the game takes on the character of a cheerful party game.
Object of the Game
The players collect series (sets) of the various fruits of the game. Every player may freely decide how many fruit series they would like to start, but of one kind of fruit they can have only one series (e.g. in one's own play area there cannot be two plum series), so one can collect at most six series in total. Our aim is to put together, from the fruits we collect, all 5 cards marked with different numbers (1 to 5). If someone has collected a series that does not meet this requirement, they will score fewer points for that series, or no points at all (for details see the SCORING section). The winner is the player who, with the help of an excellent memory, scores the most points by the end of the game.
Setup
Depending on the number of players, a different quantity of cards is used in each game. Use the following table to prepare the game:
| Number of players | Number of cards randomly removed from the deck |
|---|---|
| 2 players | 30 cards |
| 3 players | 20 cards |
| 4 players | 10 cards |
| 5-6-7-8 players | 0 cards, since every card stays in the game |
Put the randomly removed cards back into the box; shuffle the remaining cards thoroughly and arrange them into a face-down deck. This is our draw pile, which must be placed in the middle of the table so that every player can easily reach it.
From the draw pile draw as many cards as there are players in the game, then lay them out face up in a row next to the draw pile. These will be the discard piles.
Whoever ate fruit most recently is the starting player. The game can begin!
Course of the Game
Starting with the starting player, and proceeding clockwise, each fruit-collecting player performs one of the following:
-
draws a card from the draw pile,
or
-
draws a card from one of the discard piles.
Note: From the draw pile and from the discard piles one can only ever take the top card. If a discard pile becomes empty in this way (since from time to time it will consist of only one card), immediately place a card from the draw pile in its place!
With the acquired card we can do one of the following:
- play it out in front of ourselves, starting or continuing one of our own series, or
- discard it onto one of the discard piles.
Playing a Card
If we decide to play out the card in our hand, we place it in front of us on the table. If we do not yet have the fruit shown on the card, we start a new series. If, however, we already have one or more of the same fruit in front of us, we place our card, as shown in the figure below, onto the already existing fruits of the same kind. We must keep the cards slid on top of one another by fruit type, in such a way that always only the number of the topmost card is visible; looking at the cards beneath is FORBIDDEN until the end of the game!
(Figure: six fruit series, each shown as a stack of cards with only the top card's number visible - peach 3, plum 1, grape 5, strawberry 3, pear 5, apple 4.)
This is why everyone needs to be able to see clearly how much a given player has collected in total from each series. A fruit series can consist of at most 5 cards; more than this of one kind of fruit may not be played out! We should strive to have every number appear only once in the series (that is, per fruit we need to obtain one 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5 card each). The cards do not have to be collected in the order of their ordinal numbers, so we may start a series with its 3 card, for example, and may finish it with the 1. Of course we can also collect them in order, but then it will be harder to reach more points.
Note: Every card played out in front of ourselves must be kept vertical. We may not use individual markings to memorize the cards (e.g. we may not rotate the topmost card by 45 degrees so as to remind ourselves of the absence of a given card). During the game we can rely only on our own memory, observations and sometimes our luck.
Discarding a Card onto a Discard Pile
In the game there are always exactly as many discard piles as there are players. These discard piles, however, are independent of the individual players, so when discarding a card the player may decide, for tactical reasons, onto which discard pile to place their card.
Unlike the cards played out in front of us (which we keep slid on top of one another), the discard piles are formed so that the topmost card completely covers those beneath it.
End of the Game
The game ends when the last card has been drawn from the draw pile. The player whose turn it is still plays it out in front of themselves or discards it onto one of the discard piles, and then the end-of-game scoring begins.
Scoring
At the end of the game the series are spread out and arranged in order so that every number is visible; then we check how much the players have collected of each fruit, and whether any number is missing from their series. The scoring of each series is as follows:
| Numbers of the cards in the series | Score |
|---|---|
| 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 - 5 | 11 points |
| 1 - 2 - 3 - 4 | 8 points |
| 1 - 2 - 3 | 5 points |
| 1 - 2 | 3 points |
| 1 | 1 point |
| If the 1 card is missing from the series | 0 points |
| If a number is repeated in the series | 0 points |
Attention! If one of the cards is missing from the collected series, the series is scored only as far as the series is continuous! (For example, with cards numbered 1, 2, 4 and 5 only the cards 1, 2 are scored, which means only 3 points!)
Example
Anna collected plums, apples, peaches and pears during the game. Her series look as follows after she spread out and arranged her cards:
- Plums: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
- Apples: 2, 3, 4
- Peaches: 1, 2, 3, 5
- Pears: 1, 2, 2, 3, 4
Anna gets 11 points for the plum series, since she managed to collect all 5 cards. For the apple series, however, she gets no points, since the 1 card is missing from it! For the peach series, according to the scoring table, she gets 5 points, since the 4 peach is missing from it, while for the pear series she gets not a single point, since one of the numbers appears twice in that series. By the end of the game Anna collected 16 points in total.
Peti collected pears, strawberries, apples and grapes during the game. His series look as follows after he too spread out and arranged his cards:
- Pears: 1, 3, 4, 5
- Strawberries: 2, 3, 4, 5
- Apples: 1, 2, 3, 4
- Grapes: 1, 1, 2, 3, 4
Peti gets only 1 point for the pear series, since the 2 card is missing from the series, and in such a case it can be scored only up to the 1 pear card! The 3, 4 and 5 pear cards bring no points in this case! For the strawberry series he gets no points at all, since the 1 card is missing from it, even though he collected the other four cards in vain. For the apple series, according to the scoring table, he gets 8 points, while for the grape series he gets not a single point, since one of the numbers appears twice in that series. Peti collected 9 points in total by the end of the game.
Lotti collected only apples and plums during the game. Her series look as follows:
- Apples: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
- Plums: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5
Lotti gets 11 points for the apple series, since she managed to collect all 5 cards. For the plum series, according to the scoring table, she likewise gets 11 points, since she managed to put that one together without gaps as well. Although Lotti collected only two fruits, by the end of the game she had 22 points in total, so she won the game.
Note: The maximum score attainable in the game is 66 points, which is not easy to reach! After the last card has been drawn from the draw pile, every player adds up the points due for their series. The player who has collected the most points wins the game!
Tactical Tips
- The most important thing is to always keep the fruit with number 1, unless of course we already have one of it. If the 1 card is missing from our series, then at the end of the game we get 0 points for the series, however much we collected of the other cards.
- Besides keeping our own cards in mind, let us try to observe our fellow players' cards as well. During the game a situation may arise several times in which we can thwart our fellow players in scoring: when, for example, we have to choose a discard pile onto which to discard our card, choose the pile on whose top lies a card that would bring points to one of our fellow players.
- Of every card there are 4 identical ones in the game by default. If we see the third card of a kind on the table (on top of the discard piles and at our fellow players in total), then it is worth drawing it and keeping it, especially if its number is 1, 2 or 3.
- The more of us are playing, the smaller the chance of collecting all five cards of all six fruits, so in this case let us try to play it safe and collect fruits that have been played out the least by others in front of themselves.
- It is worth collecting only as many kinds of fruit as we can keep in mind. The more we divide our attention, the smaller the chance we will obtain the maximum score for our series.
- Let us try to work out some system for collecting the series, because if we collect the cards merely at random, it will not be easy to keep in mind what we have put down in front of ourselves so far.
