Game Components

  • 60 cards:
    • 12 character cards (2 cards each for 6 characters)
    • 3 "Stinky Cheese" cards
    • 6 rank cards
    • 39 action cards

Object of the Game

Each player tries to bring their own character to rank 1 on the popularity scale. To do this, each round they take cards to move forward. Most cards are positive, but some are negative. Players may decide for themselves which cards to reveal and how many. Whoever risks too much and reveals the "Stinky Cheese" receives the "cheese curse" and falls back on the popularity scale.

Game Setup

The rank cards are laid out in a row in the middle of the table. The cards are sorted in ascending order, i.e. the card with rank 51 is at the far left and the card with rank 2 is at the far right.

Each player chooses one character and takes both cards of that character. Any surplus character cards are not needed and go back into the box.

The oldest player becomes the starting player and begins the game with the "cheese curse" in the form of the Stinky Cheese card. The player to the right of the starting player places their character card in the row, to the left of the rank 51 card. The other players place their character cards to the left as well, going counterclockwise. Each player places their second character card face up in front of themselves.

The action cards are shuffled and placed in the middle of the table as a face-down draw pile. A discard pile is formed next to it during the game.

One Stinky Cheese card is set aside. The two other Stinky Cheese cards are not needed and go back into the box. They are only spares, to replace a heavily worn card.

The Cheese Curse

One of the players has the "cheese curse": they must take on all tasks that belong to the game, such as shuffling the cards, clearing them away, preparing them, and so on. Tasks that are not part of the game (fetching drinks, ...) are not among their duties and cannot be imposed on them.

If one of the other players accidentally shuffles, clears away, or does something similar to the action cards, they immediately receive the "cheese curse" and drop 3 places on the popularity scale!

Playing the Game

The player with the "cheese curse" takes the Stinky Cheese card and three action cards from the draw pile and shuffles them face down. They then hold the cards out to the player whose turn it is. That player takes one of the cards and reveals it.

  • If it is an action card, they may choose to end their turn. Then they move their position in the row according to the revealed values. The revealed card goes onto the discard pile. If they do not want to end their turn yet, they may reveal another card. They may do this for as long as they like, until they voluntarily end their turn.
  • If the Stinky Cheese card is revealed, the player's turn ends. They move their position in the ranking according to the revealed values. In addition, this player now has the "cheese curse" and must take on all the tasks that arise.

After the scoring, the player with the "cheese curse" places all revealed action cards (except the Stinky Cheese card) on the discard pile. They then take all unrevealed cards from the previous round, the Stinky Cheese card, and three additional action cards from the draw pile. They shuffle these cards and offer them to the next player.

Note: Three cards are always added from the draw pile to the unrevealed cards! This can change the number of cards from turn to turn! But the Stinky Cheese card must always be among them!

When the player with the "cheese curse" comes to turn themselves, they proceed as described above: they take the remaining cards of the previous player, the Stinky Cheese card, add three action cards from the draw pile, and shuffle the cards. The player to their right may cut the deck once more. Then the player with the "cheese curse" reveals at least three cards. If the Stinky Cheese card is among them, they keep the "cheese curse" and the game continues with the next player. However, all action cards are discarded, and the player with the "cheese curse" keeps their place in the ranking.

If the Stinky Cheese card was not revealed, they have shed the "cheese curse" and may choose one fellow player, who from then on has the "cheese curse." Furthermore, they may change their position according to the revealed cards. The player who received the "cheese curse" immediately loses 3 places in the ranking.

When the draw pile of action cards runs out, the player with the "cheese curse" shuffles the discard pile and forms a new draw pile from it.

If, based on the values of the revealed card, a player would move beyond the first position or behind the last position, they remain on the first or last place respectively.

Example

Greg is up and Rupert has the "cheese curse": Rupert takes the Stinky Cheese card and 3 action cards from the draw pile, shuffles them, and holds the cards out to Greg. Greg takes one of them; it is "Plaster Cast," a positive card. Greg decides to take another card. This time he gets "Wrestling." Now Greg decides to stop and moves up 3 positions.

Rupert places the two drawn cards on the discard pile and draws three new action cards from the draw pile. He takes the two remaining cards, shuffles them together with the three new action cards, and holds the five cards out to the next player, Finley. Finley first takes one card ("Building a Robot"), then another, and in doing so gets the "Stinky Cheese." From now on he has the "cheese curse." He loses 2 positions, but since he was almost at the end of the row, he cannot fall back further than directly behind Rupert. From now on Finley must take on the tasks that arise (clearing cards, shuffling, ...).

Ending the Game

The game ends after a player has arrived at the far right position in the row. Then every player, including the player who triggered the end of the game, takes one more turn. Whoever is then furthest to the right is the most popular student and has won. However, a player who has the "cheese curse" cannot win. In that case, the player who comes next in the ranking wins.
