Setup

Take all cards out of the box and shuffle them face down. Place the deck face down in the middle of the table. Whoever most recently had a birthday may grant entry first.

Components

  • 60 word cards (Begriffskarten)

Goal of the Game

Find the secret rule to pass through the door.

How to Play

Cooperative Variant

Step 1 – Set the rule!

Decide together first which difficulty level you want to play. The top word on the card is easy to guess, the middle word is somewhat harder, and the bottom word is the hardest.

Do you have the honour of granting entry first? Then take a card from the deck face down. The difficulty level you chose sets the rule. Make sure that all words named by the others match this rule. Only then may you grant entry. Now name a first word as a starting hint that fits the current rule.

Example: You agree on the highest difficulty level. Claire draws a card and may therefore only grant entry if the named word is an upholstered piece of furniture.

Step 2 – Name words that fit the rule!

The others take turns clockwise naming words that, in their opinion, match the rule. If the named word matches the rule, they may pass. If it does not match the rule, they may not pass. It works like this:

Tobi says, for example: "I go through the green glass door and take along: an armchair." Claire answers: "Yes, you may go through the green glass door." Then Laura is up and says: "I go through the green glass door and take along: a dining table." The object does not match the rule "an upholstered piece of furniture", so Claire says: "No, you may not go through the green glass door."

Step 3 – Guess the rule!

Now take turns trying to guess the rule. Discuss with each other how the possible rule could be worded. The person granting entry may also give tips.

As a group you may decide at any time to name the rule. In total you have three attempts. After that you have lost the game.

Do you believe you have found the rule? Then formulate it precisely, e.g. "You may only go through the green glass door if you take along ...". The person granting entry must now say whether your rule is right or not.

  • The rule is wrong? Then continue guessing.
  • You have guessed the rule correctly? Then the next person clockwise is up. You choose a difficulty level and that person draws a card. The game starts over.

Competitive Variant

In the competitive variant you first play by the known rules. You name words one after another. Once you have named a word, you learn whether it fits the rule or not.

But watch out! Now you can decide whether you want to guess the rule or let the game move on to the next person.

  • You have guessed the rule correctly? Congratulations! You have won!
  • You have not guessed the rule correctly? Attention! You now have only two guessing attempts left. After that you drop out of the current round.

Tip

Keep in mind that the rule can relate to various things, such as objects, properties, places, names or people. When stating a rule, you only need to give its meaning, not its exact wording. In case of doubt, the person granting entry always decides whether the stated rule fits.

Note

You may also invent your own rules that are not on the cards and shape the game as you like. Make sure to judge the words fairly and not to water down the rule.
