Character Cards
Players can play as any of the seven Goonies. During setup, each player chooses a Goonie to play.
Each Goonie has a permanent character ability, which can be used at any time during team actions, even several times per turn (unless stated otherwise).
Each character also has a special action that can be used only once per game and only during team actions (with the exception of Data). Once you have used your character's special action, flip the character card to its other side as a reminder.
When you clear an obstacle with a map or doubloon by yourself, you may draw a card.
Once per game, you may choose a discarded encounter card and resolve it again immediately.
Item Cards
Item cards rotate depending on their purpose in the game.
Item cards are usually played in the "item position." The item on the card is shown on the left. Items are used when taking actions.
The item's location is shown in the lower right and by the card's color. An item's location is used when moving the GOONIES.
When placing obstacles, the item card is placed horizontally below the location and can be stacked to hide the item.
An item in the obstacle position shows:
- Which item cards are needed to remove an obstacle.
- Whether the item card is a starting obstacle.
- Whether there is an escalate effect (see page 10).
- Which location the item belongs to.
Encounter Cards
There are two different types of encounter cards: Goonie cards and Fratelli cards. When an encounter card is drawn, the card's effect is resolved immediately.
Goonie cards provide a benefit for you. After resolving the effect of a Goonie encounter card, discard it. If the effect of a Goonie card applies to the following turn, place it face up in the encounter area until the end of the next turn.
Fratelli cards interfere with you. When you draw a Fratelli card as the result of an encounter, resolve its effect immediately, then place it face up in the encounter area. This area tracks how many Fratelli cards have been played.
Remember: you lose the game if there are five Fratelli cards in the encounter area at any time!
When resolving a Fratelli card requires you to add an obstacle on top of a location, the escalate effect does not apply.
Location Cards
There are five locations that the Goonies can explore to find treasure. The face of the cards shows the location's number and name.
When the treasure is found at a location, the location card is turned over to reveal a threat. Each location has three possible threats. During setup, one threat from each location is drawn at random and the cards are placed face up in ascending order to the right (as shown above).
Location cards with the symbol in the lower left of the threat side are the recommended starting location cards.
Route Tiles
To find the treasure, you have to trace the route to One-Eyed Willy's ship (see page 9).
An untraced tile shows the item that is required to trace a route. There is a route tile for each type of item.
At the start of the game, you will always have one route already traced. The assigned tile is determined when the item card is flipped during setup (step 9).
Exploration Tiles
Each location has three exploration tiles: two traps and one treasure. These are shuffled and placed with the number side facing up over the corresponding location during setup.
Goonies and Ship Card
You may use any Goonies card or the Goonies meeple to show which location the Goonies are currently at.
Challenge Cards
Challenge cards add extra difficulty to the game (see page 11). Each card has an additional effect that lasts the whole game. They are not recommended for new players.
Objective of the Game
Each player represents a member of the Goonies, and you must all work together as a team. Unlike most games, in The Goonies: Adventure Card Game, players do not take individual turns. You will collectively pool your cards to take team actions, cooperating each turn to remove obstacles, move between locations, evade the Fratellis, and trace a route to One-Eyed Willy's ship.
To win, you must uncover the treasure at each of the five locations and successfully store them along the previously assigned routes. Each turn, more obstacles will appear — perhaps even Fratellis!
The game is LOST if: five obstacles are present at any single location, if there are five Fratelli cards in play, or if the encounter deck runs out.
Setup
- Find the 5 location cards marked with the symbol. Place them in a row starting with 1 and ending with 5. The location name should be face up.
- Place the ship card to one side. Place the five route tiles ("untraced" side up) below the ship card.
- Shuffle the three exploration tiles that match each location and place them face down over the matching location.
- Find the 10 item cards marked with the symbol. Place them over their matching locations (two per location). These are the starting obstacles.
- Shuffle the other 50 item cards; deal two to each player, face up, then place the remaining cards face down to one side. Note: in a 2-player game, deal three item cards instead of two.
- Shuffle all the encounter cards and place them face down to one side.
- Each player chooses a character card of their choice, placing it in front of them so that the "once per game" text is face up.
- Place the Goonies (you may use the card or the meeple) beside location 1.
- Draw the top card of the item deck and place it at the matching location as an additional obstacle. Flip the route tile that matches this item; this route is traced to start the game.
How to Play
The game is played over a series of rounds, until one of the Victory or Defeat conditions is met (see page 11).
Each round consists of four distinct steps, in this order:
- Take team actions.
- Discard used items.
- Draw new items.
- Escalate.
1. Take Team Actions
During this step players collectively take four team actions. These team actions can be taken in any order and each action can be taken multiple times per turn. Each action requires at least one item. Several players can contribute items from their hand when an action requires more than one item.
The 2-for-1 Rule: At any time during the game, you may play two matching item cards in place of any other item card (for example, you can play two music notes instead of a lantern, or two matching locations instead). When this happens, the two item cards can be contributed by two different players.
Item cards used to take an action are played to one side in the action area (they are not discarded), forming a separate pile for each action to keep track of how many actions have been taken. Once all 4 team actions have been taken, move on to the next step.
If the team decides to take fewer than four actions, all players draw an additional item card during step 3, "Draw New Items" (see page 10).
Note: this can and should be done as often as necessary to increase the flow of cards — even on the first turn!
Available Team Actions
Move the Goonies
To move the Goonies to a location, you must play a card of the location you want to move to (see Fig. 1). Once you have done this, place the Goonies at that location.
The location is indicated by the color of the item card and the roman numeral.
Remember the 2-for-1 rule: you can play two matching item cards (i.e., two of the same color) in place of any other item card. This can help you when you want to move to a location but no one on the team has an item card matching that location.
Moving once (no matter how many item cards are used) counts as one action.
Example A: The Goonies are currently at location I. The team wants to move to location II, but no one has an item card of "II." Chunk and Stef each contribute an item card of "III" to take the move action (both cards count as one action). They then move the Goonies to location II.
Remove an Obstacle
While the Goonies are present at a location, you may use an item to remove an obstacle from that location.
Obstacles are indicated by the items in the upper left when the item card is in the "obstacle" position.
To remove an obstacle, you must play a matching item card (for example, you must use a map item card to remove a map obstacle). Some obstacles have two symbols; to remove those obstacles, you must play two different cards matching the two symbols (see Fig. 2). The required item cards can be contributed by different players. Removing an obstacle (no matter how many item cards are used) counts as a single action.
Example B: The Goonies are currently at location V, which has two obstacles: a map and a map/music note. Mikey plays a map item card as an action to clear the first obstacle. As a second action, Mikey plays another map card and Andy contributes a music note card, thus clearing the second obstacle.
Explore a Location
The Goonies must explore each location to find the hidden treasure while trying not to trigger a trap. The exploration tiles at each location have two traps and one treasure.
A location can only be explored while there are no obstacles present at that location. To explore, you must play an item card. The item card does not need to match the location. Once you have played an item card, reveal the top exploration tile of that location (see Fig. 3).
If you discover the treasure, it must be stored on a previously traced route below the ship (see the Trace a Route section on page 9). Each route can only store one treasure.
Once the treasure at a location has been discovered and stored, the Goonies can no longer explore at that location. Immediately flip the location card (see Fig. 4). The back of the location card shows a threat, which will be active for the rest of the game.
If you discover a treasure but do not have a traced route available to store it, shuffle the treasure back into that location's exploration pile.
Example C: The Goonies are at location I, with no obstacles present. Mikey plays an item card to explore the location. He then reveals the top exploration tile of location I. It's the treasure! He stores the treasure tile on a traced route.
Then, Mikey flips location card I, revealing this threat: "Place the Booby Trap II tile face down at the next location." Location II has already been fully explored, so Mikey places the trap II tile from location I into the exploration pile of location III.
If you discover a trap, you must immediately add obstacles (one or two, as indicated by the trap's text) onto the location, and then escape by moving the Goonies to the location shown on the trap tile. Then, place this tile face down at the bottom of the exploration tile pile.
Example D: The Goonies are currently at location V, with no obstacles present. Andy plays an item card to explore the location. She then reveals the top exploration tile of location V. It's a trap! Add an obstacle onto location V (as indicated on the Booby Trap I tile), and then move the Goonies to location II (as indicated on the trap tile).
Trace a Route
The five routes must be traced so that you can uncover One-Eyed Willy's ship. To trace a route, you must play three item cards that match a route that has not yet been traced (see Fig. 5). This counts as one action.
Each route only needs to be traced once, and can be traced from any location. Once you have traced a route, flip the matching route marker to indicate that the route has been traced.
Example E: The team decides to trace the "doubloon" route. Andy contributes a doubloon item card, Mikey contributes a second doubloon card, and Stef contributes the third required doubloon card. The route has been traced correctly! The doubloon route tile is flipped to indicate that route is "Mapped."
Remove a Fratelli
Fratelli cards drawn as the result of encounters are placed in the encounter area (see page 3).
To remove a Fratelli card from the encounter area, you must play three cards of the same item; this counts as one action. Then, choose any card from the encounter area and remove it from the game.
2. Discard Used Items
Discard all item cards that were played in the action area this turn.
3. Draw New Items
Each player draws new cards from the item deck:
- 3 or 4 players — draw one item card each.
- 2 players — draw two item cards each.
Players have a hand limit at all times and must discard down to the limit whenever they have exceeded it:
- 4 players — limit of three cards.
- 3 players — limit of four cards.
- 2 players — limit of five cards.
4. Escalate
Draw the top item card and place it over the matching location as an obstacle. Then, check the upper right corner of the card for the escalate effect.
If there is an escalate symbol — draw a card from the encounter deck and resolve it immediately. If there is an escalate symbol — draw an item card and place it over the matching location, then resolve the escalate effect of that card, if applicable.
It is possible that several item cards with an escalate symbol can be drawn in a row. Place and resolve each item card fully before drawing another.
Example F: Chunk draws the top card of the item deck. It belongs to location III and has an escalate symbol, so he places the item card at location III and then draws the next item card. The second card belongs to location V and also has an escalate symbol, and Chunk places it at location V and then draws the next item card. The third card shows location III and has an escalate symbol, so Chunk places it at location III and then draws and resolves the top card of the encounter deck.
End of Game
YOU WIN: All players win when all five treasures have been discovered and all five routes have been traced, before the Fratellis catch you or you are defeated by the obstacles.
YOU LOSE: All players lose if any of the following occur:
- A fifth obstacle (item card) is added at any location.
- A fifth Fratelli card is added to the encounter area.
- The encounter deck is empty.
Optional Modes
Alternate Setup
Instead of choosing the locations with the symbol, shuffle the cards for location 1, choose one at random and return the rest to the box. Repeat this step for the other four locations, then place them in a row starting with 1 and ending with 5.
Hard Mode
Remove the two cards marked with a symbol to increase the difficulty.
Epic Mode (very hard)
Remove the two cards marked with a symbol. In addition, shuffle the eight challenge cards and choose one at random, flipping it face up. That challenge card remains in play for the whole game and has a continuous effect that applies to all players.
Solo Mode
The following rule changes apply for solo play:
- During setup, deal five item cards.
- During the Draw New Items phase, draw four item cards.
- The hand limit is eight cards.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Can Andy use a note from another player's hand as any item? A: No, only cards from Andy's own hand can be used that way.
Q: Mikey's special action grants two extra team actions. Who can use them? A: Anyone can use them; Mikey does not need to participate at all.
Q: Do the Goonies' special actions and abilities count as one of the four team actions each turn? A: No.
Q: Are locations "I" and "V" considered adjacent? A: No.
Q: If I use two item cards to overcome an obstacle, does that count as one action or two? A: One action.
Q: Do I have to clear obstacles in the order in which they're stacked? A: No. They can be completed in any order.
Q: The threat text at location I says "Place the Booby Trap II tile face down at the next location." What is the next location? A: The next location is the first exploration pile to the right that does not have a revealed gem.
Q: One of the obstacles I just placed because of the trap has the symbol; do I draw another obstacle? A: No, the symbol is only activated during the Escalate phase.
Q: When does Data's Special Ability take effect if it cannot be used during the team actions phase? A: Data is the only exception. It is the only special ability that can be used during the Escalate phase.
Q: All the item cards have been discarded! What should I do? A: Shuffle the discarded item cards and place them face down to recreate a new draw deck.
