- 25 Gold Nuggets
- 5 Rubies
- 5 Emeralds
- 60 Gravel (20 gray, 20 black, 20 white)
- 5 Cloth bags
Preparing the Game
- Each player takes a cloth bag.
- Fill your own bag with 5 Gold Nuggets, 4 gray Gravel, 4 black Gravel, 4 white Gravel, 1 Ruby, and 1 Emerald. Collectively, all of these are called Stones.
- The youngest player is the start player and will take the first turn (see Gold Digging below). Turns alternate around the table in a clockwise direction until one player has scored 5 Gold Nuggets and won the game (see End of the Game).
Gold Digging
On your turn, put your hand into your cloth bag, without looking, and draw out one piece. Put it on the table in front of you.
If you draw a Gold Nugget you may either:
- draw again like above, or
- end your turn voluntarily and score your Gold Nugget - see Success.
If you draw your first grey Gravel, first black Gravel, or first white Gravel you may either:
- draw again like above, or
- end your turn voluntarily - see Success.
If you draw a second white or gray Gravel, your turn is immediately over. Return all Stones you have drawn this turn to your bag. Your turn is over.
If you draw a second black Gravel, first return all Stones drawn this turn to your bag. Your turn is over. Then all other players draw one Stone out of their bag. If they draw a Gravel, they place it into your bag. Emeralds, Rubies, or Gold drawn are placed back into their own bag.
If you draw a Ruby, your turn changes into a Speed Round for all players:
- All players immediately draw Stones out of their bags as fast as they can (but only one Stone at a time) until one player draws a Gold Nugget and yells "Gold!". That player scores the Gold Nugget and places it on the table in front of them. All players return all other Stones drawn on this turn to their bag. Your turn is over. Play passes to the next player as usual.
- NOTE: The rules for the drawing of two black, gray, or white Gravel or for the drawing of an Emerald (below) are suspended during this Speed Round.
If you draw an Emerald, you must draw 2 Stones out of your bag, one at a time. If your turn ends in a success, you place the Emerald into another player's bag, just like Gravel. Follow all the above rules based on what two Stones you draw, including the potential of triggering a Ruby Speed Round.
Note: You may end your turn at any point (though you must finish drawing both Stones after an Emerald, and you must finish a Ruby Speed Round). You are not required to have drawn Gold Nuggets.
Success
When you decide to end your turn voluntarily, you get to score any Gold Nuggets you drew. Put them on the table in front of you. They are now safe and will never be returned to the bag.
Then, pick up all Gravel you drew and put them into the bag of another player of your choice. Gravel cannot be split among players.
Example: Sarah drew a black Gravel, a grey Gravel, and then a Gold Nugget. She decides to end her turn (Success), scoring the Gold Nugget, and placing the two Gravel into Peter's bag. Her turn is now over.
Example: Sarah drew a Gold Nugget, a black Gravel, a white Gravel, and finally another white Gravel. Since that was her second white Gravel, her turn is over and she returns the three Gravel and the Gold Nugget to her bag. On her previous turn she had successfully drawn another Gold Nugget. That one stays on the table for the remainder of the game!
End of the Game
The game ends as soon as a player has scored 5 Gold Nuggets to win the game.
Variants
When playing with the variants follow the normal rules unless told otherwise.
Panning For Gold
Just want to learn the basics of a press your luck game? Do not add Rubies or Emeralds to the player bags.
Gold Rush
Short for time so you want to speed things up? To win, you only need to score 4 Gold Nuggets.
