Card Types
There are two decks. The Goblin Deck shows a worker on the back of each of its cards and represents the goblin community, the construction of its dungeons, and the events that can happen in them. The cards of the Mine Deck show a pick and a shovel on the back and indicate the finds and enemies met while exploring the depths.
Goblin Deck
The different kinds of card in this deck are easily identified by the icons that represent them:
- Workers (reverse of the Goblin Deck): workers are the heart of the goblin community and are essential for the hard tasks of mining and construction. Workers stay on the table once played, until they are eliminated or you promote them to professionals.
- Professionals: professional goblins have special abilities and will help you improve and protect your dungeon. They are the most important goblins during combat, both during explorations in the mine and during fights between dungeons (raids). Professionals stay on the table once played, until they are eliminated or you fire them. You can consult the special abilities of the professionals on page 9.
- Events (sucesos): event cards are cards of the Goblin Deck that you can play to help your goblin community or to harm your enemies. You can use these cards at any moment of your turn or whenever you are the target of a raid. Events resolve immediately (before any other effect or ability) and, once used, must be discarded to the Goblin Deck discard pile. These cards can be played even while a goblin is using its ability, and they always take priority over goblin abilities when resolving.
- Rooms (aposentos): rooms represent permanent improvements to your dungeon (your cards on the table). When you play one of these cards it stays on the table for the rest of the game or until it is destroyed.
Mine Deck
The different kinds of card in this deck are easily identified by the different icons that represent them:
- Breaches (brechas): breaches let you access neighbouring dungeons to plunder their wealth.
- Monsters: creatures that lie in wait for your goblins and your riches. Each card states which professional can cancel its effects by tiring it. Monsters bearing the scare symbol (susto) can be eliminated from combat by using Scare cards.
- Setbacks (contratiempos): problems or adversities that goblins may encounter during exploration. Each card states which professional can cancel its effects by tiring it.
- Wealth (riqueza): these cards represent the gold found by your workers during exploration. To win this gold you must always tire one worker for each Ingot (lingote) you want to take.
Setup
Shuffle each of the two decks and place them separately, face down, in a place accessible to all players. During play, keep separate face-up discard piles for each of the two decks. When a deck runs out of cards, shuffle its discards and use them again as the deck.
Each player begins the game with 4 cards from the Goblin Deck in hand, without showing them to any other player. Then decide at random who starts the game. When that player has finished their turn, the player seated to their left begins their turn. Play continues in that direction until the end of the game.
How to determine who starts (optional): if you do not feel like looking for a die to decide who starts, here is an easy way to do it. Each player reveals one card from the Mine Deck. If a single player reveals an Ingot, that player starts. If more than one player reveals an Ingot, those players reveal another Mine Deck card, and so on, until only one player reveals an Ingot. That player starts the game. The cards used in this process are shuffled back into the rest of the deck and the game begins normally.
Turn Sequence
During your turn you must play the following phases in the order described below. After this, pass the turn to the player on your left.
The general turn sequence includes these phases:
- Rest
- Provisioning
- Generation (summon, promote and build)
- Mining
- Discard
1. Rest
In the rest phase, all tired goblins return to their normal state, that is, to their upright position.
2. Provisioning
Draw 2 cards from the Goblin Deck without showing them to the other players and place them in your hand.
3. Generation
During the generation phase you may summon, promote and build as many times as you wish, in any order you like, as long as you have cards available to do so.
- Summon: during the generation phase you may create any number of workers. To create a worker, put a card from your hand into play showing the worker side face up. Each of these cards represents a new worker who will stay in your dungeon until it is eliminated or you decide to promote it to a professional. Once a worker card has been played, nobody may look at the back of that card. Remember that you may only have 3 workers in play.
- Promote: to promote a worker to a professional (brown icon), discard one of your workers from the table that is not tired and put a professional card from your hand into play. This represents that worker being trained until it becomes a professional. Remember that you may have a maximum of 3 professionals in play and that you may not have more than one professional of each type. Whenever you are going to put a professional under your control but already have the maximum allowed, you must fire one of the existing ones, discarding it to do so. You may not fire any professional that is tired.
- Build: during the generation phase, tire one worker for each room card (grey icon) you want to put into play from your hand. You may only have one room of each type in play.
Generation example: a player has 1 worker and no professionals on the table. During their generation phase they have 4 cards in hand (a Político, a Taberna, a Muralla and a Susto). First, the player decides to promote a worker to Político. To do so, they discard the untired worker from the table and put the Político card into play. Then they decide to use the Susto and Muralla cards to summon more workers, putting the 2 cards into play with the worker side face up in their play area. Finally, they tire one of the two workers to build the Taberna, putting it into play.
Mining
In this phase your goblins try to win gold by exploring the mine. You must decide whether to carry out an exploration in search of gold during this phase. If you do, follow the explanation given below under "Exploration". It is advisable not to explore in the early rounds of the game, when players have few or no professionals, as they will have little chance of cancelling the effects of monsters or setbacks that appear.
Exploration
If you decide to explore, show (place face up on the table) one card from the Mine Deck for each untired worker you have in play. These revealed cards are called exploration cards.
The exploration cards must be resolved in this order:
- Breaches (lilac icon)
- Monsters (red icon)
- Setbacks (orange icon)
- Wealth (green icon)
First, if at least one Breach (lilac icon) appears among the revealed cards, you must choose between carrying out a raid by playing one of those cards, or playing the rest of the cards (monsters, setbacks and wealth). If you reveal only one card and it turns out to be a breach, you are not obliged to play it. If you choose a Breach card, count as many players as the number shown, in the direction of the arrow, and the indicated player becomes the target of your raid. If there are not enough players to count in that direction, that card cannot be selected during the exploration.
Exploration example with Breaches: player A has 4 untired workers on the table (since they have a Taberna). They decide to explore, showing the 4 corresponding cards. In this case, 2 Breaches, a Pedrusco and an Ogro famélico appear. One of the Breaches indicates "Direction" = right and "Distance" = 3. Counting 3 players to the right, there are only 2 players in that direction without passing through player A again. Therefore this Breach card cannot be used, and it is discarded. The second Breach indicates "Direction" = right and "Distance" = 2. Player A decides to play it to carry out a raid on player C, discarding the rest of the exploration cards.
If you do not use any Breach, you must resolve the remaining cards in the order indicated above (Red, Orange, Green). First, face the monsters in the order you wish. Each time you choose a monster to face, apply its effects or eliminate it by tiring the appropriate professional goblin indicated on the exploration card. It is also possible to use some event card that allows it. When you apply its effects or it is eliminated, the monster is discarded and you continue with the next monster you choose. When no monsters remain, continue with the setbacks using the same system. Finally, seize the wealth by tiring one worker for each Ingot you want to load, placing it in your dungeon, that is, in your play area on the table.
Eliminating goblins and rooms: many cards of the Mine Deck will eliminate goblins or rooms from the game. When this happens, discard the corresponding cards and place them on the Goblin Deck discard pile. When an Institute or a Taberna is destroyed, the maximum number of goblins allowed in the dungeon must be adjusted immediately, starting with rested goblins.
Exploration example: a player has 4 untired workers on the table (since they have a Taberna), an Espartano, a Paleta and a Mercenario. The player decides to explore and therefore reveals 4 Mine Deck cards (one for each rested worker), which turn out to be an Orco Cabreado, an Elfo Bronceado, Temblores and an Ingot. First, the player faces the monsters (red icon), deciding to fight the Orco Cabreado first. They tire their Espartano to eliminate the Orco, discarding that card without applying its negative effects. Second, they face the Elfo Bronceado, but have no Guardaespaldas or Susto in hand to help defeat it, so they apply its effects, eliminating one of their professionals. In this case the player decides that the Espartano is the professional eliminated. The next card applied is the Temblores (orange icon), which eliminates 2 workers. However, the player tires their Paleta to cancel the effects of the card and be able to discard it. Finally, they tire one of their workers to take the Ingot and bring it to their dungeon. The exploration is over.
5. Discard
The discard phase is divided into 4 stages that are carried out in the following order:
- If you have a Político in your dungeon, you may use the "impuestos" (taxes) ability to draw a card at random from the hand of any player who has more Ingots than you.
- If any player has a Mago that does not control any monster through its "invocation" ability, they must search for a new one in the Mine Deck.
- If you have a Criadero and do not have the maximum number of workers on the table, take a card from the Goblin Deck and put it into play as a tired worker.
- Discard down to the maximum number of cards allowed in hand (2, or 4 if you control a Político).
Raids
Sometimes the different goblin dungeons may attack each other to try to steal the ingots of their neighbours. This can happen when Breaches are found during explorations or by means of a Secret Passage (Pasadizo Secreto). These combats between players are called raids.
The general sequence of a raid includes the following phases, which are always played in the same order:
- Tortas (first the monsters from the Magos' "invocation" ability act, then the professionals)
- Pillaje (the effects of the defending player's Muralla are applied, and the workers act)
Tortas
At the start of this phase, the monsters controlled through the "invocation" ability of the Magos act first. First, the monster of the player defending against the raid acts. If the attacking player has the professional who fights it, that professional may be tired to eliminate it from the game. Then the effects of the attacking player's monster are resolved in the same way. If no monsters are controlled through "invocation", move directly to the next part of the tortas phase.
Once the monsters from the Magos' "invocation" ability have been played, the various professionals of both dungeons act and engage in a hard combat. First, the player defending against the raid may use one of their rested professionals against the enemy. To do so, they must tire it and apply the effects shown by the tortas icon (skull). Next, the attacking player uses one of their professionals in the same way against the opposing dungeon. The sequence repeats until all professional goblins have acted, or until both players decide not to use any more rested professionals. When one player decides not to use any more professionals, their opponent may finish using theirs if they wish, after which this phase is over. The order in which a player decides to use their professionals during a combat is important, since it can be decisive for the result.
Pillaje
Once the tortas are over, the pillaje must be resolved. During this phase the attacking player tries to steal gold from the dungeon they are attacking, using their goblin workers. First, the player who carried out the raid tires one worker if the defending player has a Muralla. Then, the defending player must tire as many of their own workers as the attacker has rested workers. For each worker the defender has tired in this way, the attacker must tire one worker in turn. If the attacking player still has one or more rested workers, they must tire one for each Ingot they can steal, placing the stolen gold in their play area.
Raid example: the player carrying out the raid has 4 workers, a Mercenario and an Espartano. The victim of the raid has 2 workers on the table, a Ladrón and a Mercenario, as well as a Muralla. The defending player starts by using one of their professionals. In this case they decide to tire their Mercenario to eliminate the enemy Mercenario. Next, the player who carried out the raid tires their Espartano to eliminate an enemy worker. Again it is the defending player's turn; they tire their Ladrón to steal an Ingot directly from the attacker. The attacker has no more professionals and passes. The defender has no more rested professionals either, so they also pass and the pillaje phase begins.
During the pillaje phase, the attacking player tires one of their 4 workers, since the defender has a Muralla in play. The defender also tires their only worker in order to tire one additional enemy worker. At this point the attacking player has only two rested workers left, which they tire to load 2 Ingots from the defender. In this case the attacker ends the raid with one more Ingot than when they started it.
Raid example using events: a dungeon receives a raid from another player. In the tortas phase, the defending player decides to start by tiring their Mercenario to eliminate the attacker's Ladrón. However, the attacking player uses a Susto to tire the goblin Mercenario. Since events always resolve before goblin abilities, the defending player tires their Mercenario without it having been able to use its ability. However, they may use another of their untired professionals instead.
Special Abilities of the Professionals
Each professional has a special ability that is played as indicated in each case. All special abilities may be used even if the professional is tired.
- Construcción (Paleta): during your provisioning phase, draw 3 cards from the Goblin Deck instead of 2. In addition, it is not necessary to tire workers to build rooms.
- Dinamita (Artificiero): if you are going to carry out an exploration, show 2 cards from the Mine Deck before doing so. If there is at least 1 Ingot, you may load one. Discard the remaining cards. After using this ability, carry out the exploration normally, taking into account the workers that are tired at this moment.
- Francotirador (Mercenario): once per exploration or raid, discard an event card from your hand to eliminate any one monster you face (including monsters controlled by enemy Magos).
- Huida (Ladrón): once during your exploration you may discard an event card from your hand to change your exploration, discarding all the revealed Mine Deck cards and revealing that same number of cards again. You must keep the second result obtained in the exploration.
- Impuestos (Político): during your discard phase, draw a card at random from the hand of a player who has more Ingots than you. In addition, at the end of the discard phase you may keep a maximum of 4 cards in hand instead of 2.
- Inmunidad (Guardaespaldas): you are immune to the negative effects of the following cards: Susto, Abracadabra, Soborno and Expropiación. However, monsters controlled by the Mago or summoned with its tortas (skull) ability will not be immune to Susto if they are scareable.
- Invocación (Mago): when the Mago is put into play, reveal cards from the Mine Deck until you find a monster bearing the scare symbol (asustable). Discard the other cards and place that monster next to the Mago. The monster remains in play until the monster or the Mago is eliminated. If during the discard phase of any player the Mago does not control any monster, reveal cards from the Mine Deck again until a new scareable monster is found and place it under the control of the Mago.
There are 4 possible invocations, and these are their effects during a raid:
-
Araña Cleptómana: the enemy player discards all of their cards.
-
Enano Gorrón: you steal an Ingot from the enemy player to gain it yourself.
-
Elfo Bronceado: the enemy player chooses one of their professionals and eliminates it.
-
Orco Cabreado: the enemy player chooses 2 of their workers and eliminates them.
-
Resistencia (Espartano): whenever you are the target of a raid, tire all your workers to rest them.
Exploration example using special abilities: a player has 3 untired workers on the table, an Artificiero, a Ladrón and a Mercenario. During their mining phase they decide to carry out an exploration. Since they have an Artificiero in their dungeon, they use its "dinamita" ability at the start of the exploration and show 2 cards from the Mine Deck. They turn out to be two Ingots, and the player tires one of their workers to load one Ingot into their dungeon. The other one is discarded. The player then resolves the exploration in the usual way and shows 2 cards from the Mine Deck (one for each rested worker), which turn out to be a Día de Paga and a Derrumbamiento. Since they do not have any of the professionals needed to cancel those cards, they decide to use the special "huida" ability of their Ladrón, discarding a Subidón from their hand. They discard the Día de Paga and the Derrumbamiento and reveal 2 new cards, which turn out to be a Dragón and an Ogro famélico. First they decide to face the Ogro famélico, tiring their Artificiero to discard the card without applying its effects. Since they have no Espartano, they cannot eliminate the Dragón. However, the player has a Susto in hand and, although the Dragón is not a scareable monster (it does not have the Susto icon on its card), they use their Mercenario's "francotirador" ability and discard the Susto from their hand to eliminate the Dragón.
Raid example using special abilities: the player carrying out the raid has 4 workers (they have a Taberna), a Mago that controls an Enano Gorrón through its "invocación" special ability, a Guardaespaldas and a Político. The defender has 3 tired workers, an Espartano, an Artificiero and a Mago that, through its "invocación" ability, controls an Araña Cleptómana.
When the raid begins, the defending player uses the "Resistencia" ability of their Espartano and immediately rests their 3 tired goblin workers.
At the start of the tortas phase, the monsters controlled by the Magos begin to act. First, the defender's Araña Cleptómana acts. Since they have no Mercenario to cancel its effects, the attacking player should discard all cards from their hand. However, they use a Susto from their hand to eliminate it. Next, the attacker's Enano Gorrón acts, stealing an Ingot from the defending player, which passes to the attacking player's dungeon.
Once the monsters have acted, the professionals act. The defending player starts, deciding to use their Artificiero to eliminate the attacker's Taberna. By doing so, the attacking player must immediately eliminate one of their rested workers, since the maximum allowed becomes 3. Next, the attacker plays and decides to use their Político to tire 2 workers of the defending player. The defender plays again and this time decides to tire their Mago, which reveals cards from the Mine Deck until, in this case, an Elfo Bronceado appears. The attacking player immediately faces the monster and decides to tire their Guardaespaldas to eliminate the monster from the game without applying its negative effects. The attacking player acts again, and can only use their Mago, since it is their only rested professional. They tire it and reveal cards from the Mine Deck looking for a monster, and an Elfo Bronceado appears. In this case the defending player decides to eliminate their tired Artificiero. The last professional to act is the defender's Espartano, which tires to eliminate an enemy worker of their choice.
During the pillaje phase, the attacking player has 2 rested workers left (they lost 1 when they lost their Taberna and another was eliminated by the enemy Espartano). The defending player was able to rest their 3 workers with the "resistencia" ability, but the enemy Político tired 2 of them during the tortas phase. Therefore the defending player tires their last rested worker in order to tire one of the attacker's 2 rested workers. The attacker tires the other one to steal another Ingot from the defending player (they had already stolen one with the Enano Gorrón).
Victory Conditions
In Goblins en la mina you win the game if you reach a certain number of Ingots at the end of your turn. This number is as follows:
| Number of players | Ingots needed to win |
|---|---|
| 2 | 8 |
| 3 or 4 | 7 |
| 5 or 6 | 6 |
Team Mode (Pairs)
It is possible to play Goblins en la mina in pairs, sharing the gold accumulated and helping each other with your partner in order to win before the other teams. To do so, simply add or modify the following rules, explained below:
- The number of players must be even. Before setting up the game, agree on the teams or choose them at random. For 4 players there will be 2 teams of 2 players, and for 6 players 3 teams of 2 players will take part.
- Ignore the normal victory conditions. Any team whose two members together have 10 or more Ingots at the end of the turn of one of its members wins the game.
- Events (blue icon) may also be played during the exploration of another player, to affect them or their partner, or to help your own. It is possible to play any event in this way as long as the text of the card allows it.
Example: during an exploration, a player from an opposing team throws a Susto at me and tires my Espartano so that I cannot eliminate a Dragón. However, my table partner immediately throws a Subidón at my Espartano to rest it so that I can play it normally.
- Events (blue icon) may also be played during any raid in which your partner takes part, either to help them or to affect the players of the opposing team, as long as the text of the card allows it.
Example: they carry out a raid on my table partner's dungeon. I have a Cerrado por Vacaciones in hand but cannot play it to help them, since its text says it cancels a raid directed at me. However, I can play an Expropiación to steal a Taberna from the attacker and thus weaken them.
- You may tire a single professional of your own during your partner's exploration to cancel a monster or setback card as if you were the one carrying out that exploration.
Example: during my exploration, someone plays an Orgullo obrero to eliminate my Político so that I cannot eliminate an Enano Gorrón. However, my partner could also play once one of their professionals to help me. Since they also have a Político, they could then eliminate the Enano, but unfortunately another rival player plays a Susto to tire it and prevent their help.
- If a Breach is drawn that targets your partner, you may look at each other's hand cards and distribute them however you like.
Appendix 1: Example Table Layout
The rulebook shows an illustrated example of a table layout, with areas labelled Goblin Deck, Mine Deck, Workers (Currantes), Rooms (Aposentos), Ingots (Lingotes) and Professionals (Profesionales).
Appendix 2: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Q: Can I choose to reveal fewer cards than rested workers during an exploration? A: No, you must always reveal as many cards as you have rested workers.
Q: Can I play a Soborno to steal a professional if I already have the maximum allowed? A: Yes, you may fire one of your rested professionals at any time to bring the new goblin into your dungeon, or discard the stolen goblin.
Q: If I have 4 workers and a Taberna but it is destroyed, must I discard one of my workers? A: Yes, at no time may you have more goblins than allowed. In addition, you must discard a rested one as a priority. If you had none rested, you could discard a tired one.
Q: Can I play an Abracadabra, Orgullo obrero, Soborno or Expropiación during a raid? A: Yes, since it is an event card and does not say otherwise, it may be played during your turn or when carrying out or defending against a raid.
Q: If I am attacked by an Ogro famélico, can I choose to eliminate 2 workers and a professional? A: Yes, you may choose to eliminate any combination of workers and professionals that adds up to 3 in total.
Q: Can I look at which card is hidden under one of my workers or the enemy's workers during the game? A: No, once a worker is put into play that card may not be revealed.
Q: Can I steal Ingots with my workers from a player who attacks my dungeon if I have more rested workers than they do? A: No, workers can only be used to steal gold during a raid by the player carrying out the attack.
Q: Can I play an Abracadabra on one of my workers? A: Yes, as the card indicates. Sometimes it may be convenient to recover a card that we had previously used as a worker.
Q: If I am the target of a raid, can I play a Soborno on a Espartano so that I rest all my workers before starting to resolve the raid? A: No, since the Espartano uses its ability at the very moment you become the target of a raid. Since you cannot use a Soborno unless it is your turn or you are the target of a raid, the Soborno is played after you have been targeted and therefore you would not rest your workers.
Q: If I use the Mago's tortas ability and a Dragón appears, do I gain the Ingot that the other player loses? A: No, the Dragón's card says that the Ingot is lost. If an Enano Gorrón is played instead of the Dragón, that Ingot is gained, since the card says it is stolen and not lost.
