Objective

In Gnomi, when a card is used, it is flipped upside-down in your hand (still facing you). The objective of the game is to be the last player with cards right side up. There are two types of cards: Mushrooms and Gnomes.

Setup

First remove the golden cards, then separately shuffle the Gnome and Mushroom cards. Deal 4 Mushrooms and 3 Gnomes to each player. These become your hand (right side up). The remaining cards won't be needed for the rest of the game. (You may put them in your pocket.)

Your Hand

In Gnomi, your used cards stay in your hand. Flipping them upside down (still facing you) indicates that they have been used. As indicated by the icons on the front and back of each card, the back of your hand is public information. You should keep your cards fanned out so that other players can see the icons. Hand order doesn't matter.

The card icons, as printed on the front and back of each card, are: Mushroom, Composted Mushroom, Gnome, and Sleeping Gnome.

Turns

Each player takes his/her turn in clockwise order. The player who most recently won a game goes last. On their turn, each player make take 1 of 4 possible moves:

  • Use 1 Mushroom
  • Use 2 Mushrooms
  • Use a Gnome
  • Pass

Mushrooms

Mushrooms are the basic unit of the game, and they come in five colors: orange, white, blue, red and purple. There are two basic moves you can do with them:

Use 1 Mushroom: Reveal a mushroom in your hand, then flip it over. Choose one other player. If that player has a right-side-up mushroom of the same color, they must give one of them to you.

Use 2 Mushrooms: Reveal 2 mushrooms in your hand, then flip them over. Choose one other player. Take one of their mushrooms at random.

An upside down Mushroom is in the "Compost."

Pay attention to where Mushrooms end up, so you can steal them!

Gnomes

Gnomes are more powerful than mushrooms. They each have a special ability to help you stay ahead of the other Mushroom farmers. To use a Gnome, reveal it, flip it over, and use its ability.

An upside down Gnome is "Sleeping."

Many Gnomes have the ability to "sprout" mushrooms. This means take a composted (up side down) mushroom and put it back into your hand right side up. You do not need to reveal it.

Passing

If you aren't able to play, or don't want to, you can pass. You must Compost a Mushroom or put a Gnome to Sleep when you pass.

End of the Game

When all of your Gnomes are asleep and all of your Mushrooms are in the compost, you lose the game. The last player with cards right side up wins.

Note: You can't steal from a player who is out of the game.

Golden Expansion

If you have more time, and you are ready for more challenge, you can try the golden expansion that comes with the game.

This expansion is played in a round of 3 games. At the end of each game, the winner is awarded gold points, as seen in the upper right of the golden cards. The printed gold-point icons are "One Gold Point" and "Two Gold Points".

The first game is played as a normal game of Gnomi. The winner of each game may take a golden gnome in secret (worth 2 gold.) The last player eliminated also gets a golden mushroom (worth 1 gold).

Golden cards are kept from one game to the next. At the beginning of game 2 and 3, players draw back up to 3 gnomes and 4 mushrooms (inclusive of the golden cards awarded in the previous game.) Note that golden mushrooms can be stolen.

At the end of game 3, the player with the most gold wins.

Example Panels

The rules include four illustrated examples, with these captions as printed:

  • 1a - Lisa Uses 1 Red Mushroom. She flips over her red mushroom and asks David if he has a red mushroom.
  • 1b - David Gives Her a Mushroom. Because David had a matching mushroom, he has to give Lisa a red mushroom.
  • 2a - David plays a Gnome. David reveals Hans the Destroyer. Using its ability, he names "white". Then he flips over the Gnome and puts the card back in his hand.
  • 2b - Compost White, Poor Paul. Paul has 2 white mushrooms, so he flips them over. Lisa has none, so she does nothing.

Component Note

The individual Gnome ability text (for example, Hans the Destroyer) is printed on the card faces in the separate card print-and-play sheet ("Gnomi PNP Cards V8"), not in this rules sheet.
