Preparation
Mix the cards and form a deck face down. Reveal the top six cards and line them up face up.
Each card shows a hieroglyph in one color. There are six hieroglyphs (eye, bird, vase, boat, hand and snake) and four colors (blue, green, yellow and red).
Players must memorize the symbols and colors (from the top) of the revealed cards and then turn them face down. Define how long the cards will remain open for memorization. We suggest 10 to 20 seconds.
How to Play
The youngest player starts and the game goes clockwise. On your turn, do the following:
- Reveal a card: reveal a card from the deck and place it face up next to the deck. Ignore the symbol shown on the top of the card. The number on the bottom of that card indicates a position in the row of cards on the table (A). Depending on the card, the bottom indicates whether you should remember the symbol (hieroglyph) (B) or the color (C) of the card in the indicated position.
- Announce your answer: say which color or symbol (as requested by the open card) you think is in that position in the row.
- Check your answer: pick up the card in that position and look at it, but do not reveal the card to the other players.
If your answer is correct, reveal the card to everyone and keep it for yourself. Form a pile with the cards you won face down in front of you.
If your answer is incorrect, the next players, clockwise (starting with the next player after you) can also try to answer. If any of the other players gets the answer, reveal the card to everyone and give it to the player who got it right. If no one gets it right, return the card to the game box.
Example: Maria has revealed a card from the deck (1) and must remember the symbol (B) of the card in position 5 (A) in the row of cards on the table (2). Maria announces her answer: a jug! She then picks up the card (3) and, when she sees that it is the correct answer, she keeps the card.
At the end of your turn, fill the empty position in the row with the card you revealed next to the deck. Give the players a few seconds to memorize the card and turn it face down. Now it's the next player's turn.
End of Game
The game ends when the deck is exhausted and it is not possible to replace cards in the row. The player with the most cards is the winner.
Cooperative Play (or Solitaire Play)
You can play Glyphs in Cooperative Mode or in Solitaire Mode. In both modes the aim is to remember as many as possible!
Use the same rules, but in cooperative mode, for each new card revealed (1), the group discusses until they decide on the final answer, announce (2) and check the result (3). If the answer is correct, the group wins the card. If the answer is incorrect, the card is returned to the box.
After playing a few times, try the final challenge: don't make any wrong guesses!
If you choose solitaire mode, use the same rules, except always use the final challenge rules!
