Table of Contents
Components
- 23 Theme cards
- 1 Check card
- 18 Letter cards
- 1 rulebook
- 1 "Paris est ludique !" card (not used in the game!)
Goal of the Game
Win the most Letter cards by making a word be guessed in 5 seconds, using only a theme and a clue.
Setup
- Place the Check card in the middle of the table.
- Draw 6 Theme cards and 3 Letter cards at random and place them in two separate face-down piles on either side of the Check card.
- Put the remaining Theme cards back in the box. They will not be used for this game.
- Keep the remaining Letter cards nearby. They will be used later.
- Choose a number from 1 to 8. For the whole game, you will use the theme with that number on the drawn Theme cards.
- At 4, 6 or 8 players: form teams of 2 players.
- At 5 or 7 players: there are no teams; everyone plays individually.
- At 9 players: form teams of 3 players.
The Game
-
Turn the 1st Theme card face up. The theme of the round is on the line corresponding to the number chosen for the game (between 1 and 8). Throughout the game, for the 6 Theme cards drawn, you will always use the theme of the number chosen at the start of the game. Depending on the group of friends, some themes stimulate your imagination more or less. If a theme does not inspire you, do not hesitate to change it; there are plenty, and the important thing is to have fun!
-
For this theme there will be 3 turns. A turn goes as follows:
- A player turns over the 1st Letter card.
- All players search simultaneously, without saying it, for a WORD:
- STARTING with the drawn letter
- RELATED to the theme of the round
Finding a Word: Game with 4, 6 or 8 Players
-
As soon as a player thinks they have a valid WORD, they look for a CLUE word that will allow them to make their partner guess their WORD. Then they must tap the Check card and announce their CLUE word aloud AT THE SAME TIME. Careful: if the player taps without giving the clue at the same time, they are booed by their fellow players and another player can quickly tap and take over.
-
IMMEDIATELY count down aloud: 5... 4... 3... 2... 1... The partner has 5 seconds, the time of the countdown, to guess the word!
-
At the end of the countdown, and instead of saying "ZERO", THE PLAYER and THEIR PARTNER must simultaneously announce aloud the WORD they are thinking of.
Won or Lost?
Depending on the WORDS spoken by the two partners:
- If the WORDS are identical and valid (see "Words and Clues" below): they win the turn and win the Letter card, which is worth 1 point at the end of the game.
- If the WORDS are different, or identical but invalid, or were not announced simultaneously: they can no longer take part in this turn (this letter). The other teams can try their luck. They have about ten seconds to make a new proposal. After those ten seconds, or if all teams are "out of play" for the turn, the Letter card is removed from the game. Likewise if no team found a WORD for this turn.
Finding a Word: Game with 5 or 7 Players
-
As soon as a player thinks they have a valid WORD, they look for a CLUE word that will allow them to make another player guess their WORD. Then they must tap the Check card and announce their CLUE word aloud AT THE SAME TIME. Careful: if the player taps without announcing the clue at the same time, they are booed by their fellow players and another player can quickly tap and take over.
-
As soon as any other player thinks they have found the WORD, that player also taps the Check card and IMMEDIATELY the two players count down aloud: 5... 4... 3... 2... 1... and instead of saying "ZERO", BOTH PLAYERS must simultaneously announce aloud the WORD they are thinking of.
Won or Lost?
Game with 5 or 7 players, depending on the WORDS spoken by the two players:
- If the WORDS are identical and valid (see "Words and Clues" below): they win the turn. The 1st player wins the Letter card, which is worth 2 points at the end of the game. The 2nd player wins and takes an unused Theme card, which is worth 1 point at the end of the game.
- If the WORDS are different, or identical but invalid, or were not announced simultaneously: the two players can no longer make a proposal this turn, but may try to guess the WORDS proposed by the other players. The other players have about ten seconds to propose a new clue. After those ten seconds, or if all teams are "out of play" for the turn, the Letter card is removed from the game. Likewise if no team found a WORD for this turn.
Words and Clues
For the word to be guessed
IT MUST:
- be a single word, therefore without an added qualifier (forbidden: earthworm, red nose, Tom Cruise...)
- start with the letter of the turn
- be related to the theme of the round
- be an existing word, from the dictionary or a proper noun
IT CAN:
- be a compound word, proper noun, first name, adjective, verb, ...
For the clue given
IT MUST NOT:
- be the word to be guessed (do not laugh, it will happen to you!)
- have the same root as the word to be guessed
- be the translation of the word to be guessed in another language
- be a word already used in THE WHOLE GAME, as CLUE, WORD or proposal, even if it was invalid and refused
IT CAN:
- be a compound word, proper noun, first name, adjective, verb, ...
- start with a letter other than that of the turn and have no link with the theme of the round
If a clue or word does not respect these rules, the points are not awarded. In case of disagreement about the validity of a word or clue, we count on your fair play and advise you to vote by show of hands.
End of the Turn
- When the Letter card has been won or removed from the game (if nobody managed to win it), start a new turn with the same theme for the next 2 Letter cards.
Note: if no player has found a word in a time judged long enough, the Letter card is removed from the game.
- When the 3 Letter cards have been played, draw a new Theme card and 3 new Letter cards for the next round.
End of the Game
The players go through the 6 successive rounds with the 6 Theme cards drawn at the start of the game. The 18 Letter cards have thus all been won or removed from the game.
The team (at 2, 4 or 8) or the player (at 5 or 7) who has won the most points wins the game.
Give Me More! And If You Are 9 Players!
- Teams are made of 3 players.
- When a player finds a WORD, at the end of the countdown, everyone on their team must announce the WORD simultaneously: THEY and THEIR TWO TEAMMATES.
- The other rules for games with an even number of players apply.
Example of a Turn
The theme of the round is "It sinks" ("Ça coule"). The letter of the turn is "T".
At 4, 6 or 8 players:
Dom and Jack count down: 5... 4... 3... 2... 1...
- If they say "TORRENT" in chorus, they win the T card.
- If Dom says "TORRENT" and Jack says "TITANIC", they have made a mistake and can no longer play for this letter.
As there was a mistake, Guillaume can restart the turn and taps the Check card announcing "LONDON", and immediately counts down from 5 to 1... He and Claire, his partner, simultaneously announce "THAMES". They win this turn and win the T Letter card.
At 5 or 7 players:
Dom thinks of "TORRENT", quickly taps the Check card and announces his clue aloud: "FAST". The other players think, then Jim taps the Check card in turn. Immediately, Dom and Jim count down: 5... 4... 3... 2... 1...
- If Dom and Jim say "TORRENT" in chorus, Dom wins the Letter card and Jim wins an unused Theme card.
- If Dom says "TORRENT" and Jim says "TITANIC", they have made a mistake and can no longer make a proposal for this letter. But if Claire gives a clue, they can guess her word.
