Overview
3-4 players, 15 min, ages 8+.
Components
- Gift cards x18
- Nice Gifts (Red) x6
- Quirky Gifts (Blue) x6
- Party Props (Green) x6 (one is also a Quirky Gift)
- Gift token x1
Preparation
- Shuffle all 18 cards and deal them evenly to all players (5 cards for 3 players, 4 cards for 4 players), and place the remaining cards facedown in a row aside.
- Each player checks their cards secretly and places them facedown in ascending order from left to right. Two cards of the same value can be arranged either way you like. The Party Props have no values on them, so you can place them anywhere in your card row (and try to mislead your opponents).
- Slide your cards on the right a bit forward in an escalating format to remind players that these cards have higher values (Low on the left, High on the right).
Note: You can check your own cards anytime, but you can't reveal them to other players.
Note: During the game, whenever you receive a new card, you must always arrange your card row in ascending order from left to right.
Rules
- The player who most recently received a gift is the start player and takes the Gift token. Players take turns to be the active player in clockwise order.
- On your turn, you have to initiate a Gift Swap:
- Choose one of the facedown cards in your card row.
- Choose one of the facedown cards in one of your opponents' card row.
- You two swap the chosen cards facedown, but you can't check the swapped card yet.
- On the count of 3, both of you simultaneously choose one of the two options:
- A. Keep: Check your swapped card secretly, and rearrange it into your card row in ascending order. Note: Where you place the new card is open information to other players.
- B. Open: Flip the swapped card and rearrange it into your card row in ascending order.
- After the swap, pass the Gift token to the left. The player on the left takes their turn.
Special condition: If, after two rounds, there are still no cards being flipped, then, starting from the start player, each player chooses one of their cards and flips it (and activates the card effect if desired).
Game End
- At the end of a player's turn, if any player's cards are all flipped faceup, the game ends immediately.
- All players flip all their cards faceup and score their points. The player with the most points wins! If tied, they share the victory.
Scoring
Each red gift box icon scores 1 point. Each blue gift box icon scores -1 point. 1/2/3/4 Party Props cards score 0/3/6/12 points.
King of Quirky Gifts: If you have 3 or more Quirky Gift cards (including the card that was converted from a Nice Gift to a Quirky Gift), all of your Quirky Gift cards become positive points.
Gift Card Effects
Immediate effect
You may activate its effect immediately after the card was flipped faceup. If the card was flipped during scoring, the effect is ignored.
- You may swap this gift with any facedown gift (including the cards that were set aside). After swapping, you have to decide whether to Keep it or Open it (and activate the effect, if desired).
- You may turn any one faceup card facedown. The facedown card can be used for swapping again.
- You may swap this gift with any faceup card (including the cards that were set aside). The effect of the swapped card won't be activated though.
Note: If both players choose to open their Gifts and both cards have immediate effects, the active player takes the priority. If the active player turns the non-active player's card facedown or swaps it away, then the latter's effect is forfeited.
Scoring effect
Polaroid: During scoring, you must convert one Quirky Gift into a Nice Gift, which becomes positive points.
Neon Ball: During scoring, you must convert one Nice Gift into a Quirky Gift, which becomes negative points.
Note: The above effects will change the number of Quirky Gift cards you have, therefore, they might affect your qualification for the King of Quirky Gifts.
Note: If you have both Polaroid and Neon Ball, you must apply their effects on different Gift cards.
Scoring example
The cards: Neon Ball, Polaroid, a third Party Props card, Blue 3, Red 5. Three Party Props cards score 6 (x3: 6). The Blue 3 is converted by the Polaroid to red: -2 becomes +2. The Red 5 is converted by the Neon Ball to blue: +3 becomes -3. Total: 6+2-3=5.
The Neon Ball turned your Red 5 into blue and became -3 points. You could have had a chance to become the King of Quirky Gifts by having 3 blue cards. Unfortunately, the Polaroid turned your Blue 3 into red (+2 points), therefore, you ended up with only 2 blue cards.
