Components

  • This Rulebook
  • 160 Movie Title Cards
  • 70 Studio Demand Cards
  • 8 "Free Words" Reference Cards
  • 1 Timer

Game Setup

  1. Take the Movie Title cards and shuffle them into a single stack. Deal 5 cards to each player then place the stack in the center of the table so that all players can easily reach it.
  2. Take the Studio Demand cards and shuffle them facedown into a single stack. Place the stack in the center of the table so that all players can easily reach it.
  3. Give each player a Reference card showing the "free words" that players can insert into their title as they see fit.
  4. The player who has most recently seen a movie in the theater is the first Producer. The Producer takes the timer. All other players are Writers for the first round. The game is ready to begin!

Playing the Game

In each round, the Producer is looking for a certain type of film for the studio. Writers create titles by flipping and rotating the Movie Title cards in their hands to create entertaining titles that are presented one at a time to the Producer. The following section explains the steps in each game round:

  1. Brainstorming – Writers bring their hands up to 7 cards.
  2. Demands of the Studio – Producer flips over the top card of the Studio Demand Deck.
  3. Deadline – Producer calls "Action!" and flips the timer.
  4. Title Creation – Writers create their movie titles.
  5. The Pitch – Writers show and read their titles out loud.
  6. Film Production – Producer picks their favorite and that winner scores a point.
  7. Next Round – Pass the timer clockwise to the next player. This player is now the Producer for the next round.

If at the end Step 6, a player has scored 5 points (has had five films produced) the game ends and that player is the winner. Otherwise, complete Step 7 and repeat the steps until a winner is declared.

Note: 5 points is recommended to keep the game within a reasonable time. However, feel free to play to fewer points for a shorter game or more points for a longer one.

Brainstorming

During this step, all Writers take turns drawing Movie Title cards to bring their hands up to 7 cards beginning with the Writer on the left of the Producer and proceeding clockwise.

Tip: The Writer should immediately look at the word choices on both sides of the cards in order to begin creating potential word combinations.

Demands of the Studio

The Producer draws a Studio Demand card from the center of the table and reads it aloud. The card is then placed face up in the center of the table for all Writers to see. All Writers can examine this card at any time.

Deadline

Once the card is placed face up, the Producer counts to three and calls "Action!" and flips the timer. The Writers now have two minutes to create their titles.

Title Creation

While the timer is still running, Writers twist and flip their Movie Title cards to try and create a movie title that they think the Producer will pick. Each of the Writers must follow these rules:

  • The movie title must be made of at least one Movie Title card.
  • Movie titles can contain any number of "free words" from the Reference card that each Writer has.
  • The Writer can use different forms of the words on the Movie Title cards. For instance, if the word "Attack" is on the card, the Writer can choose to use the word "Attacker" or "Attacking" or "Attacked" instead.
  • You may only use one word per card, but can use as many cards from your hand as you like. The cards should be placed in an overlapping column so it is clear what title is going to be used.

The Pitch

When the timer has run out, the Producer yells "Cut!" and the Writers must set down all their cards. Beginning with the Writer to the left of the Producer, each Writer in turn reads out the title of the movie they want to create.

The rulebook illustrates this with cards laid down in an overlapping column, captioned: "Lay down cards like this when presenting the title. This would be 'The Burrito Experiment'."

Film Production

After hearing the prospective movie titles, the Producer selects their favorite. That Writer receives the Studio Demand card face down as a point. If this player now has 5 points, he or she is declared the winner!

If nobody has won, discard all Movie Title cards used this round, discard any unused Movie title cards you do not like from your hand, pass the timer clockwise to the next player who now becomes the next Producer, and proceed back to step one.

If at any time you run out of Movie Title cards, just reshuffle the discard pile and place the new stack in the center of the table.

End of the Game

The game ends when any player earns five points.
