Purpose of the Game
In Garden Guerrilla every player rules a commando of 10 insects, represented by cards. The goal of the game is to catch the other insects and goodies to score points, using your insects' attacks. The game ends when the last card is played. The player with the highest score wins the game.
Game Set-Up
Create the board according to the number of players:
| Players | Mushrooms | Bushes | Toads | Ants | Goodies |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 2 players | 1 | 1 | 1 | 2 | 1 |
| 3 players | 1 | 2 | 1 | 3 | 1 |
| 4 players | 2 | 2 | 2 | 4 | 2 |
Place at random the Garden Elements on the table. Place 1 Goodies card on top of every Mushroom (a Garden Element). Place at random the Natural Enemy cards.
Every player chooses a colour and takes the corresponding deck. Then every player shuffles their deck and draws 5 cards; the remaining 5 cards are placed face-down and will be used in the second round of the game.
Note: for extra fun, try to play the game while standing 50 cm from the table.
Insect Cards
In the game there are 40 Insect cards: 10 for each of the 4 different team colours. Each Insect card has its Attack shown on the bottom (an Attack is how the insect can catch other cards). The front of the card shows the insect, the placement type (throw, drop...), the team colour, the card attack and the crosshair.
How to Play
Garden Guerrilla lasts 2 rounds. Each round is divided into turns. The player who has been last in a garden will play first.
During their turn, a player must choose one card from their hand and play it. When a card is put into play it generates an Attack and it can catch enemy cards. Cards that are caught are placed aside and are considered part of that player's "Bounty".
Then the turn passes to the next player and so on until all players have played their 5 cards. Every player then draws the remaining 5 cards from their deck and the second round starts. At the end of the second round, every player counts their points in the Bounty. The player with the highest score wins!
Play an Insect Card
Each Insect card must be played according to the "Placement type" icon shown on the card. There are 3 different types:
- Spinning Throw: Throw the card by spinning it. The throw must start outside the perimeter of the table and perform at least a 360° spin.
- Vertical Drop: Drop the card on the table holding the arm perpendicular to your body.
- Secure Placement: Put the card on the table as you like, but you cannot move other cards.
If an Insect card falls (i.e. enters play) face-down, it will have no effects and the card will remain in play face-down (it can still be caught by other players).
If an Insect card falls off from the table, its owner must put it in his "Bounty". This is a penalty: having cards of your colour in your Bounty gives negative points at the end of the game.
Resolve the Card Attack
After playing the card, the current player must resolve the Attack. If a player's attack hits other Insect or Natural Enemy cards, these are claimed by the player and placed in their bounty. Effects generated by an Insect card cannot affect insects of the same colour (there is no "friendly fire", so to speak); this rule applies also to explosions. The effects of multiple overlapping cards are always resolved starting from the card that is "closer" to the table (insects already on the table have priority over incoming insects).
The cards can interact with the board in several ways. For details, see the relative section in the reminder sheet.
End of the Game
When the last card has been played every player counts their victory points:
- Insect card of other colours: +1 VP
- Insect card of your colour: -1 VP
- Ants: +1 VP
- Toads: +2 VP
- Goodies: +3 VP
- Controlling a Mushroom (the player with the most face-up Insects on the Mushroom hat): +1 VP per Mushroom
The player with the highest total is the winner. In case of a tie, the player with the most Goodies cards wins. If it is still tied, the players share the victory.
Insect Cards Effects
- LADYGUN: Draw perpendicular lines from the crosshairs on this card. Hit the first enemy card reached by each line. Garden Elements stop this effect.
- SNAILPER: Draw a perpendicular line from the crosshair on this card. Hit the first card reached by the line. Garden Elements stop this effect.
- FIREFLY: Place the explosion card in close contact with all sides (same orientation). All the enemy cards that are covered by the explosion card are hit.
- GRASSHOPPER SAN: Hit all the enemy cards touched by this card. Hit all the enemy cards which will touch this card during the rest of the game.
- CHEMIC: Hit one enemy card covered by this card and any other enemy card that is connected to it.
- LASERFLY: Draw a perpendicular line from the crosshair on this card. Hit all the enemy cards covered by this line. Garden Elements will not stop this effect.
- RAMBEE: 1st effect: draw perpendicular lines from the crosshairs on this card. Hit the first card reached by each line. Garden Elements stop this effect. 2nd effect: Hit all the enemy cards which will touch Rambee during the rest of the game.
- SCRABBLEZOOKA: Draw a perpendicular line from the crosshair on this card. Place the explosion card in one point of your choice centered on this line. All the enemy cards that are covered by the explosion card are hit.
- SKORPIO: Hit one enemy card covered by this card.
- SPIDERCHUTE: Hit all the enemy cards covered by this card.
Garden Elements
Garden Elements interact with Insects and their attacks and they can be used as protection or to gain strategic advantages over enemy teams. For each Mushroom, whoever placed more Insects on top of it at the end of the game gains 1 Victory Point.
- Mushrooms: Attacks from insects that landed on top of a Mushroom affect the board below; on the other hand, Insects on the board can't shoot Insects on top of the Mushroom. The Mushroom blocks all line of sight (and so shots); the Laserfly ignores this rule.
- Bushes: The bush blocks all line of sight (and so shots); the Laserfly ignores this rule.
Other Game Elements
- Ants: This card can be claimed as an enemy card following normal rules.
- Toads: Toads can be claimed only with ranged attacks following normal rules. If an insect card touches a Toad it is considered "eaten by the Toad" and is put into the player Bounty, causing a penalty at the end of the game.
- Goodies: If two or more cards of the same player cover this card, that player claims it. Attacks have no effects on this card.
- Explosion: This card is used to resolve explosion effects.
Game Reminders
- If it is not possible to determine which card is hit by a group effect of several cards (for example: cards overlapping, an effect hits the intersection of two cards, etc.) they are all considered hit.
- Insects already on the board have priority over insects that are coming into play.
- If an Insect card falls face-down, it will have no effects and the card will remain in play face-down (it can still be caught by other players).
- If an Insect card falls off from the table, its owner must put it in their "Bounty". This is a penalty: having cards of your colour in your Bounty gives negative points at the end of the game.
