Set-up
Organize yourselves into teams of two players. (Gnomes hate organisation so do this by shouting, fighting and sulking)
Give each player a full set of 9 Teamwork cards.
Shuffle and deal each player one Secret Research card (for 6 players add the yellow cards marked [6]).
Shuffle the Research cards and place face down as a deck (for 6 players add cards marked [6]).
Goal
To have the highest research result at the end of the game.
Play
Each round draw new Research cards from the deck and place them face up.
Each player chooses an unplayed Teamwork card and plays it face down.
All players turn their Teamwork cards over simultaneously and compare.
Within each team the player who played the highest card becomes the Leader of the team this round, and the player who played the lowest card is the Assistant.
Add the card numbers of teammates together to create each team's Team Total.
If both players in a team chose the same Teamwork number they do not form a team and neither earn any Research cards this round.
Depending on the number of players and Teamwork cards played, Research cards are chosen in order and kept as either Individual cards held personally or Shared cards placed between players and scored equally by both teammates.
New Research cards are drawn for a new round.
Card Secrecy
Research cards are kept face up throughout the game.
The Secret Research cards are kept hidden until the end.
Teamwork cards can only be played once per game and are kept face up once played.
Players may communicate any way they wish but may never show the card they are about to play.
End of Game and Scoring
The game is over when all the Research cards have been drawn.
Players add up the total number of cards of each colour across all of their Research cards, counting equally their Secret card, their Individual cards and any Shared cards.
A player can choose what colour to count a multicolour Research card.
White Research cards with broken GNA score 0.
For each colour score the square of how many cards the player has of that colour.
A collection of all six different cards scores a bonus of 10.
Add the colour scores together to get a player's total research result.
The highest total research result is the winner. A tie is decided in favour of the player with the highest remaining Teamwork card. In the event of yet another tie a fight breaks out and no one wins.
| # of cards of a colour | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | 6 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Score for that colour | 1 | 4 | 9 | 16 | 25 | 36 |
4 Players
Draw 3 new Research cards each round.
Order of Choosing Research Cards
1st: the Leader of the team with the highest Team Total chooses one of the Research cards and keeps it as his Individual card. Only he will score that card.
2nd: the Assistant of the team with the lowest Team Total chooses one of the Research cards and places it between him and his teammate as a Team card. Both he and his teammate will score that card.
3rd: the Assistant of the team with the highest Team Total takes a card and keeps it as his Individual card. Only he will score that card.
Resolving Ties
If both teams have the same Team Total, a fight begins, neither team gains anything, the Research cards are discarded and a new round begins.
Session Play (4 Players Only)
Play 3 times, each time with a different partner. The winner is the player with the highest cumulative score.
6 Players
Draw 4 new Research cards each round.
Order of Choosing Research Cards
1st: the Leader of the team with the highest Team Total chooses one of the Research cards and keeps it as an Individual card. Only he will score that card.
2nd: the Assistant of the team with the lowest Team Total chooses one of the Research cards and places it between him and his teammate as a Shared card. Both he and his teammate will score that card.
3rd: the Assistant of the team with the highest Team Total chooses one of the Research cards and keeps it as his Individual card. Only he will score that card.
4th: the team with the middle Team Total takes the remaining card and places it between themselves as a Shared card. Both teammates will score that card.
Resolving Ties
2 Teams Tie. If two teams have the same Team Total they start arguing while the remaining team gets the best Research choices. First the Leader of the remaining team chooses one of the Research cards as an Individual card. Second the Assistant of the remaining team chooses one of the Research cards as an Individual card. Lastly the two remaining Research cards are randomly dealt to each team that tied as Shared cards.
3 Teams Tie. If all three teams have the same Team Total a huge fight breaks out, no one gets anything, the Research cards are discarded and a new round begins.
3 Player Variant (No Teams)
No Teams and no Secret Research cards.
Draw 2 new Research cards each round.
Order of Choosing the Research Cards
1st: the player with the highest Teamwork card chooses one of the Research cards and keeps it as an Individual card.
2nd: the player with the lowest Teamwork card takes the remaining card and places it between himself and either other player at his own choice, as a Shared card.
Resolving Ties
If two players play the same Teamwork card, they argue and each get nothing. The remaining player chooses one of the Research cards and keeps it as an Individual card.
If all three players play the same card a huge fight breaks out, no one gets anything, the Research cards are discarded and a new round begins.
