Setup

  • Shuffle the 60 fungi cards and deal 6 cards to each player, facedown. These cards are not to be revealed to other players.
  • Place the remaining cards in a facedown stack where everyone can reach them. This is your main fungi stack.
  • Place the foraging point tokens next to the deck of cards.

The Game Setup Reference on the field guide shows a 2-player example: the main fungi stack, the foraging point tokens (2, 3 and 4 PTS), the discard pile with the cluster indicator, each player's hand, the cards played for the round, and each player's foraged card collection.

Game Play

Play starts with the last player who ate a mushroom. Players look at their hands but do not reveal their cards.

The starting player chooses 1 card from their hand and puts it faceup on the table. That card is the lead color for this round. The player to the left must play a card matching that color. If they do not have a card matching that color, they must play any card from their hand.

Ending a Round

After each player has played 1 card, the card with the highest value of the lead color wins the round. The winner has the first opportunity to "forage" any 1 of the cards played that round. They place the card on the table next to them as the start of their foraged card collection. The second highest player chooses next, and so on, until each player has chosen a card.

At the end of each round, each player takes 1 card from the main stack to replenish their hand. Players should always start a round with 6 cards in their hand.

  • The winner of a round is always the first to start the next round. Play continues to the left again.

Note: A player who has played a card that does not match the lead color cannot win the round but can still choose a card after everyone else. If more than one player has played a card that doesn't match the lead color, the one that played the higher value chooses next. If there is a tie for the highest value, the player that played their card first chooses next.

Fungi Card Guide

Some fungi cards have special attributes indicated at the bottom of the cards. These special cards include cluster cards, action cards, and wild magic fun-gi cards.

Note: Be sure to forage your fungi wisely, as some can be toxic and played against other foragers!

Cluster Cards

These cards are needed to start gathering clusters and earning foraging points. The card will indicate whether you need 2, 3, or 4 fungi cards and of which background colors (red, blue, yellow and green fungi). You may only gather clusters together from your foraged cards.

  • If you have the required fungi to complete a cluster you may score this only when it's your turn to forage. Take the cluster card and all the fungi cards to complete the cluster and place them in the discard pile. Then take a foraging point token equal to the point value shown on the cluster card.

Note: Cluster cards can also be used as fungi for other clusters.

Action Cards

These cards will show one of three actions that can be carried out: steal, swap, or protect.

Steal

If you forage a steal card, you may steal 1 card from another player's foraged card collection. This includes any cards that have been foraged in the active round. Add both the steal card and the stolen card to your foraged cards. When you choose a steal card, if you want to steal, you can only do this at the time this card is foraged and not after.

Swap

Swap this card for any of the cards foraged by another player. This can include a card that has just been swapped by another player in that round and can include a swap card itself. When you choose a swap card, if you want to swap, you can only do this at the time this card is foraged and not after.

Tip: This card along with the steal card can help you find fungi to complete your cluster.

Protect

Place this card on top of any 1 foraged cards. That card is now protected and cannot be stolen, swapped, or moved to protect another card. When you choose a protect card, you can only do this at the time this card is foraged and not after.

  • If the protect card is stolen or swapped, it cannot then be used to protect another card, including one belonging to its new owner.
  • If you use the card that is being protected to complete a cluster, the protect card cannot then be used to protect another card.
  • A protect card can be used to complete a cluster at any time, just like any other card.

Magic Fun-gi Wild Cards

These powerful cards are multicolored and can count as any colored fungi when played or used to make clusters. If played as the lead card in a round, the next player can follow with any color fungi card. With this card a player can follow and beat the lead card of any color. If more than one magic fun-gi card is played in a round, the highest value card wins the round.

Ending the Game

The game ends when a player collects 10 foraging points and is crowned champignon! If the deck of cards runs out before this, re-shuffle the discard pile and create a fungi stack and continue the game.

Happy foraging!
