The Adventure Begins
These are dark times, where goblin-kind roam the forest, giants steal livestock, and barbarians raid villages. There are whispers in the night of hidden treasure, a magical artifact, and the return of the Dark One. Like your ancestors, it's in your blood to be a hero of renown. Heroes need a quest. And so, you set out on an adventure for fortune, fame, and glory.
Setup
Remove the three End Game Bosses (The Guarded Artifact, The Treasure Hoard, and The Dark One) from the deck. The deck is then shuffled and laid out face-down in 10 columns, as shown below. The first column has only 1 card, the second column 2 cards, the third column 3 cards, the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh columns have 4 cards each, the eighth column 3 cards, the ninth column 2 cards, the last column has 1 card.
The printed setup diagram shows the 10 columns of face-down cards, with red arrows marking the movement directions allowed between cards (see Game Play).
Other Items Needed
- 1 D6 for your attack
- 1 D6 for Monster attack (different color recommended)
- 8 markers for Character Card (2 to track Gold)
Optional Items
- Movement Marker (on your current location)
- 1 D6 to track NPC companion and their health
- 1 D12 to track Monster health during Combat
Starting Attributes
Your Character's starting attributes are as follows: Health-10, Attack-3, Gold-10, Food-5, Potions-0, Fate-2. Health, Attack, Food, and Fate never go over the Character Card limit.
The printed attribute icons are: Health, Attack, Gold, Food, Fate, Potions, Rounds, and Boss.
Game Play
Start by flipping the first far-left card over and follow its instructions. After completing the scenario, you move forward (towards the right side) one card. You may move directly forward, diagonally forward, or straight up or down (as shown in red on the diagram above). Some card scenarios force you to move backward. If you are forced to move back, move in the direction from which you came. Also, some cards move you forward. If a card moves you forward more than one card, only flip over the card to which you are moved.
You play from left to right 3 times. After each play-through, shuffle the cards and lay them out again. Use the Rounds marker on the Character Card to track each round as you go.
Combat
Combat is solved by rolling two D6: one for you (add your attack bonus), and one for your rival (add its attack bonus). If your result equals or is higher than your rival's result, you win the fight, and your rival's Health is reduced by 1 (you can keep track of this with an extra D12 on the rival's card, set to its starting Health). If your result is lower, then your Health is reduced by 1. Combat continues in rounds like this until you or your rival(s) are defeated. When you encounter more than one rival by yourself, you automatically take an undefendable wound each combat round.
Food
Every time you finish playing through 4 cards, you must eat 1 Food. If you have no food, you lose 1 Health. If food is requested in a card scenario and you have no food, pay 5 Gold, or you might need to fight. You may not carry more than 10 units of food.
Fate
You may spend 1 Fate point to alter any 1 roll, either up or down by 2. If you are lucky, the Sage or the Bard can help restore used Fate. In addition, you will gain 1 Fate after defeating each End Game Boss.
Followers
Some of the scenarios result in befriending a Non-Player Character (Barbarians, Wizard, Warrior). If an NPC joins you on your journey, he or she will fight with you against any rivals you encounter on the next 3 cards, or until death. Take the NPC's card and put it near your Character Card. During combat, make separate dice rolls for your follower and any rival it's fighting. At the end of the third card's scenario, place the NPC's card back in the spot from which it was taken.
End Game
The End Game Boss cards each contain one of three final scenarios. After playing three times through, shuffle the Boss cards and randomly choose one. Read the card's description and follow its instructions.
Campaign
At the bottom of each End Game Card is a reward. Fortune gives you 100 Gold; Fame allows a befriended Wizard or Warrior (found on map cards) to follow you up to 6 cards (instead of 3); and Glory gives you a +3 weapon (this means your Attack modifier will never fall below 3). In addition, they each give you +1 Fate. You may choose to continue as a campaign by removing each defeated End Game Boss from the game and using the rewards earned for the rest of the campaign. Play through the game until you have beaten all three!
