New Cards
The new cards in the Danger Pack 1 Supplement are designed to be shuffled right into the existing Fortune and Glory card decks, and will give your Heroes new Dangers to face and new Cliffhangers to overcome. But beware, as many of these new Dangers have an extra twist in the form of Deadly Tests (a preview game mechanic from an upcoming expansion). The set also introduces the Expedition Truck to the Common Items, giving every Hero the opportunity to head up an expedition into the wild!
New Game Mechanic - Deadly Tests
Many of the new Dangers in this game supplement include a new type of Test for the Heroes to overcome: Deadly Tests. Deadly Tests are indicated by having glowing red success icons instead of the normal silver icons.
Example from the insert: a green Test (label [illegible]) with a target of 4+, followed by three red Deadly success icons (printed as XXX).
Deadly Tests are slightly different than normal Tests in two ways:
- When making a Deadly Test, a Hero is not allowed to re-roll the dice again if they got at least one success. In other words, the Hero must get all of the successes needed in one roll.
- However, Heroes are allowed to Double-Exert (take 2 wounds on themselves) to roll an extra die during any Deadly Test. This may be done multiple times (as long as you have the wounds for it).
The option for Double-Exerting to roll extra dice allows Heroes to make the tough decision of if it is better to take a lot of wounds to try and pass a difficult Deadly Test, or simply let it go to Cliffhanger. And if they do Double-Exert to pass the Test, is it better to Camp Down and Heal your wounds, or is it still worth pushing on to try and get to the Artifact faster?
It is important to note that a Hero may not Exert normally on a Deadly Test, only Double-Exert (even if it is during a Cliffhanger or with an ability like Alexander Cartwright's Experience).
Advanced Rule Note
Note: This new Deadly Test mechanic is an Advanced Rule for the game and a preview of an upcoming expansion. Players that would prefer to keep things simple can treat Deadly Tests just like normal Tests in every way (if all players agree ahead of time). They would just be normal Tests that are worth a bit more Glory than average.
