Goal of the Game
Fluffy Valley is a cooperative game, which means that all players work together. Gather in the burrow the resources needed for winter, and do it before the end of the 9th round.
Setup
Note: In a one-player game, setup and rules remain the same.
- Place the prairie board in the open box, matching the holes in the board with those in the plastic insert. Then place the burrow board and the seasons board as shown in the setup illustration.
- Shuffle the beaver cards and place them face down (picture side down) next to the beaver space on the prairie board.
- Shuffle the danger cards and place them face down (picture side down) on the danger space on the seasons board.
- Move the arrow on the seasons board to the green summer zone.
- Place the hay, hedgehog and weasel tokens near the board, as shown in the illustration.
- Put the bush tokens into the green bag, and the tunnel tokens into the black bag.
- Place the 4 prairie dog figures (heads up) on the prairie board on the spaces: snake, hedgehog, burrow, and on one of the bush spaces.
- Prepare the burrow board by placing hedgehog and hay tokens according to the chosen difficulty level:
- Easy: place 1 honey, 2 hay, 4 berries
- Normal: place 1 honey, 1 hay, 2 berries
- Hard: do not place any tokens
The last person who ate berries (or the youngest participant) becomes the first player.
Gameplay
The game lasts 9 rounds, in which players take their turns one after another (clockwise). A round ends when all prairie dogs have been turned over.
Turn
During your turn, take one of the visible prairie dogs, turn it upside down and move it to another free hole on the board. Perform the action of that space.
If a player has a prairie dog in front of them on their turn, they must use it. Otherwise they must move one of the visible prairie dogs on the prairie board.
Note: You can never move a turned-over prairie dog (when only its paws are visible)!
When a player moves a prairie dog, they place it head down on a free space on the prairie board. A prairie dog may never remain on the same space. Then the player applies the effect of that space:
Bush (x2)
Draw a bush token from the green bag and place it on the harvest table. If it is a ripe berry, you may store it later on the burrow board. If it is a rotten berry, you can exchange it for another resource when you visit the Hedgehog's Shop.
Burrow
Choose 1 type of resource on the harvest table (honey, berry or hay) and slide all tokens of the chosen type into the slot on the prairie board. When they fall out onto the burrow board, place them on their corresponding spaces (if there are still free spaces). If all spaces on the burrow board are already filled, then all players win! Additional tokens have no effect on the win.
Note: You cannot store rotten berries in the burrow.
Handy Beaver
You may spend a hay token from the harvest table to draw a beaver card and place it face up next to the burrow board. From now on, all players can use this upgrade until the end of the game (beaver cards are described on page 7).
Hedgehog's Shop
Exchange your rotten berries from the harvest table for one of the hedgehog tokens. For 1 rotten berry you receive 1 ripe berry; for 2 rotten berries, 1 hay; for 3 rotten berries, 1 honey.
Slowpoke Snake (Żmijka Długowijka)
Remove a weasel token from the prairie board.
Field
Take a hay token and place it on the harvest table.
River
Perform the action of another space occupied by a prairie dog that is turned upside down.
Tunnel
Draw a tunnel token from the black bag and apply its effect (tunnel tokens are described on page 7).
Example
Monika moves a prairie dog to the hay space, which lets her place a hay token on the harvest table. Next, Krzyś visits the Handy Beaver and spends the hay Monika collected to draw a beaver card (it is the start of the game, so it is very useful!). On her turn, Michał goes to the river to perform Monika's action again (the hay action). He adds a new hay token to the harvest table. Finally, Asia goes to the bush space to draw a berry token. It turned out to be a ripe one!
When all prairie dogs on the prairie board are turned over, preparation for a new round begins (see below).
Preparing a New Round
At the start of a new round (other than the first), follow these 3 steps in the following order:
- Turn all prairie dogs on the prairie board over so that their heads are visible, but leave them in the same holes. If any prairie dogs are on the seasons board, hand them out one by one to each participant, starting with the person to the left of the player who last moved a prairie dog in the previous round.
- Draw a danger card and apply its effect:
- Fox: The Cunning Fox stole the resources before they were hidden in the burrow! Put all tokens that are on the harvest table into the black bag. Note: Resources in the burrow are forever protected from the fox. Only resources on the harvest table can be stolen by the fox.
- Badger: Take 1 ripe berry stored in the burrow and put it in the black bag. What a nasty badger!
- Eagle: Oh no! An eagle has carried off one prairie dog, who will now have to come back on foot... Take any prairie dog from the prairie board and place it on the hay pile space on the seasons board. The prairie dog cannot be used in this round.
- Weasel: Oops! A weasel has curled up to sleep on the indicated space – you can no longer use it. Place a weasel token on that space. If a prairie dog is on that space, move it to the hay pile on the seasons board. It cannot be used in this round.
- Move the arrow on the seasons board 1 space to the right. If you reach the red winter zone, the game ends after the round you are currently preparing to play is finished. Now it is time for the next player (the one to the left of the last player of the previous round) to use a prairie dog.
End of the Game
The game ends when one of the following events occurs:
If the players managed to store in the burrow all the resources needed for winter – well done. You all win. (The burrow is full. Congratulations! You are ready for winter: big, soft hay beds await you, and every prairie dog has something tasty to nibble on!)
If the arrow on the seasons board points to the red winter zone – finish the round you are currently preparing to play, and then count the resources together to check your result (table below).
| You have | Result |
|---|---|
| 16 to 17 resources | You were so close to perfect preparation for winter... But there is no need to panic! You planned the harvest well enough to survive this time in peace. |
| 13 to 15 resources | Winter came sooner than you expected, and you had to quickly restock. Fortunately, there will be enough of everything anyway! |
| 10 to 12 resources | You carefully counted the days and divided the harvest so as to survive the winter. Maybe you won't eat dessert every day, but you will manage. |
| Fewer than 10 resources | Winter is hard, but you will cope! Bellies will not be full, but the most important thing is that you stick together! Just hold on until spring! |
Cards and Tokens
Beaver Upgrades
- Bush: Draw 2 tokens (instead of 1) when performing the "Bush" action.
- Burrow: Store 2 types of resources (instead of 1) when performing the "Burrow" action.
- Snake: Remove all weasel tokens from the prairie board when performing the "Slowpoke Snake" action.
- Beaver: You may pay the beaver with any resource from the harvest table when performing the "Beaver" action.
- Tunnel: Draw 2 tokens (instead of 1) when performing the "Tunnel" action.
- Field: Draw 1 additional bush token along with the hay token when performing the "Field" action.
- Hedgehog: Spend 1 fewer rotten berry when trading with the hedgehog. Ripe berries are then free.
- River: In the "River" action you may additionally choose 1 (and only 1) token from the harvest table and store it in the burrow.
Tunnel Tokens
- Resource: Place the token on the harvest table.
- Eye: Peek at the top card of the danger deck. If it is an eagle, ignore it when preparing the next round.
- Mushroom: Place the mushroom token on the harvest table. When the fox next comes into play, it will steal only the mushroom! Your other resources are protected.
- Badger: Take 1 of the ripe berries stored in the burrow and put it in the tunnel bag. That annoying badger is at it again!
- Weasel: Place a weasel token on the tunnel space. If a prairie dog is there, place it on the seasons board, on the hay pile.
- Super Beaver: Play the top card of the beaver deck for free.
Note: When a tunnel token has been played, set it aside – it will no longer be used in the game (unless it is a resource, in which case place it on the harvest table).
