Variants

The expansion contains four variants. You may choose the ones you want to use, or set up the game with all of them at once. We recommend adding the variants to the base game one at a time, so that you get to know the new mechanics well.

  1. Abundance Variant (page 4)
  2. Mystics Variant (page 5)
  3. Cataclysm Variant (page 6)
  4. Fifth Player (page 7)

Abundance Variant

Additional components provide greater replayability, because they offer more options and introduce new, fun rules.

Law Cards

You may add the Law cards from this expansion to the Law cards of the base game and shuffle them all together. You may also use only the new Law cards.

Cataclysm – if you have not decided to play the Cataclysm variant, return to the box those Law cards that refer to Cataclysms. You may also leave them in the deck and put them into the box only after drawing them. In that case, draw a new card in their place.

Templars – some of the new Law cards refer to Templars and change the rules associated with them. You may also return the Templars Law card from the base game to the box.

When the first Law card related to Templars enters the game, it has an additional effect: you must exchange 2 of your Prophets for Templars.

Each subsequent Templar Law card replaces the previous one. This means that Templars will always have only one special ability.

Maya Gods

You may use the new gods together with those from the base game.

Mystics Variant

Mystics introduce new rules. Thanks to them the game becomes more interesting, but also harder. You must now also pay attention to the special rules of the Mystics belonging to other players.

Send your Mystics to the islands of the Archipelago of the Navel of the World to grow your power and outwit the other gods!

The Mystics Variant introduces the following changes.

Setup

Set up the game as usual, and then:

  1. Shuffle all the Mystic cards and deal one to each player. Return the remaining cards to the box. Each player places their Mystic card face up next to their God card.

  2. Give each player 2 Mystic discs in their color.

Optional: each player returns 2 Prophet discs to the box.

Mystic Discs

Mystics are treated as Prophets.

In addition, Mystics have their own special abilities, described on the Mystic cards.

Cataclysm Variant

Cataclysms can be an effective weapon, but even the most powerful gods must be wary of them. They can completely change the course of the game.

The Cataclysm Variant introduces the following changes.

Setup

Set up the game as usual, and then:

  1. Shuffle the Cataclysm cards and place them face down in a stack. This is the Cataclysm deck. Place it next to the Map.

  2. Draw 3 Cataclysm cards and place them face up next to the Cataclysm deck. All players should familiarize themselves with the text of these cards.

Play

After the Mission Phase, add the Cataclysm Phase. The game now consists of 4 phases:

  1. Council Phase
  2. Mission Phase
  3. Cataclysm Phase
  4. Worship Phase

Cataclysm Phase

  1. The player whose Prophet is closest to the Navel of the World becomes the Arbiter. It does not matter whether this Prophet is on an island or at sea. In case of a tie, the Arbiter is the player who took their turn earlier.

If there are no Prophets on the Map, the first player becomes the Arbiter.

  1. The Arbiter chooses one of the face-up Cataclysm cards and resolves its effect.

  2. Then return that card to the box and reveal a new card from the Cataclysm deck.

Fifth Player

Not four but five players can now fight for followers on the islands of the Archipelago of the Navel of the World. The game will be about 15 minutes longer, and the Map will become considerably more crowded!

Choose the first player. This player also becomes the Wandering God.

At the beginning of each Generation (round), before the Council Phase, this player chooses any Player's Corner. For the whole Generation they must flick their Prophets from that corner. After all phases of the given Generation are finished, they may change their corner.

Note: the player controlling the Wandering God is the first player in every Generation.

Tournament Rules

These rules were designed specifically for official and unofficial tournaments of Palec Boży. Thanks to them the game becomes less random and fairer, provided that the players taking part have similar experience and skill.

Organizer – the person or shop responsible for organizing the tournament. This may sound very official, but there is nothing to stop you from organizing a tournament even at home!

Player – a participant in the tournament.

Note: these are only rules for a single game. The Organizer is responsible for preparing the tournament system and its regulations. The Organizer may also decide whether the tournament will be played with promo cards and the Cataclysm expansion.

Tournament Setup

To prepare a tournament game:

  1. Lay out the Map on a flat surface.

  2. Place the Reserve Pool token and the Victory Point tokens next to the Map.

  3. Shuffle the Law card deck and place it face down next to the Map.

  4. Place all God cards in a visible spot next to the Map. If the God cards are double-sided, the Organizer decides which side is face up (or may choose the side at random).

  5. Give each player 2 Prophets and a Temple in the chosen color (so that it is clear to whom each Prophet belongs). The players simultaneously flick one of their Prophets from their chosen corners. This establishes the bidding order for God cards: from the player whose Prophet was closest to the Navel, to the player whose Prophet landed furthest away.

  6. For bidding purposes, the players have an unlimited number of Victory Point tokens. In the order determined by the flicks, they bid for the chosen cards. The bidding player places any number of Victory Point tokens on one of the available God cards and adds a Prophet of their color to it. The next players do the same. If a player wants to bid on a God card that has a Prophet disc of another player on it, they must bid more and return that Prophet to its owner (the Victory Point tokens on the card go back to the supply). A player whose Prophet has been removed must, on their turn, bid on a different God card (they may not bid on the same card from which their Prophet was just removed).

  7. Continue until all players have placed their Prophet on a God card. The rules do not set a maximum bid or a limit on outbidding, but the Organizer may set one at their discretion.

  8. The player who bid the most Victory Points becomes the first player. In case of a tie, the first player is the one who made that bid earlier.

  9. Players choose their corners in order from the highest bid to the lowest. If several players made the same bid, the one who made it earlier goes first.

Worship Phase Change

In the base game the text read:

e) The first player passes their First Player Token to the person on their left.

Tournament rules change this text to:

e) The first player passes their First Player Token to the person on their right.

The remaining rules do not change.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Dagda not too strong?

Yes and no. In your first games you may introduce an additional rule: his ability may be used only once per Generation (round).

How is the Avalanche marker used?

The direction in which the marker is moved must be parallel to one of the edges of the Map. While moving it, hold the marker by its straight side.

Is the Volcano marker removed at the end of the Generation?

The Volcano stays on the Map until the players push it off the island.

Does Supernova kill the Prophets of the player who chose this Cataclysm?

Yes, Supernova kills all Prophets.

How long do the Hail and Plague markers stay on the Map?

Until they are pushed off the Map.

How high should the edge be lifted during the Blizzard Cataclysm?

About 10 cm.

Who gains Victory Points in case of a tie in the Worship Phase?

In case of a tie, nobody receives Victory Points.

How is Domination resolved and how are points scored while the Tower of Babel Law card is active?

When Domination is resolved, all Temples are taken into account, regardless of whether they are on the bottom or on the top of a stack. Moreover, as the Law card says, the player who builds Temples on their turn gains 1 VP for each Temple under a disc of their color.

Is flicking a Temple an additional move while the Do It Yourself Law card is active?

Yes, flicking a Temple counts as an additional move.

Reminder: a flicked Temple keeps all the properties of a Temple (it disappears when it lands in the Sea, it counts when determining Domination, etc.).

  • Sit around the Map in such a way that each player has free access to their corner.

  • Each player takes a number of Victory Point tokens equal to the difference between the highest bid and the bid they made. For example, player A bid 5 VP, player B bid 7 VP, and player C bid 1 VP. In this case player A takes 2 VP (7–5=2), player B takes 0 VP (7–7=0), and player C takes 6 VP (7–1=6).

  • Return the Victory Point tokens that are on the God cards to the supply.

  • Take the God cards with your Prophet discs and place them in front of you.

  • Return all Prophets and Temples to the supply.

  • Give each player 5 Prophets (6 Prophets in a 3-player game) and 4 Temples in the correct color. Also take all additional components listed on the God cards.

  • Put the remaining components (God cards, Prophets, Templars and special tokens) back in the box.
