The Firefly
Written rules text (BGG item description, verbatim):
The Firefly moves two spaces up on top of the Hive from the ground level. When on the Hive it moves one space until it drops down. It cannot move around the Hive at ground level.
Firefly Rules Diagram
Rules diagram titled "Firefly" (verbatim text of the diagram):
- Firefly moves by 1 space around the hive
- OR
- Attracts a piece on top of the hive by 1 space towards itself
- Target piece must be within 2 spaces away
- Cannot attract a piece that moved last turn
- Attracted piece cannot move on the next turn
Diagram illustrations:
- Green: two green arrows lead from the Firefly to the two empty hexes below it, marked as movement by 1 space around the hive.
- Orange: three orange arrows, each running from an orange-outlined hex to a neighbouring hex, marked as an attraction by 1 space towards the Firefly. The attracted piece is shown on top of the hive, with the target within 2 spaces.
- The "cannot attract a piece that moved last turn" line is printed in red in the diagram.
Firefly Alternative Rules Diagram
Rules diagram titled "Firefly (alternative)" (verbatim text of the diagram):
- Firefly moves by 2 spaces around the hive
- OR
- Can share movement with another friendly Firefly
- Firefly instead moves just by 1 space AND
- Another friendly Firefly also moves by 1 space at the same time
- When Mosquito copies the Firefly, it can only share its movement. It cannot receive movement
Diagram illustrations:
- Left-hand example (green): a Firefly moving 2 spaces around the hive. Two alternative 2-space paths are shown from the same Firefly, one going up and one going down, each marked as a 1-space step followed by a second 1-space step.
- Right-hand example (orange): two Fireflies, one on each side of a gap. Each is shown with a 1-space move to a hex above it and a 1-space move to a hex below it, marked as shared movement with the other Firefly (each moves 1 space at the same time).
Note on the Discrepancy
Added by the transcriber. Not part of the printed rules.
The written BGG item description and the two rules diagrams describe different movement for the Firefly:
- The written description says the Firefly moves two spaces on top of the Hive from ground level, moves one space while on the Hive until it drops down, and cannot move around the Hive at ground level.
- The "Firefly" rules diagram says the Firefly either moves 1 space around the hive, or attracts a piece on top of the hive 1 space towards itself (target within 2 spaces, not a piece that moved last turn, and the attracted piece cannot move on the next turn).
- The "Firefly (alternative)" rules diagram says the Firefly either moves 2 spaces around the hive, or shares its movement with another friendly Firefly (the Firefly moves 1 space and the other friendly Firefly also moves 1 space at the same time). It also says that when a Mosquito copies the Firefly, it can only share movement and cannot receive movement.
No single version is confirmed as the designer's final intent. The "Firefly" diagram is transcribed here as the primary rule set, because it is the rules diagram titled as the Firefly's own rule. The written description and the alternative diagram are transcribed above under their own headings so that a player can choose which version to use. The Rules forum thread for this item could not be reached when this rulebook was written, so the designer's clarification of the discrepancy is not included.
