Must I cover the bottom bonus with my diver on the first dive there?

Yes — the diver must go into the "3" slot the first time a diver reaches the bottom of that column this week, but gaining the bonus itself is optional like other benefits. After the first time, divers go in the gray box and no bonus is available.
