Objective
La Catrina is an expansion played over several rounds. During those rounds, the players must win as many Flowers as possible in order to decorate La Catrina's hat!
Setup
Set up Fiesta de los Muertos as usual, and don't forget to take the number of yellow Memory Bones matching the number of players.
Place the La Catrina tile in plain view on the table, and take the number of red Limbo Bones indicated below:
- 4 players: no bones
- 5 players: 1 bone
- 6 players: 2 bones
- 7 players: 3 bones
- 8 players: 4 bones
Remark: It is possible to combine the La Catrina expansion with the Les cortèges expansion. But be careful: in that case, it becomes very difficult!
Gameplay
Each round plays like a usual game of Fiesta de los Muertos, except for Phase 4, "Appease the Dead."
This time, in a Skull, when you succeed in checking the extra yellow box, you have the choice between:
- Winning a Memory Bone (yellow).
- Winning a Flower (in that case, color in a flower on the hat of the La Catrina tile).
Your choice!
Using Limbo Bones
In addition to the Memory Bones (yellow), you may also use Limbo Bones (red) to help appease the dead.
You may discard a Limbo Bone (red) to close a Skull that has not been appeased, regardless of how many white boxes are still missing to be checked in that Skull.
Example: You are 6 players. For Skull number 1, three boxes are still missing to be checked. You may use one Limbo Bone to close the Skull and appease it.
Remark: Using a Limbo Bone (red) does not allow you to check the extra yellow box of a Skull.
Moving to the Next Round
If you succeed in closing all the Skulls, the round is a success, and you may move on to the next round. And it gets harder...
Good news! At the end of a round, you keep the Memory Bones and the Limbo Bones that you did not discard, and you may use them in the following rounds.
Attention: unlike Memory Bones, you can never win new Limbo Bones, so make good use of them...
During the second round: play with one Constraint card (see the rules of Fiesta de los Muertos). If you succeed in closing all the Skulls, move on to the next round and, as a bonus, color in one Flower on the hat.
During the third round: play with two Constraint cards (see the rules of Fiesta de los Muertos). If you succeed in closing all the Skulls, move on to the next round and, as a bonus, color in two Flowers on the hat.
During the fourth round: play with three Constraint cards (see the rules of Fiesta de los Muertos). If you succeed in closing all the Skulls, color in three Flowers on the hat.
End of the Game
The game stops in two cases:
- If, at the end of a round, you do not succeed in closing all the Skulls.
- At the end of the fourth round.
In both cases, count the number of colored Flowers: you will then know La Catrina's mood by looking at her hat!
Remark: If you ever manage to color in all 13 Flowers during the game, the game also stops. Congratulations!
- 0 to 3 Flowers: La Catrina is somewhat put out. Ouch! You will have to do better next time.
- 4 to 6 Flowers: A slight smile appears on La Catrina's face. That is encouraging.
- 7 to 9 Flowers: La Catrina looks at her hat with a certain pride. Well played!
- 10 to 12 Flowers: La Catrina has rarely looked so radiant. Tonight she is the most elegant of all! Bravo!
- 13 Flowers: La Catrina is won over, and she promises you a sumptuous welcome when you arrive in the kingdom of the dead. Hats off!
Remark: Feel free to color in the flowers on this page to keep your best score!
