Can I pay Timber instead of Wood, or Brick instead of Clay?

Yes. Whatever the action, a cost in Wood may be paid with Timber and a cost in Clay with Brick (it is usually wasteful, since Timber and Brick score). The substitution works only in that direction and only for those two pairs: upgraded clothing such as Leather Wear cannot stand in for Leather.
