Components

  • 9 Cards
    • 4x Wheat/Bread
    • 2x Animals
    • 2x Moneycard
    • 1x Market
  • 1 Rules sheet

You need also:

  • 1 six-sided die (dice)
  • Markers (cubes) to determine the money

You can use 2 copies of Farmers Finances to play with up to 4 players.

The Cards

Wheat / Animals

Each good card has these elements:

  1. Name
  2. Illustration
  3. Basic cost when buying (BUY)
  4. Basic profit when selling (SELL)
  5. Profit for the bread (shown on the wheat card only, a small coin value next to the bread symbol)

The back of a wheat card shows bread (see "Use Wheat (Make Bread)" below).

Market

Each market card has these elements:

  1. Buying modifier (BUY column)
  2. Selling modifier (SELL column)
  3. Area to place the dice to mark the current supply and demand

The Market card lists five rows. The left column is the BUY modifier and the right column is the SELL modifier. From top to bottom the rows read:

Row (dice value)BUY modifierSELL modifier
1+2-2
2+1-1
300
4-1+1
5-2+2

The dice faces printed beside the rows show the value for each row (1 to 5).

Game Setup

Place the Wheat cards (Wheat face up) and the Animals cards as two separate stacks in the middle of the table (the marketplace).

Each player gets one money card and one marker, which is placed on the 10. This is the start fee.

Place the Market card near the marketplace so everyone can reach the card. Roll the dice and determine the market value. Place the dice on the spot with the same number (dice value).

Setup diagram (as printed): the player area (farm) for player 1 holds the money card with its marker on the 10; the marketplace holds the Wheat and Animals stacks and the Market card; the player area (farm) for player 2 holds its own money card and marker.

Game Play

The player must take one of the following actions on his turn:

Buy

Buy one card from the marketplace. Pay the cost depends on the market-value (at least 1 coin). Move the moneymarker to your new credit. Take the card and place it in front of you (your farm). If you don't have enough money, you can't buy the card.

Example: You want to buy wheat (BUY -2 = you lose two coins). The market is (BUY +1 = you get one coin back / pay one coin less). The wheat costs 1 coin. / You have to reduce your money by one coin. (-2)+(+1) = -1. Wheat at market (-2) costs 4 coins. (-2)+(-2) = -4.

Empty-market rule: If a player buys the last card, immediately there is a selling-phase. Everyone must sell all of his cards for the current selling modifier. After this, reroll the market.

Sell

Sell one or more from one sort of cards. (Only wheat, only bread or only animals). Put the card(s) back to the marketplace (wheat face up) and get the profit depends on the market-value. (If you sell bread you always get 7 money per card.) Move the moneymarker to your new credit.

Use Wheat (Make Bread)

You can flip one or more wheat cards to the back to make bread.

At the end of his turn a player must change the market value.

Change Market

Move the dice one space or reroll. If you roll a 1-5 place the dice on the row with the same value. This is the new supply and demand. If you roll a 6 you can choose the new market-value freely.

Game End

If player 2 reaches 70 money or more after his turn, he wins the game immediately. If player 1 (startplayer) reaches 70 money or more after his turn, player 2 has one more turn to earn more money. After this turn, the player with the most money wins.

If there is a tie, both player sell all of their remaining cards (without the market-modification). Is this a tie too, both player win the game. Time for a rematch.

Notes on the Printed Sheet

  • The printed sheet gives the bread profit for a wheat card as 7 (the coin on the wheat card and the sell rule "If you sell bread you always get 7 money per card"). The components illustration of the bread back shows "IGNORE MARKET" and a sell value of 5. The sheet does not reconcile these two figures; the rules text above is transcribed as printed and the 7 is the value stated in the rules text.
  • The sheet's game-end and tie text is transcribed as printed, including its wording "both player".

Solo Play

From the designer's separate solo sheet (version 1.1), transcribed as printed. The solo sheet also carries a results column for recording turn counts, which is omitted here.

With some changes in the main rules, you can play Farmers Finances as a sologame. Try to earn 70 coins in as less as possible turns.

Solo Game Setup

Use the second moneycard as a turn-tracker and place the marker on the first coin.

Shuffle the wheat and the animals into one stack. Split this into two piles and place it in the market.

Roll for the market.

Setup diagram (as printed): turn-tracker (money card); marketplace (Wheat and Animals piles and the Market card); playarea (farm) (money card).

Solo Turnorder

  1. Move your turnmarker. Move your marker to the next coin.
  2. Roll for the market. If you roll a 6, sell all of your cards in your farm. When you have no cards, nothing happens.
  3. Make an action. You can buy, sell or make bread like in the main rule with some minor changes:

Buy:

  1. You can only buy one of the 2 top cards.
  2. You can only buy from the left pile when their is not the same card on top of the right pile. Otherwise you must buy from the right pile.

Sell:

  1. When cards came back to the market, shuffle and lay them under the left pile.

Empty market:

  1. When you buy the last card from a pile, immediately there is a selling-phase. You must sell all of your cards for the current selling modifier. After this, shuffle all cards into one stack. Split this into two piles and place it in the market.

Solo Game End

Repeat the turnorder until you have 70 coins or more. Write down your current turnnummer from the turn-tracker and try to beat this number next time.
