Goal of the Game

This is a strategic game about conquering states. The winner is the player who, at the end of the game, has more states.

Setup

1) Forming the Playing Area

Mix the elements of the playing area and assemble from them the playing field (see the back of the box).

2) Distributing Pieces Among the Players

  • If two play, each player receives 36 knights.
  • If three play, each player receives 24 knights.
  • If four play, each player receives 18 knights.

Play

The game has two phases: inhabiting and conquering.

1) Inhabiting

  • The right of first inhabiting is decided.
  • On a turn, a player may place one knight (piece) into one state.
  • Knights may be placed only (diagram 1):
    • a. into an uninhabited state;
    • b. into a state that already contains your own knights.
  • No more than 5 knights may be placed in one state.
  • Inhabiting continues clockwise until all knights have been placed.

2) Conquering

  • The right to begin conquering is decided.
  • Conquering:
    • a. A player may conquer a state belonging to another player if that state has fewer knights than your state which borders it (diagram 2).
    • b. The stronger conqueror removes all of the other player's knights from the conquered state and moves there from 1 to 5 of their own knights, of their choice (diagram 3).
    • c. No state may be left empty, and no state may have more than five knights.
    • d. If a player cannot conquer on their turn, they skip the turn.
  • Only one state may be attacked in one turn.
  • If there is a possibility to attack, it must be used.

End of the Game

The game continues until no player has any possibility to conquer. Each player counts their states. The player with more states wins the game.

Extra Fortress Rule

Only in a game with three or four players.

  • A state with a fortress receives the additional strength of one knight when defending.
  • When attacking, the strength of a fortress is not counted.
  • At the end of the game, an ordinary state gives one point, and a state with a fortress gives two points.

Tips

  • During inhabiting, strengthen your rear and keep an eye on the neighbouring states.
  • Make sure your knights are not driven into a corner.
  • Do not be greedy: the more states you hold, the weaker each of them is.
