Set the Stage
A. Category Is...
- Place the game board in the center of the table.
- Using one color of category tokens, randomly determine a dance move category for each judge. You may optionally choose the categories you'd prefer to play with.
- For each chosen category, find the corresponding 15-card deck of dance moves, shuffle it, and place it facedown in the respective space above each judge. Flip the top card of each deck face-up.
B. Write the Song
- Shuffle the lyric tokens and deal them face-up to the board depending on the quantity of players.
- 2 players: 12 tokens
- 3 players: 18 tokens
- 4 players: 24 tokens
C. Bedazzle the Stage
- Shuffle the bag of rhinestones and deal one rhinestone randomly to each space on the stage.
- Keep the rhinestone bag nearby the board.
- Keep the lip tokens in a supply near the board.
D. Player Setup
- Each player chooses a color and takes the corresponding player board and category tokens. Only the 5 category tokens that correspond to the chosen dance move categories will be needed. The rest can be placed back into the box.
- Each player chooses a drag queen to play and takes the player card and figure of their chosen queen. In the basic game, the side of the player card without the queen power should be face-up.
E. Optional Setup
- 10s & Reveals: See "10s & Reveals" below for setup instructions.
- Judge Desires: See "Judge Desires" below for setup instructions.
F. Final Preparations
- Randomly determine the purse first player and give that player the purse first player token.
- Starting resources: in clockwise player order, give the 2nd player a random rhinestone, the 3rd player a random rhinestone and a lip, and the 4th player a random rhinestone, a lip, and a card of their choice from the current card display.
- Beginning with the purse first player, each player places their queen figure in an unoccupied space on the stage, taking the rhinestone from that space into their supply.
When all queens have taken their starting positions, let the music play! The starting player may take their first turn.
How to Slay
The winner will be the queen with the most star quality (points) at the end of the game.
Beginning with the purse first player, players take turns in clockwise order until the end of the game. After a player claims the lyric that reveals the checkered flag matching your player count, continue play until all players have had an equal number of turns. Then proceed to judges deliberation.
Taking your turn
Each turn perform the following steps, in order:
- Bedazzle (required)
- Move (optional)
- Draw (optional)
- Dance (optional)
- Lip Sync (optional)
1. Bedazzle
Fill each empty, unoccupied space in your current stage area with a random rhinestone from the bag.
There are 5 areas of the stage, each indicated by a color.
If there are no more rhinestones in the bag, place all spent rhinestones back into the bag and shuffle.
Example A: Victoria starts her turn in the purple area of the stage. She must bedazzle each empty purple space with a random rhinestone from the bag.
2. Move
Move like a queen in chess. That is, as far as you want in a single direction. But please stay on the stage...
You may not land on other queens. Drag is NOT a contact sport. You may move through other queens, but you have to pay them a rhinestone of your choice to do so.
When you arrive at your destination, if it has a rhinestone, take that rhinestone into your supply, and all rhinestones of the same color that you moved past on your way.
Example B: Savannah lands on an orange rhinestone, after moving past two other orange rhinestones. She takes all three into her supply.
3. Draw a Card
Choose 1 face-up card from the card display to add to your hand.
Then take 1 lip token for every card in the card display and every played card in your supply that has a matching rhinestone color as the card you drew. This includes the card you drew, so you always get at least 1 lip token.
After taking lips, flip the top card of the respective category deck face-up.
Example C: Jen takes a card with the blue rhinestone, earning her 3 lips. 2 for the pair of blue cards in the display, and 1 for the blue card in her supply of played cards.
4. Play a dance move card
Spending Rhinestones
To play a dance move card from your hand, you must spend a pair of same-color rhinestones.
Some cards let you spend additional pairs of rhinestones to increase the star quality (points) of that move. The additional pairs do not need to be the same color.
Spent rhinestones should be placed to the side, not back in the bag.
Cards in your hand and in your supply of played cards may be discarded to be spent as the rhinestone printed on the discarded card. Discarded cards may be placed back in the box; they won't be needed again during the game.
Example D: In the booty category, Dump It may only be played for a single star quality, costing 1 pair of rhinestones. Twerk may be played as 1 or 2 star quality, costing 1 or 2 pairs of rhinestones, respectively. Eternity Jiggle may be played as 1, 2 or 3 star quality, costing 1, 2 or 3 pairs of rhinestones.
Stack
Place the played dance move on the top of your stack of played dance move cards, such that the rhinestones of the cards below remain visible.
Determine Your Score
You will receive a score for your dance move based on the card text and the star quality you invested in the card.
To keep track of this score, reference the category of the played dance move, then take your corresponding category token and move it along the score track on your player board. If you already have points in this category, add your new score to your previous total.
If you would go above 20 points, flip the category token to the '+20' side and start again from the beginning of the score track. The maximum score in a single category is 40. If you would go above 40 points, leave your category token on 40.
Example E: Kiki wants to play a 2-star quality Sissy that Walk. For the first pair, she spends a pair of blue rhinestones. For the second pair of rhinestones she spends a green rhinestone and discards a card with a green rhinestone on it. By spending 2 pairs of rhinestones, her 2-star runway move is worth 2 points per space moved this turn. She moved 4 spaces, earning 8 points for her dance move.
5. Lip Sync
You may spend lip tokens to claim lyric tokens. You may claim as many lyric tokens as you wish, but they must always be in order of the song. The song begins from the top left of the first row, and continues to the bottom right of the second row.
The lip cost is displayed on the lyric token, and corresponds to the quantity of words in the lyric.
You'll receive a score for your claimed lyric tokens, which is the sum of all star quality points displayed on the claimed lyric tokens. Also include the points of all lyric tokens you've previously claimed that have a matching color with any lyric tokens you are claiming this turn.
These points get added to the category displayed on the top card of your stack of played cards. If you do not have any played cards, you may not lip sync.
Example F: Kiki claims the next 2 lyric tokens, the blue 3-word lyric and the yellow 2-word lyric, using 5 lips. Since she previously claimed the yellow 5-word lyric, her lyric score becomes 3 + 2 + 5 = 10. She adds these points to the category currently displayed on the top of her played cards supply.
Modules
You may optionally choose to enhance your game with modules that add complexity to Extravaganza. New players are encouraged to start with the basic game and add enhancements over time.
The game can be played at four levels: Basic, Fierce, Sickening and Legendary. The modules are Queen Powers, Judge Desires, and 10s + Reveals.
Judge Desires
Setup: Shuffle the desire tokens and deal one face-up to each judge. Put the remaining desire tokens in a facedown stack near the board.
Each judge has specific desires that players may fulfill throughout the game. Fulfill a desire by doing exactly what it says (see below), thereby claiming the token.
When claiming a desire token, take it from the game board and stack it on your player board in the space that corresponds to the judge that had the desire. There is no limit to how many desire tokens you may claim for a judge. You may claim desire tokens from multiple judges in a single turn.
At the end of your turn draw a new random desire token for any judge on the game board that currently does not have a desire token.
Example G: Modern Tart played a blue-rhinestone dance move in the blue stage area, earning two desire tokens.
Desire token types:
- Spend an actual rhinestone of the given color on a dance move.
- Play a dance move card of the given color.
- Play any dance move in the stage area of the given color.
- As part of paying for a dance move, spend a discarded card of the given color (from your hand or player board).
- Spend an actual rhinestone of a given color AND dance in the matching stage area.
- Spend a discarded card of a given color AND play a dance move of the matching color.
10s & Reveals
Setup: Place 10-tokens, equal to the quantity of players, in the respective space next to each judge. Shuffle the Reveal Cards and deal 3 to each player. The remaining 10-tokens and reveal cards may be returned to the box.
Earning a 10-Token
If on your entire turn you score 10 or more points in a single category where you don't yet have a 10-token, then you earn a 10-token for that category. Take a 10-Token from the judge underneath the respective deck of dance moves on the game board and place it on your player board next to the respective judge.
Reveal Cards
You may play one reveal card per turn, at any point during your turn. Reveal cards have no cost. The symbol in the card text is equal to how many categories you've 10'd so far.
Example H: Candy has already 10'd three categories. When she plays Beat Your Face, she immediately takes 3 lip tokens.
Reveal card types:
- Play a dance move of the given color within the matching stage area.
- Spend a discarded card of the given color AND dance in the matching stage area.
- Move 3+ spaces and land on a stage space of the given color.
- Spend an actual rhinestone AND play a dance move, both of the given color.
- Spend an actual rhinestone AND a discarded card, both of the given color.
- Move 3+ spaces and land on a rhinestone of the given color.
Category Is...
The judges pick 5 categories of dance moves that will be judged during the song. Within a category all the cards score in the same way. For example, all the RUNWAY cards give you points based on how many spaces you moved this turn. However! Not every dance move is created equal, and some dance moves may have a higher potential for star quality. Each dance move has 5 copies in the deck, one for each rhinestone color.
Reminder, NEARBY: Nearby refers to each space directly adjacent in all directions.
Booty
Score 1 / 2 / 3 per rhinestone in your supply. Include the rhinestones of nearby queens if they have fewer. Spent rhinestones do not count.
Runway
Score 1 / 2 / 3 per space moved this turn. Each queen moved through counts as 2 additional spaces. Extra movement from reveal cards also counts.
Eleganza
Score 1 / 2 / 3 per rhinestone of a single color in the supply of spent rhinestones. Then put them back in the bag. Spent rhinestones do count! Only put the scored rhinestones back in the bag.
Floorwerk
Bedazzle nearby. Then score 1 / 2 / 3 per rhinestone of a single color on the stage. Only bedazzle nearby empty spaces.
Handwerk
Reveal up to 3 cards from your hand. Nearby queens reveal 1 card. Score 1 / 2 / 3 per star on those cards. Only dance move cards may be revealed.
Lyricism
Score 1 / 2 / 3 per word in the current lyric and per color among your claimed lyric tokens. The current lyric refers to the left-top-most lyric token.
Shawam
Score 1 / 2 / 3 per empty space on the stage. Then bedazzle the entire stage. Empty means no queen or rhinestone.
Shade
Discard the top card from 3 category decks. Score 1 / 2 / 3 per star on the discarded cards. Discarded cards are removed from the game.
Tuck
Score 1 / 2 / 3 per played card in your supply. Include the played cards of nearby queens if they have fewer. This card counts itself as a played card.
Twirls
Score 1 / 2 / 3 per rhinestone color nearby and per rhinestone color in your supply. Spent rhinestones do not count.
Meet the Queens
Queen powers are used on the reverse side of the player card (see Player Setup).
Jen Ga (Hometown: Bangkok, Thailand)
TUCKINGHAM PALACE: After performing a dance move, add +1 to it for every rhinestone color remaining in your supply and played cards. The card you play also counts.
Savannah Wonders (Hometown: Atlanta, GA)
CUNNING LINGUIST: When drawing a card, if you would take 1 or 2 lip tokens, take +1 lip token. If you would take 1 lip, instead take 2. If you would take 2 lips, instead take 3.
Lana Candy (Hometown: New York City, NY)
CHERRY ON TOP: When you play a dance move draw a random rhinestone. The rhinestone is drawn after paying for the dance move, but before scoring.
Ella Grande (Hometown: San Antonio, TX)
BODY ODDY: Anytime you land nearby another queen, you may take a rhinestone from their supply if you do not have a rhinestone of that color. If you land on a rhinestone you must take that into your supply before checking your ability.
Modern Tart (Hometown: Paris, France)
GREEN SCREEN QUEEN: You may consider green rhinestones on the stage and in your supply as any color. When a green rhinestone is used as though it were another color, it is no longer green.
Victoria Pointe (Hometown: London, England)
PIROUETTE: Each time you bedazzle: take 1 bedazzled rhinestone if you don't currently have that color in your supply. Some dance moves and reveals also bedazzle the stage.
Kiki Flowers (Hometown: Chicago, IL)
STAGE PRESENCE: You may treat your current stage area as a rhinestone of that color when paying for dance moves. This does not count as spending an actual rhinestone.
Anne Demic (Hometown: Detroit, MI)
BLOOD SUCKER: You may choose to score the lyric tokens of a nearby queen rather than your own. This ability does not apply to the game end lyric diversity scoring.
Judge Deliberation
In the basic game, you only need Lyric Diversity and Category Review to calculate your final score. Include Desire Sets and Judge Desires only when you are playing with Judge Desires. Include 10s Across the Board when you are playing with 10-tokens.
Use the accompanying scoresheet to help you add up your final score.
10s Across the Board
If you received a 10-token from each judge then earn points equal to your lowest-scoring category.
Lyric Diversity
Receive points based on how many colors are represented among your lyric tokens.
| Colors | 0 | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Points | 0 | 1 | 3 | 6 | 10 | 15 |
Category Review
Each queen receives their accumulated points for each category.
Then, the queen that earned the highest score in each category earns an additional desire token from the judge underneath that category of dance moves on the game board.
Desire Sets
Each queen receives 10 points for each unique set of desire tokens they have. A set is one desire token for each judge.
Judge Desires
Each claimed desire token is worth points.
- Guest Judges: 3 points per desire token
- Recurring Judges: 4 points per desire token
- Head Judge: 5 points per desire token
The judges, left to right on the board, are: Guest Judge (3), Recurring Judge (4), Head Judge (5), Recurring Judge (4), Guest Judge (3).
Example I: Ella is calculating her final score in a 3-player game. First off, she managed to receive a 10 from every judge, so she scores points equal to her lowest scoring category. Her lowest category score is 11, so she scores 11 points for 10's across the board. She claimed 3 different colors of lyric tokens during the game, which is worth 6 points. She earned 12 points in the Booty category. She earned 21 points in the Twirl category. She earned 11 points in the Shade category. She has the highest score in this category and receives an additional desire token from the judge overseeing this category: head judge Francis Labelle. She earned 14 points in the Floorwerk category. She earned 24 points in the Lyrcism category. She has the highest score in this category and receives an additional desire token from the judge overseeing this category: guest judge Wilmina Grace. She has two unique sets of desire tokens, earning 10 points each for 20 points. She has 5 desire tokens from guest judges (3 points each), 6 desire tokens from recurring judges (4 points each), and 2 desire tokens from the head judge (5 points each), earning 49 points total for her desire tokens. Adding up her score, she ends up with 168 points, proving she has the most star quality and taking the crown.
