Game Idea

Together with Tim you are on expedition in the legendary "Valley of the Dinosaurs". Whoever's turn it is, takes a hammer and chisel and tries to excavate a petrified bone from the rocks. But watch out! If more than one boulder tumbles off, if Tim is hit or if the dinosaur topples over your turn is over. The aim of the game is to use your luck and skill to collect the most boulders.

Preparation of the Game

Before starting to play for the first time, carefully remove the pre-punched rectangle from the center of the game board. During the game it serves as a deposit for boulders.

Place the game board in the center of the table and put the deposit board a short distance away from the game board. Then insert the rock pedestal into the hole left in the middle of the game board. Place Tim on any square of the game board.

Get the hammer, chisel and die ready.

Now assemble the rock

  1. Place any six boulders in two rows of three on the rock pedestal.
  2. Place the dinosaur upright between the first two rows of boulders.
  3. Stack the 18 remaining boulders in three further layers on top of each other. Now the dinosaur is completely embedded inside the rock.

How to Play

Play in a clockwise direction. Whoever can name the most dinosaurs may start. If you cannot agree the youngest player starts and rolls the die.

Move Tim the corresponding number of squares.

What is shown on the square Tim has reached?

  • The hammer: You can excavate (see "Actions") using just the hammer.
  • Hammer and chisel: You can excavate (see "Actions") using the hammer and chisel.
  • The magnifying glass: You explore (see "Actions").

Carry out the corresponding action. Then it's the turn of the next player.

Actions

Excavation

Just like real dinosaur explorers you will need to use all your skills. Try to knock a boulder out of the rock.

Take the tool(s) that you are allowed and carefully hit the rock somewhere suitable so that one boulder can be loosened and fall down. You can have up to three attempts.

The excavation stops as soon as ...

  • ... a boulder has fallen off. Great! The excavation was successful. Now look and see if on the upper side of the block there is a bone. Don't move the boulder.
    • Does the boulder show a bone?
      • Yes? That rocks! Collect the boulder.
      • No? Unfortunately you were unlucky. Place the boulder on the deposit.
  • ... more boulders have fallen off. Watch out! Landslide! Place all the boulders that have fallen off on the rock deposit. (More than one boulder = end of turn, boulders on deposit.)
  • ... you finished your third hit. If still no boulder has fallen off unfortunately you were unlucky.
  • ... a boulder has hit dinosaur explorer Tim. Ouch! Place the boulders that have fallen off on the deposit.
  • ... the dinosaur tumbles over. The game ends immediately. Any boulders that have fallen off are left where they are. They don't belong to any player. (Dinosaur tumbles over = end of game.)

Exploration

This part of the expedition requires some luck. Maybe you will discover a bone. Take a boulder from the deposit and roll it as if it were a die.

Does it show a bone on the upper side?

  • Yes? Explorer's luck! Take the boulder.
  • No? Bad luck! Return the boulder to the deposit.

If no boulder is left on the deposit you can roll the green die and move Tim.

End of the Game

The game ends as soon as the dinosaur falls over. Whoever has the most boulders in front of him is the most successful dinosaur explorer and wins the game.

Hint: Before starting to knock have a good look. Ideally you try to knock out the boulders that show the most bones. As then it is more likely that a bone will appear on the upper side of the boulder when it falls down.

Expedition for Experts

Play according to the rules of the basic game, except for the following changes:

  • You have as many tries at excavating as dots are shown on the green die.
  • The player who made the dinosaur tumble loses the game. So a player may decide not to roll the die and renounce his turn.
  • The game ends as soon as one of the following two cases arise:
    1. All players have renounced their turn. Whoever has the most boulders in front of him, wins the game.
    2. The dinosaur has tumbled over. The player who caused the dinosaur to tumble over loses the game. The other players count their boulders. Whoever has the most boulders wins the game.
