Game Materials

  • 46 cards
    • 11 Riddle Cards
    • 20 Answer Cards
    • 15 Help Cards
  • 3 strange items (red, green, blue)
  • 1 program
  • 1 decoder disk

In addition, you will need something to write with (ideally a pencil and an eraser), one or two extra sheets of paper, and a watch (ideally a stopwatch) to keep track of the time. If you wish, you can use a pair of scissors. Scissors make the game easier, but are absolutely not indispensable.

Game Setup

Place the program and the decoder disk on the table. Leave the strange items nearby for the moment.

Sort the cards into three piles, following what is written on their backs:

  • Riddle Cards
  • Answer Cards
  • Help Cards

Be careful not to look at the fronts of these cards.

Check that the Riddle Cards and the Answer Cards are sorted in ascending order, following the letters and numbers.

Sort the Help Cards according to their symbol. Place the cards with the same symbol one on top of the other, so that the "1st CLUE" card is on top of the "2nd CLUE" card, and the latter is on top of the "SOLUTION" card. Then place them in several piles at the edge of the table.

Where Is the Game Board?

This game has no board! You will have to find out for yourselves what you must do and what the rooms look like. At the start of the game, you have only the program and the decoder disk at your disposal.

During the game, you will add the Riddle Cards when you spot them among the illustrations or when the text mentions them. Each time this happens, you may take the corresponding cards from the Riddle Card pile and look at them.

Likewise, you may use the strange items only when it is explicitly said that you have found them. Before that, leave them aside!

Example: If you find an illustration like this one, you may immediately take the corresponding Riddle Card from the pile and look at it.

Course of Play

Your goal is to escape from the theater together as quickly as possible.

This would be much simpler if every lock in the room were not protected by a riddle. During the game, you will find objects locked by a code made of three digits. To access them, you must find the corresponding code and enter it in the decoder disk. On the edge of the disk are five different symbols. Each symbol represents a code to be identified. But you must find out for yourselves which symbol belongs to which code. Be sure to pay attention to the smallest details. If you think you have identified a code, enter it under the corresponding symbol of the disk (from the outside toward the inside). Then look through the observation window on the small wheel to see a number appear.

This number indicates the number of the Answer Card that you are now allowed to look at. If the code is incorrect, you will have to continue your search to discover the solution, or move on to another riddle for the time being. If the code is correct, the Answer Card will tell you how to continue.

Example: You have identified the solution of the riddle with a given symbol as 8-7-3. You enter the combination under the symbol on the decoder disk. In the small window, you will see the number of the Answer Card that you are now allowed to take from the pile and look at.

Is the Code Incorrect?

If so, the Answer Card will tell you. In that case, simply put the card back into the pile and take another look at the riddle you failed. Perhaps there is something you overlooked. Or it is possible that you do not yet have all the clues you need to solve it. You will just have to continue elsewhere for now.

Is the Code Probably Correct?

If so, the Answer Card will look like this: (a card asking where you see the code symbol, showing a grid of pictured objects, each paired with a different Answer Card number).

Where Can the Code Symbols Be Seen?

Good question! To answer it, you must look closely at the pictures in the program or on the Riddle Cards. All the possible locked objects can be found there. All of these objects are marked with a symbol. Our example uses the cabinet with the symbol on it.

To continue with this example: next, you look at the Answer Card shown next to the cabinet on the card. You will see that you must now take Answer Card 17 from the pile.

Is the Code Really Correct?

If so, the Answer Card will tell you how to continue. You will find one or more new Riddle Cards that you are allowed to take from the pile and look at immediately.

Is the Code Really Incorrect?

Well, in that case you have probably made a mistake. You will have to think about it a little more and come back with a different answer.

IMPORTANT: Whether the answer is right or wrong, put all Answer Cards back into the Answer Card pile. All codes can be solved logically. It would not be wise to try all possible combinations on the disk.

A Last Tip

Every game element that you have used successfully to solve a riddle should be set aside. You might need these elements again. This way, you can follow your progress more easily and will not get muddled. For some riddles, the only things you will need are the illustrations of the rooms.

The Game Begins

What are you waiting for? Start the stopwatch and get out of the theater before it is too late!

Now you are allowed to browse the entire program and start solving riddles. If anything is unclear, do not be afraid to check the rulebook during the game.

Have a little patience; some riddles can only be solved with the help of several Riddle Cards. You will not have them all at your disposal from the start. Sometimes you will first have to tackle other riddles to obtain more cards.

Do not be afraid to use the Help Cards if you get stuck. As soon as a Help Card is used, form a discard pile.

Need Help?

Of course, the game can come to your aid if you get stuck. For each code, there are three Help Cards, which can be recognized by the symbol shown on their back. In addition to giving you a useful first clue, each "1st CLUE" Help Card also tells you which Riddle Cards you must have found, in order, to be able to solve the corresponding riddle. The "2nd CLUE" Help Cards give you somewhat more concrete help in finding the solution to the corresponding riddle. The "SOLUTION" Help Cards provide the solution to the riddle.

IMPORTANT: Always use the Help Cards whose symbol corresponds to a specific Riddle Card or to a riddle in the program. These riddles are singularly identified by a symbol (corresponding to a symbol on the decoder disk). It will not help you to use Help Cards if you have not found a riddle with the corresponding symbol.

Additional Game Materials

In addition to the materials described above, you will need a pencil and paper to take notes. You will also need a watch or a stopwatch.

IMPORTANT: You may write on the materials, fold them or tear them... All of this is allowed and sometimes even necessary. You can play the game only once; after that, you will know all the riddles and will no longer be able to use the materials! If you wish, you can also use scissors to cut out the materials rather than tearing them.

When Does the Game End?

The game ends when you have solved the last riddle and escaped from the theater. A card will tell you so. Start the stopwatch (or check the time) at the beginning of the game to know how long you needed. You can look at the table on the next page to evaluate your level of success. When you calculate the number of Help Cards used, only the cards that gave you new leads or solutions should be counted. If a Help Card told you something you already knew, do not include it in the calculation.
